Recap Year End

The weather man came through, although the wind was a factor, but for the middle of October it could have been a lot worse. The Year End tournament is not one you want to miss as there is lots of money to be had. TJ, John MacNeil, and Jim Lyons all came away with over $200 in winnings. TJ doesn't want the year to end, he thinks he can make a living off of the league. I do believe he set an SIGL record with winning $471 for the year. It sometimes pays to be lucky as Mike Bradley, with Vicadin in hand for his ailing back, found out by landing on the 2nd place team and winning the C high net with a -7, and also mustered up enough strength to win the long drive. Scoring was tough with only 5 members making their quotas or better. Jim Lyons had the round of the day with a +4 and with no help from his team members managed to win $215 by collecting $190 on birdies and top high gross in his division.
McNeice is still trying to find the web site on his blackberry. Lyons never got the memo we were starting earlier, but thanks to the frost delay we started a half hour later.
I had a lot of fun with the blog this year and hope nobody took offense, I give praise when you play good and I let you know when you stink it up.
LB and I would like to thank all of you who donated for the year end gift and we look forward to doing it all over again in April of 2010. The letter will be in the mail in February or March to let you know.......or not!!!
OBO thanks for keeping the bar open.
Have a great winter.........Yuk.........See ya next year

Recap Week 20

20 weeks are now in the books and with the rain-outs the layoff until the year end is only a week and a half, so we should all still be in some sort of groove. I am praying to Claude, which is a rubber chicken hanging in my office, that I look to when good weather is needed, hopefully he doesn't let us down for the year end. I will list the pairings for the tournament at a later date and for the new members the people who you play with may or may not be on your team, so if someone you are playing with is stinking it up all you can do is hope he's not on your team.
TJ stands on top of the money board thanks to winning the Judge Smails Cup and collecting a carry-over birdie pool, but things could change with the year end doling out a good chunk of change.
Bradley's back gave out with his vicious swing and had to take the night off, looking to get a supply of happy pills to ease the pain for the year end. Thompson is heading back to the hospital for some more blood work, as his game has gone backwards since his last infusion. Rich McKenna will be missed at the year end, but his last shot in the dark on 18 was from 190 yards out, so with a 5 iron in his hands and the secret service hiding around the green, hits it and being dark his playing partners had no clue, in come the secret service to drop it in the hole and scatter. The eagle has landed.
Players who can not play in the tournament can expect a letter in the mail next April letting you know when the 2010 season begins.

Recap Week 19

I have posted the cost of the year end tournament. Click on the picture to enlarge.
Week 19 had Easton CC revert back to fast greens as you found out if you were above the hole on 6, a 3 jack was almost a given. Ed Finn had the round of the day, fresh off his new putter he bought on Ebay, arriving just in time for his round, went out and had 3 birdies, none that lived, but collected on individual, team, and CTP. He over shadowed his playing partner and leader of the tribe LB who shot an impressive round of 78 and did not collect a skin. The ever sneaky Walsh watched as these two battled it out halving hole after hole only to slip in when they both faltered. Murphy has decided to change his swing just in time for the year end. A good idea, I think not. The game is hard enough and we try all summer to get a swing that works. Oh well, good luck with that.
One week left to this wacky season and I'm not ready to go into hibernation, but as I found out last night it gets dark pretty early, it didn't stop Lyons and myself of playing the 18th hole in the dark with the bats flying overhead.

Recap Week 18

When not on his cell phone, Jim Thompson was turning in an impressive + 5 night. Who was he on the phone with, Butch Harmon? And finally, after 18 weeks, we have everyone on the money board, as Don Dillon is off the schnide by collecting $10 as Jim's partner. A good night by Peter Jaffe (+ 3 and a birdie on 3) was for naught as he had no help from his partner and his bird was covered. It was also nice to see Jerry Berke have a good night +3. Rick Walsh with an impressive CTP on 6 and the bird, but it was smashed by the steady Mike McNeice. Mike has requested that the league be played on the back nine, as he had another 37 on the way in. Rich McKenna with another ho-hum 17 points. He's a points machine. Frank Stefanick and Dave Peters continue to move up the money list with birds on 2 and 7, respectively.

Two nights left, and then the year-end on Sunday, 10/11 at 11:30 AM. You must let us know if you can't play. Cost and details to follow soon.

Also, our sympathies go out to John and Ed MacNeil for a recent family loss.

Recap Week 17

The year is winding down and a number of league members had their best rounds of the year with the greens starting to get back into shape. Jim Lyons had a personal best of 76 followed by Rich McKenna who just kept piling up the pars to shoot a 1 over 72. Nine hole candidates had Billy Karas shoot 1 over he also broke 80, Stefanick was 2 over and the last two were Halon and Peters. Thompson continues to struggle as the left right...left right army golf is not working. The year end is approaching and we are going to need a head count for catering purposes, so if you can't make it on October 11, let us know as the league is charged for the meal. The price is still to be determined.

Recap Week 16

I knew driving to the course this was going to be a weird one. Route 495 had a plane crash in Mansfield detouring my travel to Easton. I get to the course and the greens have been irrigated and the kids from Stoughton, just as I expected, lined the porch delaying our league from getting out at our usual time. I had only one thing in mind and that was to get a birdie knowing with the putting greens filled with holes and sand that one birdie would be enough to cash in on this carryover week. I lipped out on 4 and there went my chance. Larosa birdied the 6th with the pin in back and that looked like a sure winner only to have the red hot Mike McNeice birdie it also. Walsh managed to sink his 7 footer on 2, but with McKenna yet to play the hole that too was knocked out. Bradley's putt on 9 was looking real good only to have one of the little holes take it off course and just miss. That left my partner from the Judge Smail's Cup TJ with the only birdie that held up on 9 to take home the carryover money and vault him into a commanding lead on the money board.
Round of the week goes to Mike McNeice who didn't let the greens bother him as he shoots 78 and collects top individual and team honors. Walsh again lucks out with a partner who carries him into the winners circle. Oh did I mention there was a full moon which might account for these cwayzee happenings.
The Stoughton kids are something we have to deal with the rest of the way, so if you can get out early I suggest you play before 3, just make sure you play with someone in the league.

Recap Week 15

I'll start by saying that the Year End Tournament is Sunday October 11 @11:30 with the price to be determined.
I know the year is coming to an end when I play the 18th hole in the dark and soon the porch will be filled with Stoughton High kids, so get to the course as early as you can so you don't get stuck behind these hackers.
The round of the week goes to Mike Bradley who if he didn't have a brain cramp putting on the 9th hole after reaching in 2 would have had closest to the pin and won the birdie pool. I guess he wasn't alone as 2 others reached 9 in 2 and did the same leaving Walsh's 6'6" to win closest to the pin.
I say if your going to have a bad day hopefully the person your teamed up with also has one. That was the case with Stefanick and Thompson with a close to record breaking minus 13 total.

Recap of the Judge Smails Cup Finals

The finals had Peters and the free swinging Bamford against TJ and myself. The first hole had Bamford put his drive it into the driving range twice which left this recurring theme of Peters to try and fend myself and TJ off. I sunk a long par putt on 1 as I had done in the previous 3 matches to put us up 1. TJ made a putt on 3 to go 2 up. Bamford was getting 4 shots and blasted a drive on 5, but his next shot was the dreaded shank and put him out of the hole and leave Peters to make a 5 to stay 2 down. The 6th, I drove the ball just over the green in the rough and Peters was safely on, but with a long putt. I chipped up close and made the putt and Peters could not 2 putt and suddenly they were 3 down. Bamford on 7 after a wild 2nd shot chipped to a 4 footer and made the putt finally helping his partner out with a 4 net 3. I birdied the 9th to make it 3 up going into the back 9. This is the first 18 hole match in Judge Smails Cup history, so Peters and Bamford still have a chance to come back. TJ and myself quickly start the back with par, par, par to go 5 up and this locomotive is starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The match was dormie with 4 holes left when, Sweet mother of Pearl Bamford strikes again with an approach shot on 15 that left him with a tap in par, still these two need a miracle to happen and their dreams of getting the Judge Smails Cup ended on 16 when Bamford was between a rock and a hard place and Peters needing to chip in for birdie, while TJ and myself were safely on and putting for birdie, it didn't happen and the coveted cup belongs to TJ and Bino who dinged and donged through each of the matches to become Champions of the 2009 Judge Smails Cup.

Elsewhere in the league for the second time this year Stefanick takes home all the birdie money with a birdie on 8 and takes over the top spot on money leader board. He loves this league. McNeice wishes the league was the back 9 as he follows last weeks 35 with a blazing 36.
The league now hits the home stretch with the year end just over the horizon. Details on that will be posted in the coming weeks.
