Recap Week 16

The great weather has continued to grace us as we are fast approaching the end of the year, and it was no surprise that we had a good turnout. The back nine was closed for aeration, so the front was played twice, and everything worked out well with porch boss Steve Romano smoothly working everyone in. For such a good night and good course conditions, scores basically, ah ... sucked. There were only six golfers who exceeded quota, and we had 20 golfers who were -3 or worse. Are we getting burntout? (Don't go blaming high quotas or you will get Bino steaming mad.)

However, we did have some impressive exceptions to the suck rule: Featured golfer of the night was Steve Peterson who had an outstanding 37, worth 18 points for a +5 and the Individual prize. Nice to see both Blake Willard and Bino make it onto the money board for the first time by grinding to Team honors at +3.

The door was wide open on Hole 2 for Closest to Pin, so Steve DaSaro said, "If nobody wants it, I'll take it," and will be rewarded with $20 for his approach to 15 feet.

Unlike recent weeks, the birdie pool wasn't hogged by one guy, as four will share the bounty: Steve Lozzi continues his quiet but impressive season with a bird on 1; Rick Walsh had a fine night and will collect on 4; Steve DaSaro (it was a good night to be a Steve) almost eagled 7 and had a tap in; and Frank LaRosa handled 8 with ease. Covered holes were 3 (Payne, Peterson) and 9 (Walsh, Finn) - Rick had the shortest-lived skin as Ed dropped his in almost before Rick could get his ball out of the hole.

In the new technology department: Mike Kelly wants it known far and wide that he loves his new Calloway Razr irons, and with his first swing of his 7 iron put it on the first green from 224 yards out. (Mike, the Biogenesis lab called and said your "prescription" is ready.)

And it was nice to speak this week with Peter Jaffe who was wounded in action a few weeks ago. Peter is still recuperating and rehabbing and is hoping to be back in action next year.

The NFL season is almost here, but you still have time to get in the exciting Obo elimination pool. For $30 you could be the winner-take-all survivor, and unseat defending champ SIGLer Bob (Chronic) Frick. E-mail Bino if you are interested, and he will send you the invite. Don't be shut out. Here is the link.

The year-end tourney will be on our dance card real soon, and it looks like there will be a healthy amount of money for greens fee subsidies for non-Easton players, prize money, and a sumptuous banquet. Three players have confirmed that they cannot play, If you can't play, you must let us know in a couple of weeks. Thanks.

And finally, as I'm sure you are all aware,on the Chinese calendar this is the Year of the Water Snake; Well,on the SIGL calendar, this is the Year of the Belly Ache, especially when it come to the year-end tourney. Recent requests and complaints include: Can you move the week of the tourney? Can we play Saturday instead of Sunday? Can we play earlier in the day?, Can we play later in the day? I don't want to play with so and so. I want to play with so and so. Can I be in the first group? Can I be in the last group? What are we having for a meal? I don't like the format. Why do I have to play with strangers? Can I invite a guest as a fill-in? Why do I have to pay for the tourney? I didn't like what you wrote in the recap. My quota is too high. I had a bad week, why didn't my quota go down? Will pacifiers be provided for the tourney or should I bring my own? What time should my mother pick me up? Jeez, Louise!

I know we went co-ed this year, but I didn't realize that we had turned into an all-women's league. Next year, please make checks payable to S.I.S.C.: Stoughton Industrial Sewing Circle.

(Okay, now for all you newly-offended readers; lighten up - I'm only kidding, sort of.)

    See you next Tuesday.

Recap Week 15

As we come down the home stretch, we are having the best weather of the year, and course conditions are ideal, with immaculate greens. Matt, Ed and the crew have done a great job again this year. (And there's even sand in the bunkers.)

It took a while, but Dwayne Snell finally got it going and was the featured golfer of the night. At +3 he teamed up with steady Dave Naimo to snag Team honors, and and also found a way to get the ball to 3'4" on the 9th Hole to steal Closest to the Pin. I was already counting my CTP money after sticking a nifty pitch shot to 4'7", but Dwayne had other ideas, and took the unconventional approach of firing a low line drive into and through the bunker and rolling it to the cup. Which only proves two things: 1) It's not how, it's how many, and 2) There's more than one way to skin a cat, if you're into skinning cats. Dana Willard, dodging incoming missiles from the rear, had his best night of the year at +5 and will be rewarded with the Individual prize.

There were eight birdies on the night, and for at least the fourth time this year, only one survived. This week's lucky recipient of $100 is T.J., who is now officially prohibited from any further complaining about not winning any money this year. T was able to focus well enough to sink the birdie putt despite the bottle rockets and firecrackers exploding in one of the backyards along the 3rd fairway. Covered birds were on 6 (Bino, McDermott), 8 (Turchette, Finn) and 9 (Barry, Snell, Meyer).

It was nice to see, with only a few weeks left, that three out of the four cash winners this week were first-time winners. A notable performance was turned in by Mike Fay who doubled his quota for a +4, and high-pointers this week were Ed Finn, T.J., and Frank LaRosa at 15.

The year-end tourney on 9/22 is fast approaching and it is important that you let us know if you cannot play. You will be throwing away league money if you are a no-tell, no-show, because we must pay for you. So far, we have two who have informed us that they will not be playing. Anyone else, please let us know within the next two weeks. Thanks.

As agreed by virtually all, we will not be playing the 20th week of the season. The money saved will be put toward reducing the tourney greens fees of non-Easton C.C. SIGLers.

    See you next Tuesday.

Recap Week 14

The lesson to be learned from this week is that meteorologists are an untrustworthy lot. The next time the weather comes on TV, do something useful with your time, like watching some porn on your computer or something, because relying on the weather forecast is worse than a waste of time. Based on the forecast, we had 20 no shows on what turned out to be one of the better nights of the year.

Even though the weather and course were both good, for some reason very few played well, with only seven golfers besting their quota. One exception was Mike Bradley who had an impressive +5 night to win Individual and is in good shape for his Easton C.C. match play final, if only his opponent would stop ducking him. Team honors went to Mike (+5) and Scott Silvia (-2), which proves two things: it pays to be an alternate and it pays to have the right partner. High-pointer for the night was Ed Finn with 16. And it was nice to see Greg Jurgilewicz grind through a bad back for +3 and 15 points.

With barely a quorum, there were only five birdies on the night, and Larry Anshewitz will collect the entire pot with a lone skins birdie on Hole 2, and vault to the top of the money board. (Larry just came back from an exciting trip to the backwoods of Alabama, which was going great until the banjo music started. Now that he is safely home, he plans on putting the $100 toward his upcoming proctologist visit.) Other birds were on 4 (Bradley, Finn) and 8 (Jurgy, Dawn Weber).

And Jim Lyons salvaged an otherwise lackluster night with a neat approach on 8 to 4' 6" to capture closest to the pin. Jim was just outside his comfort range of 4' 3" so he missed the birdie putt.

With Peter Jaffe on the disabled list for the rest of the year, the call has gone down to Pawtucket for Brian Fellows, who will join oddfellows Marshal, Don and Jim on the roster for the remainder of the season. Welcome aboard Brian.

The people have spoken, and we will forego the 20th week of the season and put the extra cabbage toward year-end tourney prize money. Now that we are coming down the home stretch, the pool of alternates will be limited to those who have yet to win any money; trying to spread the wealth, ya know.

And finally, with five weeks left, the regular season leading money winner crown is still up for grabs, with Dawn Weber and Steve Lozzi close behind Larry A. This impressive trio is also battling it out for Rookie of the Year honors. In the event of a tie, the winner will be determined by either an arm-wrestling or mud-wrestling contest during the year-end banquet.

     See you next Tuesday.
