Recap Week 13

The day started (5 AM) with thunder and lightning and 12 hours later, we had an encore right in the middle of our rounds. The bolts of lightning were intense, and were too close for comfort, so most in S.I.G.L. (Sensible, Intelligent Golf League) took refuge in the clubhouse while a few S.I.G.L.ers (Seriously Impaired Golf Lunatics) played right through the million volts of electricity like Alfred E. Neuman (What, me worry?)

Where was everybody? We had one of the  worst attendance nights since the rains in May, and one of the worst nights for scores. Last week there were 13 birdies and this week we had just three. The greens were fuzzy and slow and  apparently nobody got the ball to the hole. There were two birds on 9 and a sole birdie on 4: Terence Moore must have been inspired by the British Open in his native England as he went from winless to 4th place on the money list all with one putt.

And after a slow start to his season, what has gotten into Dave Peters lately? Another $40 night with closest to the pin on 4 (Terence says, "Thanks for missing the putt, Dave.') and leading the winning team, along with steady Eddie Finn, who was high point-getter with 16. Ed will put the dough into the tank of his Harley Road King for his trip next week to Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island and the Cabot Trail. Safe travels, Ed. And Ted Meyer had an impressive +3 night to snag individual honors in a cardoff with Dave Peters and Dave Naimo.

In the S.I.G.L ers Are Tough To Beat Dept.:  The Easton C.C. match play tourney has reached the championship match, which, for their division, will be between T.J. James and Jim Lyons this weekend. Good luck to both.

And finally, for you guys who haven't been seen  for a few weeks, give us a call or e-mail and let us know what's going on. If it is an incarceration problem (prison, work, family), maybe we can talk to the warden (warden, boss, wife) and arrange for a Tuesday afternoon furlough under the golf-release program.

Recap Week 12

First thing every golfer should learn is not to listen to the  weatherman(babe). To hear them tell it yesterday, it was so hot that you would practically erupt into flames after being outside for five minutes. Apparently, a lot you must have listened because attendance was sparse. (More money for the year-end tourney.)  It turned out that a hardy breeze made it a great night for golf, and I believe we had no heat-related fatalities.

Of those who did show, we had a lot of good scores, with 13 birdies. Player of the week goes to Ed MacNeil (the not as crazy brother) who had a +4, good for team and individual honors. Mike Kelly held steady to ride with Ed to the team prize. Blake Willard put it in tight on 2 to snag CTP honors, and collect money for the second week in a row. Apparently, he  missed the birdie putt, for which Dave Naimo is grateful because that allowed his bird to hold up giving him $30 in gas money for his commute back to New Hampshire. Joe Curtis' birdie on 4 survived and Dave Peters continues his good play, and gets rewarded with a paying birdie on 6. Birds on 3, 5, and 9 (5 of them) were covered. Pride of Quincy and Archie's, Chris Sullivan may not have had a great night but he was still basking in the glory of last week's round when he holed out on 7 from 140 yards. (Our Hole 7 course reporter must have been on coffee break at the time because we missed the story.)

Congrats go out Jim Lyons who advanced to the third round of the Easton C.C. match play tourney with an exciting 1 up victory last weekend. Also, good luck to Mike McNeice and Tommy James who are also still in the hunt. It just goes to show again what the golfing world has known for a long time: SIGLers are tough to beat. Bino took another night off, but hopes to make an appearance next  week.

For those who have inquired, the year end tourney is scheduled for Sunday, 9/23/12 at about 11:20 AM.

Next week is Week 13 and there are still a handful of players who have not paid for the second half. If you don't bring payment next week, then don't bother signing in because you are out. (Always leave 'em laughing!)

Recap

After a rough weather start to the season, we've now been on a run of beautiful nights. The Law of Averages always prevails.

You'd think scores would be better, but I guess the putts just weren't dropping. After 15 birdies last week, there were only 3 this week, all of which lived.

There were a few with good scores though. Player of the week goes to Dave Peters (soon to be) of Hilton Head, S.C. who doubled his 8 point quota with a 38, good for 16 points. And all without the aid of a birdie. During our scrumptous ribs AND pulled pork dinner, Mike McNeice tried to get him to submit to a drug test, and Dave did have to acknoweldge that the beta-bogey-blockers that he's been taking are starting to show results. (Another half a pill a day, Dave, should  get rid of those bogeys on 6 and 9.)

Other players of note were Jim Egan (+4), who also doubled his quota, John Tracy at +4 and a bird, and Frank LaRosa with 18 points and a birdie. Frank has felt the heat of  the the Young Turks gaining on him on the money list so decided to pad his lead with a little more cash last night. And Jim Thompson is on the comeback trail with a closest to pin on 9 that set him up for a 5'9" birdie. Blake Willard, who has been playing alot of good golf without alot to show for it, finally had some good fortune by riding along with Dave's +8 to garner team honors as a paper alternate.

Last night payments were due for the second half and the results were, um, pathetic. (Ten payments).  After four "I forgot my checkbook" excuses, I was almost ready for "The dog ATE my checkbook."  If you think you may have amnesia or Alzheimer's, go see a doctor, but otherwise PAY NEXT WEEK. Anyone who does not pay next week will not be eligible for any prize money next week.

And finally, after working his way back last week, Bino had a little setback with his neck and decided to put himself on the disabled list hopefully the 15 and not the 60 day. As noted golfer Jesse Jackson (big hitter, the reverend) says: Keep hope alive!

Recap Week 10

A beautiful night at Easton, good turnout, and some really good golf was played, with a season high 15 birdies.

Round of the night goes to Ed Finn who had a 37/77 for 18 points and a $45 birdie, not to mention taking some extra cash from his playing victims, I mean, partners. His bird on 2 rattled back and forth twice before settling in at the bottom of the cup. At least he didn't give a concussion to any animals like he did Saturday at Lakeville, where he holed his putt on the 7th only to conk a toad in the head who was hanging out in the hole, and squishing the poor little critter into the flagstick hole. But with his Pied Piper-like touch and strong fingers, Ed inticed him out of the hole. St. Andrew's may have the Road Hole, but who ever heard of a Toad Hole?  He was last seen hopping his way toward the 8th tee.

Also impressive was Eric Aronson who was +6, good enough for individual honors and a birdie that lived and John DiSilvestro at +5 winning team honors with a steady Tommy James and closest to the pin on the 8th.  John, who seems to be making the most of retirement, started off with a bang by birdieing the 1st, but it was later covered.

Of the 15 birdies, only two lived: Ed on 2 and  Eric on 3.  Birdies on 1, 4, 5, 8, and 9 were all covered. Two birds each by Blake Willard and this humble hacker went for naught.  Impressive rounds by players that didn't cash include Blake at +5  and 17 points, and Chris Sullivan at +3. Bino survived another week of work and came through with a +4. The neck has forced him to play by Julius Boros' motto: Swing easy, hit hard. Who knew?

The ribs dinner is planned for next Tuesday after golf. If you haven't signed up yet but want to attend, please e-mail me (larrybarry@verizon.net) by Friday.

ATTENTION:  The second half payment is due next week: $305.  Please pay on time.

Also, our condolesences go out to Frank LaRosa and his family for their recent loss.

And finally, to all the Americans in the league, have a safe and happy Fourth of July. Please use caution when handling caps, firecrackers, sparklers, bottle rockets, electric vibrators near the pool, Roman candles, TNT, and surface-to-air missiles. You can still have fun without someone losing an eye.
