Recap Week 10

We hit the half way point and lightning has stuck me twice. I went from never birdieing the 18 hole to doing on back to back weeks. Newsflash....Barry annihilates opponent in match play moving on to the finals. Tom Ritchie gets on the money board in a big way collect top, team and birdie money. Greg Willard almost made it 5's across the board. It's only good if your playing all par 5's, otherwise not so much. Larosa's troubles turned worse when his PW hit the golf cart in disgust snapping it in half...off to Joe & Leighs you go. Tibbetts plays his last night with an almost deja vu  eagle on 18. Work takes us away from the game we love to play, that and the weather. Aronson has his best round of the year and if not for Lionel...I mean Tom Ritchie he would have had top honors. John MacNeil collects on another birdie to widen his lead on top of the money board.
Judge Smails Cup will begin on week 12 so get your teams in. Details next week!!!
Ritchie McKenna sighting.....drinking beer at 8 AM Saturday morning. We miss the big guy.

Recap Week 3

I said in the first recap that weather could be a crap shoot the first few weeks. Tuesday it turned ugly with the wind blowing over 25 Mph. It made for a nice 6th and 7th holes as all you had to do was get it air borne. I kept waking up in the middle of the night dreaming an underage Eskimo in a moving Igloo chasing me around the golf course oh wait it was the cart girl.  The greens, although they were top dressed were not that bad. The back nine was closed and it was just as well a chisel would have been need to carve my frozen body of the course.

Recap Week 9

The summer solstice was on Tuesday and the stars were aligned. Just like Whitey Bulger was found by the FBI, I found my swing, and for the first time birdied the 18th hole only to be matched by my playing partner Jim Lyons. This boy eats gorilla meat, his drive on 18 left him with 115 to the green. I no sooner finish the 18th when I hear a cheer and look behind me to see Kelly and Tibbetts giving a chest bump. Tibbetts holes out from 155 for an eagle. The ball he used was one he found in the woods on 17. It had the name Frank Larosa printed on the side of it. He kept the ball.
This was a perfect night to play golf and Walsh gets his game out of reverse and charge forward with his best round of the year and take top honors.
Fitzpatrick hearing that the midyear tournament is coming, snaps out of his funk to get ready to defend his title of the Judge Smails Cup. It’s been a year since we’ve seen the Judge Smails Cup and like the Stanley Cup it has traveled around with Fitzpatrick being showcased at parties, bar mitzvah’s, wedding receptions and just out with the fellas on a Friday night.
Congratulations to Dana Willard who had his first birdie on the 4th hole, unfortunately it did not hold, but he too had his best round.
LB and Greg Jurgilewitz had a match play tournament as being members of Easton, with LB giving Jurgy 4 shots. Jurgy shakes off some early jitters by birding the 3rd hole to get back to 1 down. This match was a grind for both as Jurgy hung tough with LB sinking a number of must make putts. Jurgy goes 1 up after 13 and with Amen Corner lurking ahead and stroke holes coming up on 15 and 17, he can smell victory. LB is tournament tested and now has to win the 18th to send it to extra holes. He does and back to 1 they go. LB has a tough putt on 1 from the fringe needing to make it with Jurgy on in 2 and stroking, LB sinks it, but Jurgy has a chance to end it from 8 feet, just misses and LB dodges a bullet. The 3rd extra hole sinks Jurgy as he finds the water but, he chips in for a bogey to make LB 2 putt for par. He does to end the match. We can only hope to have such a match in our Midyear.
Week 10 is here and so are the 2nd half dues. See LB or Bino
The committee is working on a fair system for the upcoming mid-year. Do stay tuned!!

Recap Week 8

Brrrrrr....another chilly day at the course and I'm guessing the guy who sets the pin placement has something against the SIGL as most were either 2 steps off the front on 2 steps off the back. Sick bastard!!!! That did not stop Alex Turchette who caught fire after the first hole to break 40 and collect top honors for the week. Stefanick and myself were lucky enough to have our birdies hold and split the birdie pool. I tossed away the new swing and brought back the old one and it paid off with my best round of the year. Lessons are for those who have time to practice and most of us don't.
Last call at the bar and it was time to go and as I exit the parking lot everyone gets into their cars and here comes Mike Kelly in his own golf cart driving it home to park it in the barn. He lives off the 18th green. No designated driver for this guy just watch out for the coyotes.
I get a lot of questions about quotas, and as Bill Belichick would say "it is what it is".
The US Open Championship is this week and up for grabs is the US Open Championship Trophy, which is nothing compared the coveted Judge Smails Cup. It's time to start picking your partners and submitting it to LB or Bino. It is the usual match play format. More info in the weeks to come.

Recap Week 7

SERENITY NOW....SERENITY NOW....I took lessons one year ago and all I can say is I hit the ball further into the woods than I use to. Time to go back to a pitching wedge swing.
John Tracy had the shot of the day in what was looking like his worst day quota wise turned into his best by holing out from 80 yards on 8 for an eagle.
Scott Silvia had the hat-trick collecting on CTP a birdie on 4 and team honors.
A MacNeil has collected in 5 straight weeks...How long will the streak last? This is like midget wrestling tag team. John your up!!!
Rounds of the day go to Mike McNeice who shot 74 with a double on 9. Steve Peterson,if not for a hiccup on 2 would have won top honors. LB who if he did not try chopping down a cherry tree with hedge cutters and injuring his wrist could be a single digit handicap, played through the pain and shot a 78.
Midyear tournament is inching closer...details to come in the next couple of weeks.

Recap Week 6

I have a new name for my golf ball. I call it Sheba. I keep yelling for it to come back. The game is hidden within me. I still trying to find it.
Tibbetts had a interesting first couple of holes, clanging the driving range fence, only to get a members bounce into the middle of the fairway. He crushes his second shot on 2 and what looks certain to go out of bounds on the left ricochets off a tree to the fringe of the green and gets his 3rd shot to 9'3" good for closest to the pin. Tibbetts wants to know the situation for triple E in Easton as he comes in after playing 27 holes with mosquito bites all over.
Ippolito just misses a birdie on 8 which would have doubled his quota points, but settled for a bogey and a minus 1 for the day.
Walsh who's year is stuck in reverse had what his group calls a couple of chippy innees. These guys play for all kinds of skins. Sandies, Birdies, Greenies and the chippy innees.
A suggestion box will be at the bar for a new name for this golf phrase as it sounds a little swishy, "not that theres anything wrong with that".
Karas and his new bionic shoulders gets top honors with a +7.
Lyons comes out of the gate with a birdie on 1 and he's loving his new Mizuno clubs.
