WEEK 13 CTP    2ND HOLE

The weather threatened but didn't dare break up our run of great Tuesdays although staying in the shade helped to get through the round. Scores were a bit above normal with 22 players exceeding quota, 15 hitting their number exactly, and 16 falling short.

There was a handful of big plus scores and they were led by Greg Paone's big night. With three birds, five pars and a bogey, it doesn't take a math teacher to figure out that that comes out to a two under par 34 (career low?), a mighty 23 points, and a winning +9 for 1st Individual.

We had a backup at +7 for 2nd, among Dan McGarry, Chris Sullivan, Jamie Gormley, and Bob Shannon, and Jamie settled that quickly with his birdie on 1, his first of the year coming at an opportune time.

Mr. Gormley and his +7 also had the good fortune to have a solid partner this week so Scott Silvia's strong +3 will give the duo an outstanding +10 and 1st Team. Being paired with standout Greg Paone, Eric Aronson didn't hurt the cause with an Even, so they took 2nd Team with +9.

On the 9th hole, we had the rare tie for Closest to Pin with Greg Willard and Mike Wall both recording 8'10" and so the prize will be split.

We had a plentiful 16 birdies on the front with three paying off.
Jamie Gormley's 3 on the opening hole held up, Greg Paone's bird on 5 paid off, and Chris Sullivan, who had a career high 12 points bagged a skin on the 7th hole.

Covered holes: 2nd (Paone, McNeice, Walsh), 4th (Wall, Aronson), 6th (Musgrove, L. Silva), 8th (Paone, J. MacNeil) and the 9th (B. Shannon, G. Willard, Wall, L. Silva). The 3rd was the only hole without a circle.

The Back Nine birdie pool had 26 entrants and four winners: Greg Willard on 10, Mark Nolan, the 14th, Alex Turchette 15, and Bill Doonan on 18. Birdies on 12 (M. Silva, Lozzi, Regan), 13 (M. Silva, Silvia, G. Willard, D. Willard) and 16 (M. Silva, Mark Nolan, Sullivan, Turchette).

Notables who did not cash were Dan McGarry and Bob Shannon at +7, Wayne Musgrove at +6, and Lou Silva and Steve Dasaro at +4. Highpointer was Greg Paone.

And in the Grind It Out Dept.: Mark Spears had the hardest earned point you can imagine on the 3rd hole Tuesday:  First tee shot OB left. Second tee ball in woods on right, punch out to fairway, now laying 4. Sky it over the water and drop it in the hole for a 5. Nice.

As we start the second half, welcome aboard to newcomers Bob Shannon and Bill McIntyre.

Three times in the last two weeks, players have asked how to collect their winnings from the previous week: We thought it was pretty clear all year: If you have an envelope coming from the previous week, tell the desk clerk when you sign in, and he will give it to you.

And finally, this weekend brings Massachusetts amateur golf's premier event with the two-day Easton Country Club's club championship. Good luck to all SIGLers!

  See you next Tuesday.

MR. PAONE, I CAME UP WITH 23

                         OKAY THANKS SALLY

HIGHPOINTERS    DAN SVIRSKY              19 pts.
                                    GREG WILLARD          19 pts.

Our run of good Tuesday weather continues and so does our good play. Star of the day this week is Dan Svirsky, who tied his Easton CC career low round with a 75, and for the league nine, a super even par 36, good for 19 points and a +9. Also, having his best night of the year was Greg Willard with his own 19 points, for a nice +7.

Dan had more than enough from his partner, Dana Willard, who chipped in with his own +4 to easily take 1st Team at +13. Willard the Younger's partner also did not disappoint as Mark Spears posted a solid +1 to take 2nd Team at +8.

There were numerous tight shots into the 8th Hole, but none better than Ed Finn's 7'9" as he took Closest to Pin honors.

There were a healthy 14 birdies on the front, three of which will be rewarded with cash. Lou Silva made up for a wayward tee ball on 4 with a pitch-in from the pine straw flat behind the hole to record a deuce, Greg Willard will add to his Team and Individual prizes with a skin on the 5th, and Scott Silvia continues his fine play, and this week will get paid for his birdie on 7. The 2nd (Loring, M. Silva), 3rd (Bourne, Paone), 6th (Frasca, Svirsky). 8th (Finn, Bourne), and the 9th (L. Silva, G. Willard, Paone) were smashed.

The Back Nine skins pool continues to grow, and this week, we had 29 entrants. Rich White took only two shots to complete the 10th hole for the rare par-4 eagle, ace Chris Regan cashed with a birdie on 14, Bob Loring capped off an outstanding night with a winning bird on 15, and his partner Steve Lozzi was not to be outdone, so did the same on the 16th. As usual, the 13th hole had a few (Mark Nolan, Silvia, Regan.)

Outstanding but unlucky performers this week were Mike Sweet at +6, Wayne Musgrove (+5) and Babyak, Meyer, Paone, and Simmons all at +4.

Just the Facts Ma'am: To dispel the mistaken notion that playing from the combination tees is too easy for the top flight, long-hitting players, and that they are eating up the white tee holes, here are some interesting numbers: Through 11 weeks, there have been a total of 108 birdies and one eagle on the front nine. But only 16 of them have been from white tee holes.

                                           Birdies

                 Blue Tees                                          White Tees

Hole  2          14                                     Hole  1         3
Hole  3          14                                     Hole  5         6
Hole  4            9                                     Hole  7         7
Hole  6          15
Hole  8          19 and 1 eagle
Hole  9          21

Total              92 and 1 eagle                                     16

There have been 1,815 chances for birdies this year from white tee holes (an average of 55 golfers x 11 weeks x 3 holes) and there has been a total of 16 birdies, half of which are from non-A flight players, so no, the long hitters are not exactly bringing Easton to its knees from the white tees.

And again, SIGLers continue to really shine in Easton club tournaments. This week, congratulations to TJ James and Paul McDermott as part of the 1st place foursome. And a tip of the cap to the T2nd place foursome of Saul Payne, Steve Lozzi, Mike Sweet, and Mike Silva. And nabbing 4th, were Bob Loring, Greg Paone, and Rich White. Nice job men.

And finally, there was an extremely unsatisfactory 19 players who did not pay 2nd half dues as required this week. Your scores and other results will not be counted next week unless your delinquent payment is in the box by the end of the night. And for the two players who won money this week but have not paid their dues, don't be asking the desk for an envelope until you are paid up.

  See you next Tuesday.

I guess we prefer sticky, slow greens because we had alot of stellar scores resulting from 13 frontside and 11 back nine birdies.

After a very quiet season to date, Steve Dasaro broke out in fine fashion with a big 15 points from six pars and three bogeys, good for a +7 and 1st Individual honors. Right behind him was Rich White also turning in his best SIGL round of the year with a +6 for 2nd Individual.

For a team win, it usually takes two good partners and this week TJ James at +5 and the always productive Chris Regan were just that, and they will be awarded 1st Team accolades at +9.

There was a traffic jam for 2nd Team at +8 with a) Scott Silvia (+5) paired with Jim Shannon (+3), b) Steves Dasaro (+7) and Danieli (+1), and c) Chris Sullivan (+4) with Dan Szczurko (+4).
And the card-off was settled early with the Dan parring the opening hole.

Scott Silvia will not be rewarded for his birdie on 2 or his +5, but he will cash for a super shot on the 6th to 5'2" to take Closest to Pin. Apparently not wanting to appear greedy, he missed the birdie putt, allowing someone else the chance for a skin.

The greens were sloooow,  but apparently that suited SIGLers just fine as 13 birdie bids found the hole. Eric Aronson continues his good play, and will take a skin on 5, Mike Wall walked in the door left open on 6, and Joe Curtis had a surviving bird on the 7th. The 2nd hole (Regan, White, Silvia), 3rd (L. Silva, White, Moore), and 9 (Doonan, Shannon, Paone, and Aronson) were smashed.

This week, we had 23 entrants throw in for the B9 skins pool and it paid off for five. Mike Silva had bookend skins on 10 and 18 while shooting 35, Rick Walsh collects on 12, TJ had a deuce on 16, and Terry Thompson collects for his birdie on 17. Covered holes were 13 (Finn, Walsh), 14 (Lozzi, White), and 15 (Finn, Babyak). And although he didn't collect for his bird on 14, Steve Lozzi, after posting a fantastic 33 on the front side a few weeks back, again went under par on a side with a super 34 (eight pars, one birdie) on the back nine.

We had a lot of notable scores, and most of those were rewarded with cash. The unlucky winless standouts were Lou Silva and Peter Frasca at +4 each and Jim Shannon at +3. Highpointer this week was Rich White with a healthy 19 points.

We've completed the first half of the season, and at the midpoint have disbursed $2,905 in cash prizes for Team, Individual, CTP, Skins, and optional Back Nine Skins. We've had 43 out of 58 players win something. Being the waste management pro that he is, rookie Mike Wall really knows how to collect, leading the pack with $270 in prize money. As Tony Soprano might say, here are the top earners:

Mike Wall ($270), Chris Regan ($210), Lou Silva ($165), Greg Paone ($125), and Steve Lozzi ($120). Season high pointgetter with a 14.71 average is Lou Silva followed closely by Mr. Regan at 14.70.

And finally. and speaking of collections, don't forget that we begin the second half next week, and that means that the crack SIGL Accounts Receivable Department has been awoken from its ten week hibernation and will be looking for payments. $335 or $65, unless already paid in full. Please place checks or cash in the same box used for scorecards. Cash must be in a sealed envelope with your name on or in it. Thanks.

  See you next Tuesday.

WEEK 10 CTP        6TH HOLE

Unlike previous years, we have been very lucky this season weather-wise, and Tuesday was no exception. Scores were generally good with a few more plus numbers than minuses.

Breaking out with his best performance of the year was Brian Murphy who posted a sterling +6 from his 13 points earned.

Right behind Murph were his playing partner Rick Walsh, and playing partners Mike Wall and Greg Paone all at +5. And all it took in the card-off was a bogey on 1 for Greg to settle that matter, and take 2nd Individual.

Well positioned at +6 to be in the running for top team was Murphy, and scoring partner Mike Sweet did not disappoint with a solid +2 to take 1st Team at +8.

Of the +5s, Mike Wall had the best partner in Terry Thompson at +2, so they will accept 2nd Team honors. (Wall wins when he is -5 and wins when he is +5)

Early on, steady Dan Svirsky fashioned a fine shot to 9'9" on the  4th hole, and it was not bested the rest of the day, so he will proudly accept the Closest to Pin cash.

On the frontside, we had a measly five birdies and the $120 pot will be split two ways, with the silky swing of Mike McNeice bagging a deuce on the 6th, and Mike Wall landing the only bird on 8. The 9th hole went down with Mr. Wall, Greg Paone, and Wayne Musgrove recording 4s.

The Back Nine birdie pool was dusted off for the first time this year with 22 $5.00 entrants. But we only had four birdies. And with three of them on 13 (McNeice, Hrenko, Barry), that left just one uncovered birdie, and that goes to impressive rookie Chris Regan for his 3 on the 11th.

Highpointers for the day were Greg Paone and Mike Wall with 18. Honorable mention: Notable scores that did not win: Rick Walsh at +5, Chris Sullivan with +4, and Musgrove, Szczurko, Bradley, Turchette, Bourne, Payne, M. Silva, and Meyer all at +3.

Don't forget that next week (Week 10) is the end of the first half, and second half payments will be due on Week 11.

And finally, as some of you may have heard, there's been a pesky coronavirus going around, but apparently in the Easton area there is also a nasty stupidity virus spreading, too. For the second time in recent weeks, we have had entire groups not know on what holes to play White tees and on what holes to play Blue. And one group was a foursome of SIGL veterans! (For the record, no rounds played from the wrong tees will be counted.) We didn't think that we had to say this (again) but just LOOK AT THE SCORECARD. Under Combination Tees, it shows you in living color what holes are Blue and what holes are White. Jeeze Louise. Please wear effective face protection next week to keep this from spreading to other SIGL groups. Thanks.

   See you next Tuesday.

WEEK 9 CTP       4TH HOLE

Wet and soggy conditions apparently dampened scores Tuesday as only five out of 50+ players recorded +3 or better.

But that didn't stop rookie SIGLer and rookie Easton CC member Mike Sweet from having by far his best night of the year by recording a 38 (career best?) more than doubling his quota with 17 points, good for a super +9 and 1st Individual. There were not alot of other standouts but Paul Raynard continues his resurgence with an outstanding +4 to take 2nd Individual.

With a +9, Mike was in more than good position to cash in on 1st Team honors, too but he happened to draw a partner who had his first bad round of the year, so had to settle for a sweet and sour 2nd Team finish, with Sweet/Wall beating out the team of McDermott/Williams in a card-off at +4.

So that left the door open for the top Team prize, and in walked John Tracy (+3) with his best night and a solid +2 from Dan Svirsky to take 1st Team at +5.

We have resumed Closest to Pin, and sharpshooter Greg Willard fashioned one in nice and tight on the 2nd hole to take the first CTP prize of the year.

With the course playing long and putts not reaching the hole on soft greens, there were only eight birdie bids that found the (shallow) bottom of the cup, with half of those paying cash money. Mr. Willard converted his short putt on 2, putting guru Bob Bourne drained his on the 4th, John Tracy earned four points on 7, and Dan Szczurko finished strong with a bird on the 9th hole. Birdies on 3 (Lozzi, Musgrove) and 6 (Sweet, White) did not survive.

Notables who did not cash is a small list, with only Andy Pryles at +3 not getting an envelope, although 12 players recorded solid +2s. Highpointer for the day was Mike Sweet with 17.

Housekeeping: 1) We will have the kinks worked out for the Back Nine birdie pool next week, with envelopes available to deposit your 5 bucks, and be sure to write your name on the list.      2) There was a mix up with the winning envelopes from last week, but they have been located so in addition to this week's winners there are envelopes for McDermott, Heffernan, Musgrove, Shannon, Wall, and Silvia. 3) There are a couple of groups who, on a regular basis, are correctly reporting their quota points earned but overreport their plus/minus number. (For example, they report that they were +3 when they were actually +2.) Your quota requirement is liable to change week to week, so you must use that week's quota requirement instead of an outdated number. If you don't know your current quota, don't guess; just report your total points.

And finally, as usual SIGL players did themselves proud in an Easton CC tournament last weekend with Lou Silva, Len Lima, and Dan Sirsky on T1st teams, and Ed Finn, Bob Bourne, and this humble hacker taking a nice chunk of the lucrative skins pool. Good job men.

    See you next Tuesday.

                                HOW SWEET IT IS!
