Recap Week 18

It may have taken 18 weeks, but dammit, SIGL came to play this week! The fairways and particularly the greens are in super shape, the weather was mid-season hot, and it all came together for most of the crew, with collectively, the best performance of the year.

After being quiet for a while, it has been quite a week for rookie Greg Paone who led his team to victory in the Easton C.C. VJL Cup on Sunday, and last night exploded for 22 points, on the back of 4 birdies, to take Individual at +7. All Greg needed to sew up Team honors was to have a partner who broke even, but, not mentioning any names (Johnny Mac) was one of the few to have a poor night and was as much under quota as G.P. was over, finishing even as a team.

Our favorite car man, Gentleman Jim Egan has been firing on all cylinders and turned in his best performance of the year at +5. Sean Costello, who seems to have the luck of the Irish with him lately, came in with a solid +1 to partner with Jim for the Team prize.

And good guy Steve Lozzi feathered a nice one in to 7'3" to prevail for Closest to the Pin on the 4th hole.

SIGL sharpshooters were throwing darts at the pins, and there were what might be an all-time record (the SIGL research department is on it) 20 birdies on the night. In fact, the only holes not to be birdied were 1 and 5. As usual, 8 and 9 gave it up easily for a combined total of 7 birds. With so many birdies, it was only natural that a lot of them were covered, and when the dust finally cleared, there was only one left standing. And that, fittingly, was the 7th hole, so the whole pot will go to the red-hot Mr. Paone, resulting in a very profitable $133, enough maybe to by his playing partners a beer. Even more impressive was the fact that he birdied 7, which had an extreme back pin with a RED flag! Hard-luck players of the night were Bob Loring and John Tracy, who covered each other on the difficult back pin 6th hole.

As noted, there were plenty of outstanding scores turned in and honorable mention goes to our favorite dentist, Saul Payne at +5 with two birdies but no luck of the Irish, always dependable Mike McNeice with a 37 good for +4 and 18 points, playing partners Steve Dasaro (+4) and Terry Moore (+3), and Paul Begley at +3. (Steve and Terry are warming up for an Irish golf trip in about a month, but don't forget that you have an 8:00 AM tee time on Sept. 28th at Easton C.C.).

From the Lost and Not Yet Found Dept.: On the way back to the clubhouse, the Closest to the Pin weapon, I mean marker, mysteriously disappeared. I refuse to believe the rumor that the placard was pilfered by Donnelly Advertising, who plans to use it as a small billboard. One fan of the marker seems to be our still favorite dentist, who hit the CTP stick a few weeks ago, and last night took dead aim at it again. Saul, next week, we will provide instructions on how Closest to the Pin works.

Also missing is Bino's Taylor Made Burner pitching wedge, and so whoever turns it in will get 5 points taken off your quota for a week. (Don't try taking some piece of shit wedge from your basement and giving that to him, because that won't work.)

And finally, as you saw last night, Easton sanded the backside greens last night and will do the front this week, too. Their next project is to sand the bunkers.

    See you next week.

Recap Week 17

We have only a few weeks left, the weather is perfect, conditions are the best they have been, and yet we still had 16 no shows. That just means that much more prize money for the year-end tourney.

Believe it or not, only 11 golfers met or exceeded quota, and no one had a breakout night. All it took to win Team was a +1, which was done by steady Steve Lozzi (+1) and steadier Mike McNeice (E). Ed MacNeil and Mike Kelly led the pack for Individual at +3, with Easy Ed taking the cake on a card off.

T.J. went out early and posted 6' 9" on the 2nd hole, and no one was able to add to the list, so T hangs on for Closest to the Pin.

We had a respectable 12 birdies, but, as usual, we beat the 8 and 9th holes into a bloody pulp for nine of those, which leaves only three that will pay off: Always trying to outdo his brother, Johnny MacNeil came out fast and strong with a birdie on 1, Mike Kelly continues his late season money surge with a bird on 3, and Ed Finn, playing his 5th straight day after playing 108 holes in four days of New Hampshire golf along with seven other SIGL ne'er do wells, drained a beauty of a downhiller on the 6th to stay atop the leader board just ahead of the pesky Johnny Mac.

Other notables include high-pointer Greg Paone at 17 points, and his partner Len Lima, and resurgent Jim Egan at +2 each. Based on performance, most of the rest of you will be relieved that you are not mentioned.

And finally, a Happy Birthday shout-out today to the big guy, Sean Costello, who won't say how old he is, but will say that he is like a snow plow: he's got a lot of hard miles on him.

    See you next Tuesday.

Recap Week 16

Conditions at Easton are the best they have been all year, the weather has been perfect, attendance was good, and a lot of good scores were turned in. As we head down the homestretch, it's all coming together.

This week's profiled golfer is good neighbor Mike Kelly, who came through with his best round of the year. After a double-bogey start, Mike settled down to produce 15 points, good for a +5 and Individual honors. And teammate Bill Pope came on strong at the end with a birdie on 9 to snag a +2, and share the Team prize with Mike at +7.

Par 5 Closest to the Pins are guaranteed to always be close, and this week was no different. Numerous shots were within ten feet, but Greg Willard ultimately whittled it down to 3' 10" to earn an envelope. (And it was nice to see that Saul Payne took dead aim at the PIN this week, as opposed to nailing the CTP marker in his last outing.)

There were a liberal 15 birdies on the night, but only three that lived. Joe Curtis, so anxious to get on the course that he forgot to sign in for the second week in a row, (Joe, we have enough "desk" problems as it is) came out of the gate strong with a bird on 1, Eric Aronson rebounded from the doldrums with a birdie on 3, and this humble hacker rolled one in on the 4th. Covered birdies were had on 2, 6, 8, and 9.

Highpointer for the night was sweet-swinging Mike McNeice who had a routine (for him) 16 points. With his consistently superlative play and plenty of birdies, it is hard to believe that he has yet to collect an envelope, earning hard-luck player of the year honors to date. (Last year, despite solid play and plenty of birdies, Dave Weber got shut out in the regular season, but more than made up for it by cashing for over $400 in the year-end tournament. So for all of you with goose eggs so far, keep hope alive!)

Other notables for the night were Rick Walsh and Dana Willard, both at +3 and Steve Peterson with 15 points.

And finally, Easton C.C. held its annual club championship last weekend, and we're proud to report that SIGLers came through with flying colors: Paul McDermott played two days of outstanding golf to capture the C Division crown, and the A bracket title came down to former SIGL great Rich McKenna versus current SIGL great Bob Frick. It was still unsettled until the 36th hole, and when a 20-foot putt by Bob didn't fall, Rich took the laurel wreath. (Rich once played nine SIGL holes with only a putter on a bet that he couldn't get a quota point that way. He won the bet.) Congratulations to all the winners and to all SIGLers who gave it their best.

   See you next Tuesday.
