Recap Week 14

SIGL is beginning to stand for Schizophrenic Industrial Golf League; one week, we can't swing our way out of a paper bag, and the next, we're lighting up the course, one of the toughest in all of Easton, like actual skilled golfers. From four and five birdies the last two weeks, we came alive with a season-high 18 last night.

Week 14 was the season premier of the Johnny Fay Show, as he had (a career best?) 37 good for 18 points and easily taking Individual at +9. Dwayne Snell drew a lucky hand, and will gladly accept $25 with which to buy John a beer.

A lot of good rounds were carded and other notables include Paul Raynard, Bill Pope, and the Bob Twins; Loring and Frick all at +3. Highpointer for the night was Star of the Day Fay.

The Quiet Man, Paul McDermott tucked it close to a tough front pin on the 6th hole to snag CTP at 6' 1".

As noted, the ball was finding the cup all night as 18 dropped for birds. Not only were the 8th and 9th holes humbled, they were practically sodomized, as SIGL sharpshooters found the hole a total of 11 times for birdie between the two. Other covered birds were carded on 2 and 6. In fact, about the only disappointment that J. Fay had on the night was when his birdie on 6 was covered by rookie Ryan Burke with a curling cross-green downhill 65 footer.

Dr. Saul Payne filled the cavity in the middle of the 3rd hole, and if you have an hour to kill, he'll explain exactly how he did it. Frank LaRosa got back on the gravy train with a birdie on 4 (which Frickie should have covered) and Steve Lozzi, split up from his regular partner Saul, got in on the act himself in a most unorthodox and unrecommended manner on 5: A dead pull left into the woods with a delayed reaction spit-out into the rough, and later a pitch-in for the 3, proving once again that there is more than one way to skin a bird!

     See you next Tuesday.

Recap Week 13

If we keep this up, we're gonna lose our distinction as Southern New England's premier golf league. We have great weather and course conditions, but we seem to be getting worse each week. (And don't start with the, "My quota is too high" excuse. The Cray Supercomputer that Bino keeps in his basement knows all.) With 48 golfers teeing it up, we had but one player exceed +2. And with 432 chances at birdie, we had only five circled numbers.

All it took to win Team was a +2 and that honor will go to Jay Chapman (+1) and the pride of Southie (and Fort Myers) Joe Curtis, who is just trying to catch up with the MacNeil money machine.

And Mike Bradley continues his mid-season surge; Sunday, Mayhem came on strong at the end to nab 3rd place in the Easton CC two-day tournament and last night turned in his best round of the year with an 81, and for league play secured Individual at +3. And for good measure, Mike took Closest to the Pin on the 4th hole at 9' 1".

For the first time all year, all birdies survived: Steve Peterson made one of his occasional appearances and made it worthwhile with a birdie on 2, Dave Weber will collect on 3, this humble hacker had a 2/1 on 6, all-round good guy Len Lima finally got on the money board with a 3 on the 8th, (actually, it was nice to see four first-time money winners this week) and the ever-steady Jared Cacciapaglia will be rewarded for a bird on 9.

Highpointer for the night was the dynamic rookie Greg Paone at 16 points. And the only other rounds of note were turned in by John Tracy and T.J. James at +2 each.

A tip of the cap goes out to another outstanding SIGL rookie, Todd Texeira. Playing in the weekend Easton tourney on Sunday, and starting the shotgun on Hole 7, Tex came to his last tee of the day and needed only one more swing, as he aced the 6th, for his second career hole-in-one. Way to go, Todd! (Surprisingly, John MacNeil was not around for a complimentary drink.)

And finally, we almost lost a good man last night, when one SIGLer rifled an errant rocket right past the head of starter Steve Romano standing on the porch. Check out the permanent dent just above the entrance. I know we've had some issues with the club, but killing or maiming employees is strictly frowned upon by the executive committee.

   See you next Tuesday.

Bumpy Ride

The cart path between 12 and 13 needs to be fixed!!!

Recap Week 12

It was looking ominous earlier in the day, but the heavy stuff didn't come down for quite a while, so all went well. But apparently dark clouds were enough to keep many scaredy cats away, so attendance was low. And as is the trend lately, most players were solidly below expectations.

Bucking that trend though were a few superior performers: Ed MacNeil will take a bow as Individual honoree at +5, Greg Willard had his best night of the year at +5 and hooked up with a hot Steve Dasaro (+3) to win Team at +8.

Not to be outdone by brother Ed, John MacNeil will claim $25 for his Closest to Pin on 2 that settled two inches from an eagle. With an outstanding read, Johnny nailed the birdie putt.

There were only nine birdies on the night, and proving once again that good clean living pays off, Steady Teddy Meyer was the sole survivor with a birdie on 3, and will humbly accept $108 in cash money. Uncompensated birds were had on 2, and as usual, 8 and 9.

Other notable rounds were carded by Paul McDermott, Ryan Burke, and Sean Costello, all at +3. Other than that, all was quiet on the Easton front.

And with the anticipation building all week, SIGLers T.J. James and Todd Texeira squared off for the Easton CC Division C match-play championship during league play last night. After a back and forth battle, Todd finally prevailed on 17 to take the crown and join Bob Frick, who previously secured the B Division title. (One hole Todd didn't win was the 8th, when he hit himself in the chest with his ball, which is hard to do even if you're a trick-shot artist.) Congrats to both, and to all SIGLers who participated.

And finally, it is nice to see that the recent "enhanced" pricing structure and strict collection methods (pay at the desk, and then pay more later) have produced the funds to begin some much appreciated cart path improvements. My lower lumbar region says, "Thank you, Easton Country Club!"
