WEEK 4 CTP:                                                             6TH

In the sixties, Bob Hope made a bad movie called If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium. Well we star in a bad movie called If It's Tuesday, The Weather Will Surely Suck. Another tough day, particularly later. But if the Red Sox could get their game in, so could we. It was a good week to be an alternate, as many of our daintier players stayed home and dry.

It could be the weather and conditions, or our general lack of skill but again scores were well below
average, even hitting from the Combination tees. There were only nine players and a handful of teams who exceeded quota.

Greg Willard got an immediate return on his investment of new Cobra King One-Length irons (all irons the same shaft length) with a league leading +5 to take Individual honors. Right behind him, Ed Leach got on the money board with an outstanding +4 to take 2nd Individual.

Greg's partner was no help, so Ed Leach (+4) and his partner, alternate Bob Loring (+1) stepped up to earn the 1st Team prize at +5. And the duo of Mark Nolan and John MacNeil had solid performances at +2 each to claim 2nd Team at +4.

Rick Walsh continues his solid play, and this week will be rewarded for his fine approach on 4 to 16'6" to take Closest to Pin cash.

Birdies have been hard to come by this year, and this week only six were posted on the front, with four surviving. This humble hacker hit only two greens in regulation, but made both of them count with birdie conversions on the 3rd and 6th. Greg Willard used his new sticks to get one close on 7 and made the birdie putt, and Mike Leonard made up for an otherwise disappointing night with a paying birdie on 8. Buddies Mark Nolan and Wayne Musgrove cancelled each other out on the 2nd hole.

As noted, not a lot of good scoring this week, so the only notables that were not in the money were TJ James and Mike Bradley at +3, and John Fay and Big Bill Doonan (who shot a stellar 78 the next day in difficult conditions) each at +2. Highpointer for the night was Greg Willard with 14.

There was limited participation in the back nine skins pool and there were only three birdies on the night. This writer continued with a hot putter and drained on bomb on 12. Mighty Ed Finn had a legit look at eagle on the 13th from just off the green, and settled for an easy bird. And the pride of Meffa, Peter Frasca, made a heck of a 2 on 16 to take a share of the pool.

Closest to Pin for Week 4 is the 6th hole.

And finally, rest in peace Bill Buckner. A fine gentleman who frequented our Easton fairways when he was the manager of the Brockton Rox a few years ago. Sadly, he will not be remembered for an outstanding major league career that spanned four decades (1969-1990), but instead only for one weak grounder that got away.

  See you next Tuesday.

WEEK 3 CTP:                                   4TH

For whatever reason, we had a bunch of no-shows Tuesday, and based on the way we played, maybe we would have been better off if we had all stayed home. Whether you played the ball up in the rough or down (more about that later) it didn't seem to matter as we were a collective 51 points below quota, with only nine individuals, and only two teams out of 28, exceeding quota. Yikes.

If you managed to eke out a plus score, you had a real good chance of winning money this week. And two out of the three top performers happened to get paired up this week, so Jay Chapman with a fine +3 and partner Gary Russell with his own +3 will take 1st Team honors at +6. The only other teams in plus territory will also cash as Mike Nolan at +2 and Greg Willard also at +2 are 2nd Team winners.

Top dog this week was Honest John Fay who turned in an outstanding +4 to take 1st Individual bragging rights. Plus 3 will take 2nd Individual, and Gary Russell's bogey on 1 will decide a card-off over Mayhem Bradley's and Jay Chapman's +3.

John MacNeil jumped on the money train with a stellar approach shot to 4'5" on the 3rd Hole to capture the Closest to Pin award.

With 46 guys having nine shots at it each, there were only four birdies on the night. Johnny Mac naturally sunk his birdie putt on 3 but was smashed by John Hrenko. That will leave a fine birdie on 6 by Jim Shannon and big-hitter Greg Willard's 4 on 9 as the winning
birds, taking home $55 each.

The back nine was equally stingy in the birdie department, with only three made, and all will pay. Mike McNeice made up for a lackluster front side with winning birds on 10 and 12, and steady Bob Loring made an impressive 3 on the difficult 15th.

There were not a lot of notables aside from those winning money. The only other plus quota players on the entire roster were Mike Bradley at +3 and Rick Walsh and rookie Ned Babyak at +1. Highpointer was Gary Russell at 13.

And finally, SIGL management has to apologize for a late decision (10:00 AM) to play the ball up everywhere instead of just the fairway. Although the decision was sound, we forgot that there are now a couple of groups that go out really early, so they played
the ball down in the rough instead. (For the record, their scores were no worse than those who played it up everywhere.) Most of the time, late is better than never, but this was a case of late is worse than never. For the rest of the season, the ball may be played up (preferred lie) ONLY in the fairway of the hole being played. You may not touch the ball in the rough unless it is in casual water or is embedded in its own pitchmark.

  See you next Tuesday.

   WK 2 CTP:       3RD HOLE

Well, we held off starting the season for as long as we could, but it was still sloppy out there, although nothing compared to a couple of weeks ago. Playing from the Combination tees has met with widespread approval, although it didn't do much for our scores, as only 16 out 51 entrants exceeded quota.

But we did have a handful of players who were in midseason form. Easy Ed Finn came out of the gate in fine fashion with a birdie, 17 points, and a +6 performance. After a double bogey on 1, he was even par for the rest of the front. His partner Steve Danieli contributed a fine +3 himself, and they will take 1st Team honors at +9. Dan Svirsky shook off some tough early season rounds with an outstanding +5, and his mate Mayhem Mike (Bradley) threw in a +1 to secure 2nd Team at +6.

Veteran SIGLer Terry Thompson kicked off the season as a new Easton CC member along with playing partner and friend Jim Shannon in good form with a superb +6 to earn the 1st Individual prize. His bogey on 1 was good enough to win a card-off with Ed Finn, who will take the 2nd Individual cash.

Steve Lozzi and Company were the first SIGLers on the course and Steve promptly set the standard for Closest to Pin on the 2nd hole with a nifty approach to 8 feet. It survived for a long time, until Mr. Rich White came along and stuck one to 2'4" to earn the prize.

Although the greens had been aerated and were otherwise pretty rough (TJ described the ball bouncing its way to the hole like playing plinko), somehow we had a respectable 14 birdies on the
front side, with four paying cash money. Billy Doonan came out like gangbusters and promptly birdied the first hole to take a quarter of the pot ($28). Rich White sunk his two-footer on 2, and for good measure, added another on 4. Right before teeing off, Rich paid his first half dues, and after four holes on day one, had earned back the whole thing, plus some. RAW talent. Birdies on 3 (Svirsky, Thompson, Loring, Lozzi), 6 (Danieli, Hrenko), and 9 (Leach, Simmons, Svirsky, J. MacNeil) did not survive.

The back nine skins pool yielded only three birds, and two were smashed on 13 by Rich White and Mike Leonard. So that leaves Steve Danieli taking the whole $106 with his score of 3 on the 12th hole.

Players who had a good night but did not share in any cash prizes include Steve Lozzi and Ed Leach at +3, and Ted Meyer, Paul Raynard, Bill Simmons, and Peter Frasca, all at +2. Ed Finn takes Highpointer honors with 17.

A hearty SIGL welcome goes out to newcomers Bill Simmons and Ned Babyak. If you need to know how things work, just ask
Sully, (who will ask somebody else.)

And finally, there were way too many SIGL members who played Tuesday but did not pay their first half dues. Anyone who played Tuesday but did not pay will not be eligible for any competition or prize money next week, unless a check accompanies your scorecard in the cigar box. No excuses, not matter how "creative" (translation: bullshit) will be accepted.

  See you next Tuesday.
