Larosa and Lyons battle it out for the money lead

Final Recap

There were many a Nervous Nellie who woke up Sunday morning and thought we wouldn't be playing golf that day, but as that great American, Alfred E. Neuman would say "What, me worry?" And sure enough, right on schedule, at 11:12 the rain stopped, the skies cleared and we had ourselves a beautiful day, and with no hitches, bitches, or glitches, to boot.

Apparently, though, the Easton grounds crew was anticipating Colorado-like flooding, and consequently proceeded to place the pins on the highest ground of each hole, some barely on the green. With the greens remarkably dried out, this resulted in a day of treacherous putting. But as all the golf world knows, there is no challenge too great for the vaunted S.I.G.L., and so we brought mighty Easton to its knees. ...Well, not really. Actually, many a quota point was squandered away by the three putt, and one 19th hole lamentation was heard of a birdie opportunity turned into a double bogey by the never-welcome four putt. The way to avoid three-putting was to sink the first one, which was done 20 times by 12 different golfers.

Whether it was the greens or not, collectively, we did not play well, with only six players exceeding quota and four more at even, and only two teams in the plus column. Even sending out a Gurney Group scouting party in the morning didn't help; the sum total of their recon briefing: There's a lot of tough pins out there.

However, as in years past, the perennial tourney all stars rose to the top and were handsomely rewarded for their efforts. Frank LaRosa again was our featured golfer of the day when the 69 year-old shot one stroke higher than his age on the back of five birdies for an unbeatable 42 points and a boat-load of dough ($450). Last year, Frank had 46 points in the tourney, so that is an amazing combined 88 points in 36 holes when the money is on the line. And again, Jim Lyons saved his best round of the year for the year-end, and came in with 34 points with four birds, also putting him in the upper-income bracket ($441). And rookie Dave Weber, who played well all year but modestly held back from winning much money, was really cooking with (Mutual) gas as he carded 29 points, easily outdistancing any other B player and making up for lost time in the cash department ($433).

Dana Willard played well and was rewarded with $246.50. As usual, Tommy James came to play, and registered an impressive 33 points to captain the winning team of James, Dave Weber, Paul Begley, and Dana Willard. T.J. needed a little pocket money for a golf trip to Maine, so he turned it on and headed north with an extra 193 clams (dollars) in his wallet. (Bob Frick, going on the same trip, turned it on for an extra $9. "Hey T, ya got a couple of bucks I can borrow?" Actually, Bob played very well but didn't have the right teammates.)  Greg Willard and Scott played well and came in at +1, which was best in class in the C and D division.

We gave out a total of $2,830 in cash prizes and $300 in raffle prizes. The cash prizes consisted of $1,950 in team and individual payouts, and there was a total of $880 in the birdie pools: $180 in the pay-all pool and $700 in the skins pool. There were 20 pay-alls worth $9 each, and five skins birdies that paid $140 each, and were won by Frank LaRosa (2), Jim Lyons (2), and Dave Weber (1). Of 39 golfers who played, 26 won some cash or a raffle prize, with 10 players winning $100 or more. And thanks go out to Frank for providing three nice golf shirts as prizes. And for the first time ever, thanks in some part to the cancellation of Week 20, we were able to pay all tourney costs; greens fee, cart, lunch, and dinner. What a country!

Well, another year is now in the books, and we hope everyone had fun. As always a hearty round of applause to co-captain and good friend Bino Bino Carrabino who superbly handled the website and a lot of the number crunching, in addition to being the king of the photo caption. (Go back to previous years on the website; they're still funny as hell.)

We hope all are willing and able to do it all again in '14.

See you next Tuesday,... I mean April.

Recap Week 19

Well, another regular season has come to a close all too soon, and we had a surprisingly low turnout for the final night. (Resting up for the year-end?)

Again, most scores were nothing to write home about, but a few players finished the year on a high note; Larry Anshewitz came on strong in the closing weeks and finished by winning Individual with +3 and birdies on his two final holes of the year. And despite a real lack of play this year, Mike McNeice just dusts the clubs off, and with barely a practice swing, shoots 38/79 with two frontside birds to capture Team honors (+3) along with Dan Szczurko (E). Larry and Mike were highpointers with 18.

Jim Lyons, who had a career day for last year's tourney, had a nice tune-up for this Sunday when he grabbed the final CTP of the year with an approach to 8' on 8 and threw in a birdie to boot.

There were a total of nine birdies on the night, five of which lived: Mike McNeice on 2 and 6, Joe Curtis on 3, Jim Lyons on 7 and Larry Anshewitz on 9. Covered birds were on 4 (Szczurko, Barry) and 8 (Anshewitz, Bradley).

The regular-season money winner turned out to be Ed MacNeil, who had a $100 birdie last week, to finish with a total of $260, followed by Co-Rookies of the Year Larry Anshewitz ($230) and Steve Lozzi  ($205). Congrats, boys. In all, of 54 golfers who played all or part of the year, 49 won something. And there is still plenty of dough up for grabs.

The Sam Solari Memorial year-end tourney is this Sunday, 9/22 with the first tee time at 11:12. We will be going off the front and back. For newcomers, here's the drill:

Sign in at the desk. (Greens fees and carts are paid for.) Check the posting on the porch for your tee time and group. Hook up with your group. Pay Frank La Rosa for optional birdies ($20 and $5), Grab a box lunch and drink, ONE PER CUSTOMER, in the clubhouse, be at the tee on time, keep an accurate tally of your quota points, play well, win money.

In addition to league funds providing for the cost of greens fees, carts, lunch and dinner, there will be prize money of $1,850, which consists of team, individual gross and net for each class, CTP for each Par 3, and Longest Drive and Senior (60 years and +) Longest Drive on Hole 18. In addition, there should be about $900 - $1,000 in the birdie pools, and there will be some fine raffle prizes.

     Good luck to all.

Recap Week 18

I’m just back from Myrtle Beach or as I like to call it Mecca where alligators like to watch you tee off which helps keep up the pace of play. Our good friend Dave Peters knows all about gators as I heard he has a couple in his backyard. Feeling good about my game and thinking about the $200 up for grabs in the birdie pool turned into a disaster. It’s like playing in a scramble when you don’t play your game and just try to hit it as far as you can “come back little Sheba” and when you do get on the green in regulation your telling yourself don’t leave the birdie putt short and of course it goes by the hole and turns birdie into bogie. The league is all about birdies and the 2 members that are sharing the pot are Ed MacNeil(6) and John Tracy (8) each collect $100. Tough luck losers were TJ and B.Willard who knocked each other out on 2 and John Fay...John MacNeil (4). The 6 birdies were all the league could conjure up. Steve Lozzi takes the CTP on 6 with 17’9”.
Ed Finn showed up only to find out the rest of his group didn’t, but played with the MacNeil brothers both have that Irish whisper going for them. Ed jumps to the top of the money leader board.
I was ready to go in the clubhouse when the Williard brothers looked stunned and confused and I told them I’d take there scorecard. I had to pry it out of his hands only to find out that Blake had his round of the year and wanted to frame the card. Blake takes home top and team honors with his 17pts and good for +6. Dwayne Snell tagged along for the ride and also collected.
Those of you looking for a beverage including the empty shack on 2 were out of luck. The shack is there just for show. I saw a cat fight in the bar area between Rosie, Andrea and the snack girl…”my money was on Andrea by the way” on who should go out and quench the thirst of the SIGL’ers. There were no winners Rosie went to the parking lot and smoked a pack of cigarettes, the snack girl went home, which left Andrea to tend bar.
The list was up on the post to sign if you are not playing in the year end and just 3 players signed it. Next week is the last week of the season with the tourney on Sunday the 22nd @11:00. There’s lots of cash to be had. They’ll be 2 birdie pools one where all birdies pay and the other knockout pool.

See y'all next Tuesday
