The Look

This was the look of Hartnett and Bino after the 6th hole.

Recap Round 2

Finn & Bamford pummeled Hartnett & Bino.
Bamford carried this team with a par net birdie on 1 and a birdie net eagle on 2, this guy hits his tee shot on 2 and starts yelling oh no got under it, ya right, it's only over the hill in the middle of the fairway and puts his second shot on the green for an easy two putt birdie. Finn, feeling left out birdies 3. Hartnett and Bino staggered to the 4th hole down 3 needing to make birdies not pars to stay in the match, it was not to be as Bamford had his best round and with Finn there to chip in a ho hum 18 points of his own, this duo have visions of going all the way.

McKenna & Walsh def Karas & Gallagher.
Walsh continues to show his championship experience by holding down the fort and taking advantage of his stroke holes by parring 1 & 6, while Gallagher keeps his team in it with steady play and only one down going into 8. Karas had an off day and to advance you have to have your A game. McKenna looks to Walsh and says I'll take it from here and birdies 8 and 9 to take on the red hot Finn and Bamford.

Freedman & Poverman def MacNeil & Dillon.
Poverman loving life with gettings shots on every hole with a bonus of 2 shots on 1. He doubles the hole net par to put his team 1 up. He totaled 5 pars (net birdie) for the round on a day when Freedman was a little off. This match was even after 6, but with MacNeil and Dillon both doubling the 7th to go 1 down, this duo could not recover and are left with what could have been a major upset, on the outside looking in.

Outside the tournament, Dave Johnson shoots 1 under to take top individual and team honors.

Recap Round 1

1
McKenna & Walsh def J.MacNeil & Jurgilewicz 2 up
Walsh with a par on the easy 3rd hole put them up 1 and McKenna parred the 4th to go 2up. MacNeil picked a fine time to have his worst round of the year and they were no match for this duo.

2
Karas & Gallagher def Barry 2&1

Barry was left to play alone but as I have said before he is our fearless leader. Barry went 1 up with a par on 4, but that was quickly erased when Karas parred the 5th after halving the 6th Gallagher with a stroke on 7 had a 5 net 4 to go 1 up. Karas ended it on the 8th with a birdie. Barry gave it his all and shot a 78 for the day, but 2 against 1 is never an easy task.

3

E.MacNeil & Dillon def Lyons & Berke 3 & 2

Lyons & Berke got slapped around for the first 4 holes and were down 3 as they staggered to the 6th MacNeil put the lights out with a birdie. Lyons was looking for a divorce as this marriage was short lived.

4

Hartnett & Bino def Murphy & Jaffe 1 up

This match could have been a lot worse if not for Murphy using his championship experience to hang tough. The match was 2 up going to the 7th and all I was thinking was 5 net 4 with everyone getting a shot off Hartnett, but I failed to make the 5 and left the door open. Hartnett carried this team as he continues to fire on all cylinders. The ninth started out with Murphy and myself driving it to the sandtrap and Hartnett scraping the tree on the right to make it a 3 shot hole. He hits it to the left rough with 172 left to the pin. Murph and myself hit to easy chips to the green, Hartnett out of the rough leaves it 8' to the right of the pin. It's up to Murph to sink the 15' birdie putt to extend the match, he missed and that's all she wrote. Murph is suing Jaffe for non support.

5

Freedman & Poverman def Larosa & Larosa 1 up

This match was close all the way with Dave Larosa taking the 1st hole with a 4 net 3, but it was quickly erased when Poverman gets a natural birdie on 2 for a 4 net 3. Freeman drives the 3rd hole for an easy 2 putt birdie to go 1 up. It stayed that way until the Larosa's would look to get even on 6, but a chip in birdie for Freedman dashed those hopes. Frank Larosa getting a stroke on 7 for the 1st time in league play takes advantage and pars the hole to even the match. The power hitting Freedman drives the 8th pin high but in the trap. He gets it up and down for birdie, but Dave Larosa comes through with a birdie of his own. All even going to 9, Freedman again drives a bomb and has an iron to the green puts it on and an easy 2 putt birdie (his 4th of the day) left it up to Dave Larosa to par the hole getting a stroke to extend the match, but his second shot went to the right into the trees and could not scramble for par. Poverman played a steady round and was feeling good about getting a shot a hole. Next week it's more of the same.

6

Finn & Bamford def McNeice & Thompson 1up

This was the match of the day as it took 13 holes to decide the winner. It didn't start too good for Finn & Bamford quickly going 2 down after 2, the turning point came on the 6th where Bamford hits his tee shot to 2'5" of the cup for a birdie. It was then Finn and McNeice taking over to battle it out where they come to the 9th all even. Finn playing well all year birdies the 9th, but McNeice not to be outdone also birdies it and off the 10th they go. I havn't mentioned Thompson yet for good reason. He was a non factor, but it didn't matter to McNeice he was in the zone matching Finn shot for shot. Bamford hit his tee shot on 12 to the right of the sand trap but a tree was right in front of him. He went for the miracle shot, but instead a wooshing sound was heard as he broke his 7 iron hitting the tree on the follow through, Finn was there to halve the hole. Bamford not needing the 7 iron on th 13th pars the hole getting a stroke to end this long battle.

Recap

The matches get under way for the Cup and Hartnett is heating up shooting a 79 for his best round of the year. He still has a bitter taste left from last years finals as the weight of his partner was to much to carry. We have banished last years partner and I will step in to try and help him reach the promise land. The competition is stiff this time around as we have many players who have championship experience and new players who can downright hit the ball a mile. Winning will be tough without your A game.
The format is match play and I have put the number of strokes people are getting next to their names. Please don't forget to put your point totals as you usually do for the round and make it clear who won the match. If matches are tied after 9 go to the 10th and continue until there is a winner. Look on the scorecard for the handicap holes.
Poverman gets a stroke a hole as he's paired with Freedman the new young gun who when he plays usually collects money. They are going against the Larosa's who are hoping brother love will help them take down this giant.
I'll comment on each match in next weeks recap.

Toughest holes are in this order
1,7,5,6,2,3,9,4 and 8

Recap

This is the first time since I've been keeping track that the top player in the league has won back to back individual honors. Congratulations to Rich McKenna as he cleaned up with the hat trick of individual, team, and birdie money to move up to 3rd spot on the money board. The other notables for the week are Peter Jaffe, if McKenna had not sunk the eagle putt would have been top dog, Gerry Berke and Jim Lyons all were +3 or better over their quotas. The tournament pairings have been posted and a misprint on the start date has been corrected to 7/22/08. This is match play with weekly prizes still in effect, so don't pick up unless it's for double bogey.
I will post the pairings with the number of shots each person is getting in parenthesis next to their name next week. We are playing 80% handicap.
The British Open they covet the Claret Jug, but nothing compares to the Judge Smails Cup. I will dig out the past Champions and post them next week.

Recap

The league was finally able to get in a round without rain as we hit the half way point in the season. I think I'll have a talk with the course about making Easton Freedman & McKenna proof, these guys are making it look easy. Rich takes it under par with a double Bogey and 3 birdies and Freedman comes back from his hiatus or was it Q school to make 3 birdies of his own. Finn enjoyed the top of the money board for one week, but still continues to play solid. Thompson is having his best year and I think it's because he got rid of the stiffs that he was playing with, dragging his game down. Walsh shot his best round with an 84 and cleaned up by taking the majority of skins from his group. The shot of the day goes to Lyons, while playing the back nine he hits his tee shot on 17 into the 2nd fairway, with the option of getting back to the fairway or go over the trees, he chooses the trees and somehow puts in on the green, then sinks a 30 footer for birdie. WOW!!!
The midyear is coming and I'll post the details on a separate page.
League fees are due next week, so see Larry of Bino, total of $260 payable to SIGL or we do take cash. This is for non-members of Easton.
