Recap Year End

The year end is where you can make a lot of cash and cashing in big time was Frank Larosa who shot an incredible round of even par and collected 1st place money and tally that with birdie, closest to the pin and individual totaled $370 and a run away winner of this years top money leader. Ed Finn had a great round also, shooting 75 and he came in 2nd collecting $220 for the day and what looked liked every other envelope was going his way. Rich McKenna needed the most points needing to get 37 of them and he did. The MacNeil brothers both had good days with +6 over their quota points, as for the rest of us a few were close or just over what they needed, but for the most part we stunk. The course as usual was in great shape with lightning fast greens, which caused many a 3 putt if you were on the wrong side of the hole.
I enjoyed meeting all the new members and want to thank all that contributed to the gift given to Larry and myself. I'd like to also thank our friendly neighborhood bartender OBO for keeping the 19th hole open when most would have thrown us out. The dreaded winter months are ahead and the count down begins until we tee it up in April for the 2011 SIGL season. LB will conjure up the newsletter sometime in March letting you know when the official start date is. Please let us know if you are not playing.
Tick Tock....Tick Tock.....See you all next year.

Please be on time for your tee time. Sometimes, they run ahead of schedule so be there early. Unlike previous years, we are not going to reshuffle groups in order to accommodate late comers. (Pulling into the parking lot at 11:14 for an 11:16 tee time is not on time.)

If your name is listed above, and you are not playing, you must let us know now, or we will have to pay for you. Excused absences: 1) Untimely death, 2) Loss of limb that would prevent you from swinging a golf club. Other than that, all no-shows will be billed. Call me at 508-742-5355 (Larry) if you can't play.

All regular-season rules apply. Preferred lie in your own fairway. Relief, including line of sight relief, for driving range and fence.

All putts that are for a quota point must be holed. Protect the field.

Newcomers: The team you are playing with is not your scoring team. The list of scoring teams is currently buried in a hermetically-sealed Funk and Wagnalls jar in my backyard, and will be unearthed on game day. When you finish your round, the scoring teams will be posted in the clubhouse.

Good luck to all.

Recap Week 19

The 19th week featured our 1st eagle of the year and it came on the 9th hole by one of our Judge Smails Cup champions. Fitzpatrick stepped to the 9th hole saying I need an eagle to make my quota and with the wind at his back tees off lands his ball just in the rough just short of the left trap, he then takes out an ill-advised 3 wood from the deep rough only to dribble it out onto the fairway, leaving him 160 out. Miracles do happen and it came when he took out his 6 iron and he fades it in to the front pin location, it hits softly and with the words of Bill Murry ringing it's in the hole the eagle was landed for a much needed 8 points. Elsewhere, McKenna plays like a mere mortal on the front with his lowest total of the year and still manages to break 80. Lyons was drowning his sorrows at the bar as the high school kids again took over the tee, only to be rescued by his playing partners who showed up early and raced to play the back first and just beat darkness by finishing the front before the sun set. Mercado comes into the clubhouse with a +5 and tells LB that this will win top honors for the week, LB says we'll see when all the cards are turned in, Mercado says in his non threatening way, no this will win this week. The threat worked for top and team honors. There is good news on the tournament front, there are no new changes. Playing partners to be posted next week.

Recap Week 18

The calendar reads it's September and with that kids go back to school which in turn creates havoc with the SIGL having to deal with the high school kids taking our tee times. I sit there and watch stiff after stiff step up and take mighty practice swings only to dribble it off the tee or shank it sideways. This was not a good day as the temperature was reading in the high 90's. The back nine was not an option as Easton was top dressing the greens and was not playable. Thanks Mark Lombardi! I don't usual drink on the course but with my playing partners having a contest on who could drink the most I found myself joining them. The cart girl was not far off and was told to stay close. Murphy was seen heading to the packy but before doing so he wrestled in the parking lot to take off his sweaty shirt to put a dry one on. The birdie pool been vedy vedy good to Barry lately as he took down the whole pot 2 weeks ago and splits it this week with McKenna.
The year end tournament time has been pushed back to 11:00 using the front and back and is no longer a shot gun start. This should be the last change, but do stay tuned.

Recap Week 17

The season is winding down with 3 weeks to go. Tuesday we only had 2 people make their quotas while everone else had an off night. The humidity was stifling, but one happy camper is our fearless leader who's birdie on 5 was the only one that held to propel him up the money leader board. The year end tournament might be changed to an earlier date, the official word is not in yet and I'll post it as soon as I know. Questions have come up about quotas. I take your best scores out of the weeks that you played and average it out just like the USGA does. Example is you played 16 weeks I take your best 8 scores.
Lyons was seen with his kayak on 10 looking for his ProV1.

The finalists

Stefanick could not wait to get the cup on

Judge Smails Cup Winners

Bob Fitzpatrick and Frank Stefanick

Recap Week 16

The Judge Smails Cup had Ed Finn and Rick Walsh facing newcomer Bob Fitzgerald and 2nd year player Frank Stefanick. Walsh had championship experience, but that did not scare this duo. Stefanick was hot coming in, but on this day it was all about Fitzpatrick. Finn and Walsh had cruised into the finals playing their best golf to date. The match quickly went in favor of Stefanick and Fitzpatrick after a near eagle on 2 for Stefanick and a tap in birdie to go 2 up. Walsh and Finn get one back on 4 only to lose it on 5. Walsh gets it back to 1 after 6. Fitzpatrick pars the 7th net birdie it's back to 2. Walsh and Finn try to weather the storm, but a dagger by Fitzpatrick who sinks a birdie putt to go 3 up after 9. Finn needs something to get him going on the back 9 so a quick chug of Bud Light seemed to be the answer as he comes out smoking with a birdie on 10 and looking like Walsh and Finn would get another back on 12 with Finn in close for a birdie putt and Fitzpatrick in the trap. Fitzpatrick reaches into the goodie bag and blasts his sand trap shot out and it agonizingly trickles into the hole for an improbable birdie and now the pressure is on Finn to sink his putt and calmly does to keep he and Walsh within reach. Finn takes the 13th hole and its now down to 1. Finn is now 2 under par on the back and they step to the 14th tee. Finn and Stefanick are on but have a long putt, Fitzpatrick lands in the right trap with the ball up close to the lip. Magic strikes again as he somehow gets it close and a tap in par putting the pressure on Finn to 2 putt, he blows it by and lips the comebacker and its back to 2 down. The holes are running out, but they are now entering Amen's Corner which are arguably the toughest holes on the course. It's dormie with 2 to go. Finn pars the 17th to get it to 1. The adrenalin is pumping with Finn and Walsh both on in 2 and Stefanick and Fitzpatrick chipping up to try and save par. Stefanick chips up to 5 feet, Finn and Walsh are both in with par. Stefanick who up to this point had watched his partner carry him needed to redeem himself and with his heart pounding and depends firmly strapped around his waist, sinks the 5 foot par putt to finish off Finn who shot 35 on the back and Walsh to win the coveted Judge Smails Cup.

And speaking of match-play winners, hats off to our own Rich McKenna who recently won the Easton C.C. Match-Play Championship, in an epic final match where it took a sub-70 round to win on the final hole. (He used 14 clubs, so it was pretty easy.) Also, good luck to all SIGL/Easton C.C. members in this weekend's Club Championship.
