Like a lawn mower that's been in the shed all winter, our season got off to a sputtering start. But the weather and our game appear to be heating up, so it looks as though we're beginning to run on all cylinders.

Scores were much improved from Week 1, with 32 players meeting or exceeding quota. At the forefront was rookie Rich Harding, who had an outstanding +5 to take 1st Individual. Second goes to Jim Lyons at +3, who won a tie-breaker with TJ James.

But T still found a way onto the money list with a 1st Team win with his +3 and partner Rick Walsh's solid +1 for a +4. The Portugese National team of Lou Silva (+2) and Scott Silvia (+2) lost the tie-breaker on hole 5, and will settle for 2nd Team honors. Individual winner Rich Harding was well positioned to take the Team prize, but like the final card you draw in a poker hand, his partner was no help.

It looked like the pride of Everett, Steve Lozzi, was going to take Closest honors on the 4th hole, but the last last player of the night to tee it up, the aforementioned Mr. Silva, striped one in to 6' 6" to snatch the dough out of Steve's waiting hand.

We had a modest seven birdies for the night, but the shot of all shots was off the stick of the genial Terry Thompson on the 8th hole. After placing a drive 80 yards out, Terry cooly deposited his next shot into the hole for an eagle 2. Well done TT!

This humble hacker salvaged something out of an otherwise miserable night with a tap-in birdie skin  on 2. The always steady Greg Paone jumped onto the money list his playing partner Silva with a skin on 3, and rookie Ed Leach is already showing up his sponsor Mike Bradley with a crisp birdie on the difficult 5th hole. With T Thompson's eagle on 8, Greg Willard's birdie was for naught, and 9 was covered by G. Willard, TJ, and Jim Shannon.

Highpointer for the night was Terry Thompson with 15. The only other notables were Steve DaSaro and Johnny Fay, both at +2. With only two weeks played, we already have 19 players on the money list.

A belated welcome aboard to the passel of newcomers: Dan McGarry, Steve Danieli, Martin Enright, Ed Reagan, Peter Frasca, Bob Jones, Rich White, Rich Harding, Pat Heffernan, Sean Knowles, and Ed Leach, And welcome back to Bino, Mike Nolan, and Greg Paone.

And finally, for those of us who are still suffering from early-season swing sickness, don't forget to make an appointment with Dr. Rob Citrano, who guarantees to cure what ails you.

  See you next Tuesday.

YEAH, BUT ROB, WHY DO I HAVE TO WEAR A JOHNNY?

So let's just go with the "It's still early" excuse to account for our substandard first night performance. Out of 56 golfers who teed it up (out of a roster of 64), there were but eight who exceeded their quota. Optional excuses include 1) It was too cold out, 2) The rough was too high, and 3) It was that time of the month.

So almost everyone who exceeded quota won some dough. Leading the pack was Brian Murphy, who barely swung a club all winter, but exploded out of the gate with a +6 on the back of 2 birdies. For the first time, we will now pay second place for both Team and Individual. Rookie Martin Enright kicked off his SIGL career with a snappy +5 to take second place. With Mr. Enright hailing from the Emerald Isle and affable Terry Moore from Merry Ole England, SIGL is adding some international flavor.

We had a tie for Team at +6 between Ryan Burke/Dan Szczurko and Brian Murphy/John Hrenko, with Ryan and Dan winning in a card-off. Bill Doonan continues his winning ways from last year with a crisp approach on 2 to 5'9" to take Closest to Pin. (Bill, don't feel bad about missing the putt because it would not have lived ayway, but Murphy says thanks.)

We had the rare birdie skins straight with winners on holes 2,3,4,5,and 6 by Brian Murphy, Easy Ed MacNeil, Lucky Lenny Lima, Ryan Trigger Burke, and the great Bobby Jones. The 9th hole was thoroughly covered.

Highpointer for the night was Brian Murphy with 15. And aside from golfers already mentioned above, the only other notable was rookie Dan McGarry at +2.

Housekeeping: 1) Make sure you sign in before playing, 2) Include last names on cards. With 64 players, we have a lot of Toms, Dicks, and Harrys so to speak, and it gets confusing, 3) Print names and numbers on the card clearly. Some cards are almost unreadable, 4) To whom it may concern: Bring payment next Tuesday.

Okay, let's turn it around next week, if only so there won't be so much 19th hole bitching and moaning.

  See you next Tuesday.

                                                   THERE'S NO CRYING IN GOLF!
