Recap Week 5

Well, we're at the quarter pole of the season, and the weather has yet to break. Another cold and miserable Tuesday, feeling more like late November than late May. The next time someone says, "Yeah, but I love the change of seasons in New England" I'm gonna take off my two sweaters and rain parka and strangle him with one of them.

Scores this week were all over the lot, with plenty of impressive rounds but also many that were less than stellar. Those who scored well must have been hitting fairways and greens because the rough, especially up around the green, has been especially punitive lately. Breaking out this week was rookie Sean Costello who had a 37 with three birdies, good for a fantastic 23 points and ....oops, sorry, that was on the back nine. Sean, sorry, you were two weeks late, but that was one impressive nine holes, nonetheless. Unfortunately, Sean's front side performance didn't even earn the big guy enough cash for a post-round Irish coffee, extra whipped cream, please.

Starting his comeback from various ailments and injuries, Frank La Rosa is back in the spotlight as Individual winner at +5 and high-pointer with 16. John Tracy was solid at +2 and picked the right dance partner in Fast Frank to snag the Team win at +7. Other notable rounds were carded by neighbors Mike Kelly and Ed Burke, and also Greg Willard at +4, and by Brian Murphy, Paul Begley, Dana Willard, and partners in crime Joe Curtis and Alex Turchette at +3.

Ed Finn was looking good for Closest to the Pin on the 8th hole at 9' 11", but Eric Aronson came along and laced one in four inches closer to snatch the cash from Ed's grasp. I hope you noticed (how could you not?) the new Closest to the Pin marker on 8, care of Frank La Rosa. I'm not saying it's a bit oversized, but for the rest of the summer, on Tuesdays pilots will be able to use it as a visual mark on their approach into Logan.

We had an uninspiring seven birdies on the night, with only two surviving. Again, it is the upstart rookies who seem to schooling us veterans, and this week Jared Cacciapaglia continues his torrid and profitable pace with a birdie on the 3rd hole and it is nice to see Ed Burke get on the money board with a bird on 6. Birdies that did not live were on 4 (Bino, Tracy, and Walsh) and 9 (McNeice and D. Willard).

Misc.: Unclaimed property department: Steve Peterson you've got mail, and it's getting stale. Also, the year-end tourney on Sunday, September 28th will an 8:00 AM shotgun start, instead of our traditional 11:00 AM time.

Comings and Goings: Although he's been seen on TV and on billboards, the in the flesh version of our favorite car man, Jim Egan has not been seen or heard from all year. We're now happy to report that our milk carton campaign has paid dividends, and the Mustached One is now back in the SIGL fold.

Fed up with this charming New England change of season (bad, badder, baddest) weather, Easy Mike McNeice is heading south to beautiful Aruba for some well-deserved R&R.Next Tuesday, though, Mike has promised to phone in his score from one of the courses on the island, which, by sheer coincidence, bills itself as Southern Caribbean's premier wedding and golf destination.

And, after a distinguished career working in children's clothes, which always set him apart from the guys wearing business suits, recently retired Bob Loring is now playing so much golf that he has apparently injured himself. He gamely showed up at the course, but was unable to answer the bell. Be careful Steve Lozzi or you will be next.

And finally, another late scratch was newcomer Ryan Burke, who after a wild weekend of debauchery in Las Vegas, (this might not be true, but rumor has it that Ryan and his buddies actually stole Mike Tyson's tiger, and don't even remember doing it!), has been sidelined with a case of "food poisoning." Good one, Ryan; I used to use that one all the time myself.
   See you next Tuesday.

Recap Week 4

Well, it finally happened; a great day to play golf. And for those of us who have tried to play some winter and spring golf, it has been about the only truly nice day to play since last October, and sadly, that's no joke.

Fine weather, fine course conditions, and a few weeks of golf under our belt, and the results showed, with many players well above quota. Breaking out of his slumber, and leading the pack was Ed Finn, who carded an impressive 18 points, good for a +8 and Individual honors. With that, Easy Eddie and Steady Teddy (Meyer) easily snagged the Team win at +9.

Other notable rounds were turned in by Mike McNeice and Paul Begley (+4 each) and Ed Burke, Mark Spears, Ed MacNeil, and Todd Texeira, all at +3.

Todd looked like he had Closest to the Pin on the tough 6th hole all sewn up when he laced one in there to 10'4". But playing in the same group, publicity hound Greg Paone was having none of that, and promptly dropped one in at 10'2". Todd was so mad that he purposely missed his birdie attempt just so Greg wouldn't have the salt in the wound satisfaction of covering him. (Tex, that's called cutting off your nose to spite your face.) Greg sunk the putt. Apologies to the early groups for the stick not being out. We're not gonna mention any names, but somebody (he used to play with the Shondells) went out so early he forgot to bring it with him.

We had a respectable nine birdies on the night, five of which lived, good for $22 each. Ed Finn missed an eagle chip-in by inches on 2 giving him a kick-in birdie. (On 16, his birdie chip found the cup.) Dawn Weber continues her impressive play and for the second week in a row will collect birdie, this one on 3. Grizzled veteran Johnny MacNeil, apparently over his horrible armoire accident, continues to keep the Young Turks at bay by remaining atop the leader board with a bird on 4. Bob Frick (Frickie to his friends) carded an impressive 78 for the night and a birdie on the 5th, and Greg Paone's birdie on 6 also survived. Birdies that did not live include the 8th hole (Finn and Tracy) and 9 (Paone and Cacciapaglia).

Greg and Cacci are battling it out for Rookie of the Years honors and that coveted new car. We haven't quite figured out how we're gonna pay for the car yet, but, yep you guessed it, Frank La Rosa knows a guy who knows a guy, who when he gets out on parole in a few weeks, can hook us up with one for practically nothing.

Well, it's back to the drawing board for poor Mike Bradley. Taking a golf lesson moments before teeing off in league play (is that legal?), Mike was pumped and jacked that he had found his game. But with 27 swing thoughts going through his head, information overload set in, and he promptly went out and posted his worst round of the year. Informed of the disappointing results, Easton C.C. golf pro Rob Citrano has now officially classified Mayhem Mike as a "project." (Rob, think Charles Barkley.)

And finally, welcome back home to Dr. (well, dentist really) Saul Payne after a recent vacation in Spain. Death in the Afternoon is a classic tale about Spanish bullfighting, but Saul's story, (Almost) Death in the Afternoon, is about an angry crowd at a restaurant that practically strung him up after he asked the bartender to change the Real Madrid soccer game to something more interesting. Saul, a little piece of advice for future trips abroad: When in Seville, do as the Civilians do.

   See you next Tuesday.

Recap Week 3

The weather gods teased us with gorgeous weather Sunday and Monday, but when Tuesday is here, it is no longer clear.

Although the weather was not so hot, many SIGLers were, and we had some impressive outings. Leading the hit parade this week is Jared Cacciapaglia who had a career round, with two birdies, and 18 points to take Individual at +10. (Don't worry, he's going way up.) If Jared gets this much press all year, to save ink and time, we're gonna have to come up with a Cacci nickname for him. Playing his first SIGL round of his career, Sean Costello chose his partner well, and rode on Cacci's (his new nickname) coattails to take Team honors at +10.

Other notable rounds include Paul Begey (+6), Rick Walsh (+5), and Bill Pope and Mike Kelly at +4 each.

So far this year, it has been the rookies who have taken the lion's share of the cash, and Greg Paone continues that trend with a CTP win on the 4th hole at 9 feet. He dropped the putt in the jar, but his birdie did not live long.
With the greens having recovered from last week's aeration assault, there were 12 birdie putts that found the bottom of the hole, four of which lived. Steve Peterson continues his birdie habit with one right out of the box, those whacky MacNeil brothers snagged half the birdie pool with John on 3 and Ed on 8, and Dawn Weber put together two nice shots, to give herself a 10-foot chance, which she coolly drained to earn birdie money on 7. And as has happened so many times in the past, Dawn was also top point-getter in the women's division. Birdies that did not survive were had on 2, 4, and 9.

Speaking of birds, Rick Walsh got one and just missed another; on the 10th hole, Rick's drive was a low hard stinger that just missed decapitating a clueless Canada goose, and on his second time playing the first hole (Rick and Ed Finn got their money's worth by playing 27 holes) his tee shot winged some sort of air-borne creature. Rick didn't happen to have his Field Guide to North American Birds with him, but he was pretty sure it was either a yellow-browed bunting or the rare (now rarer) bristle-thighed curlew.

Welcome aboard to fashionably late newcomer Henry Alves, who began his SIGL career with an impressive 17 points, which along with $4.00, will get him a beer (domestic) from the cartgirl, not including tip. We have no fear though that with his solid game, and under the tutelage of swing coach Lenny Lima, Henry will be bounding up the money leader board in no time.

It pays to be an alternate. In two out of the three weeks, the Team winners have included an alternate. (For newcomers, if you are one of the four alternates picked each week, you are playing for your original team and also on an additional team or teams to fill-in for no-shows.) So any and all cash contributions to the secret Pick Me as an Alternate slush fund will not go unnoticed.

And finally, we are happy to report that Scott Silvia has found his wallet, and with pro bono help from the firm of Nolan, Aronson, and Tracy, LLP., Teddy Meyer has been fully exonerated of all charges.

   See you next Tuesday
