Recap for year end

The greens were lightning fast and the scores showed it. The weather wasn't the greatest but at least we were able to play. There was only one player to make their quota and he had to make the most points. Rich McKenna came in with a +2 and 39 points, 2 others were even for the day, Mike McNeice who found himself on two winning teams and Greg Jurgilewicz, everyone else was minus. Larry Barry was surely missed due to the death of his mother and I tried my best to fill the shoes of our fearless leader. Condolences go out the the Barry family.
I want to thank Frank Larosa and Ed Finn for helping me out and also for Frank donating some really nice prizes.
One last thanks to everyone who chipped in to give me the carry bag with the dozen golf balls tucked inside.
I had fun with the recaps and posting some pictures this year and hope nobody took offense.
The off season is here again and the countdown begins to the start on the 2009 season. Larry will send out letters in late February or early March to let you know when we do it all over again.
Have a great winter and see you next year.

Recap written by LB

Where were all youze guys? If you're a golfer, never trust the weatherman; they miss more calls than a blind umpire. By gametime, the weather was fine and some of us even got in 24 holes. Weekly winners will be posted when we get the scorecards. All winners this week and previous winners not yet paid will be paid the day of the tourney.

Anyway, that's the regular season conclusion of S.I.G.L.'s 29th year. All told, it was a good year. We added some real talent this year, and conditions at Easton were the best they've ever been. We dispersed over $2,000 in cash prizes, with almost every golfer winning something. Thanks again to Bino who does such a great job on the website and photos. And thanks to Frank LaRosa for providing some nice gifts and prizes for the Judge Smails Cup and year-end tourney.

The year-end tournament is Sunday, 10/5/08 at 11:15 AM with banquet to follow. The charge is $50 (actual cost is $76.00) which includes greens fee, cart, and banquet. The charge to Easton C.C. members and employees will be $20. There will be an optional birdie pool and also this year, an optional "poker hand" pool. (We will post an explanation later when we figure out how the hell it works.) There will be a generous amount of cash prizes and some merchandise prizes.

Playing teams, individual quotas, and tee times will be posted soon. Please arrive early because we may be going off a little earlier than posted times. Scoring teams will be put in a hermetically-sealed jar and buried in my back yard until tourney day. (For you newcomers, the team you play with is not your scoring team.)

If you are not going to be playing, you must let us know as soon as possible. Otherwise you will mess up the teams, and also cost the league for your spot. So if we don't hear from you, we'll see you on Sunday, 10/5 at Easton C.C., New England's favorite golf and wedding destination.

The Look

This is the look of some of the SIGL members on Tuesday. A Tom Tibbetts look alike!!!!
Posted by Picasa

Recap

The pain the pain as Dr Smith would say in Lost in Space. The kids were back to school which spells disaster for the SIGL members. These stiffs should not be hitting from the blue tees and the coaches should find new jobs. The league was held to a crawl with wait times that created a migraine for Brian Murphy. He could not take it anymore and walked off the course. Fast Ed MacNeil, who likes to puff on the cigar and swing away could not have been happy.
The wait did not bother F.Larosa who shot a sizzling 1 under par or Jerry Berke who shot his best round of the year and collected top honors. We have one more week to go and then it's the year end, which is Sunday 10/5/08 at 11:15 AM:
Those of you who cannot attend please let us know. The fee for the tournament TBA.

Recap written by LB

I could not make it to the course because I was at the zoo. I took some pictures. Boy has it changed since the last time I was there.

There were a alot of holes on the front greens, so we played the back for the first time this year.

Frank LaRosa charged out of the box with birds on 10,11, and 12.

With no birdies, Money Matt Freedman still finds a way to cash with a Closest to the Pin, and with two covered birds, McKenna the Machine still finds a way to get his 20 point quota. These guys are good!

Uncle Marshall blew his load on (or in) the Smails Cup, and could only muster a measly 6 points.

Peter Jaffe makes a late move from the back of the money pack to take team, individual, and a birdie.

A nice birdie by Dave Johnson on 15. (Oh sorry: Not in the pool.)

Year-end tourney is Sunday 10/05/08 11:15 AM: Cash Prizes, Merchandise Prizes, Banquet, Naked Women (well maybe not merchandise prizes).

Only 2 regular nights left: Where did the year go? Time flies when you're hacking fun.

Recap

I did not know people live vicariously through this web site. I got a call this morning wondering why it hasn't been updated from the incredible Mr Tibbetts.
This week half of the league was either on vacation or was playing in the employees tournament. Matt Freedman felt like that was taking candy from a baby, he continues his onslaught of the league funds and collects 60 more with a birdie and an eagle top individual and team honors. I have talked to Mark Lombardi about Freedman proofing the course. The committee has decided to make him putt blind folded, meanwhile Uncle Marshall golf career is complete by winning the Judge Smails Cup.
The round of the day goes to Ed Finn who was 1 shot off his personal best with a 75.
The year is quickly coming to an end with 3 weeks left. The year end tournament is just around the corner. The date is TBA.

Recap Judge Smails Cup Final

Freedman & Poverman def McKenna & Walsh 2up

This match started out with the 2 top point makers looking to just play their game and hoping that their partners could take advantage of all the strokes they were getting. The 1st hole saw Freedman hitting his tee shot to the right, but with this 2 handicapper he was able to recover to halve the hole with a par. The 2nd hole Poverman sinks a 25' no brainier to par net birdie and put his team up 1. The 3rd hole belongs to Freedman who drives the green and leaves McKenna and Walsh needing to make something happen, but Freedman 3 putts and the hole was halved. The 4th, with Freedman pissed at the 3 jack on 3 sinks his birdie putt to now take a commanding 2 up lead. McKenna & Walsh step up to the 6th still 2 down and it's now or never. Walsh with the back pin placement has flashbacks from the week before and puts his tee shot just beyond the pin and 2 putts to get to within 1. The 7th hole belonged to the man getting all the shots, Poverman gets on in 2 and par net birdies the hole to put a dagger into McKenna and Walsh. Poverman feeling good follows it up with a par net birdie on 8 and that's all she wrote.
Marshall is no longer allowed to play with his usual group, they don't want him back. I don't think there was a person on the course that did not know the outcome of this match, Marshall could not wait to tell everyone, even people not in the league.
I will need to get a picture of the winners holding the coveted cup.

Recap Semi Finals Match

McKenna & Walsh def Finn & Bamford 1 up

This match started with Ed Finn firing on all cylinders by birdieing the first and 2nd hole which you would think put his team up 2, but Rick Walsh again comes through with a birdie net eagle on 2 to get the match even. The 3rd hole was an adventure for Finn and needing his partner getting a stroke to come through with just a bogie, Bamford instead thought he was playing hockey, slapped the ball all over the green to put his team down 1. Finn on 4 makes his 3rd birdie in 4 holes to get back even. Bamford blasts his drive on 5 and things were looking good until he followed it up with a dud, meanwhile McKenna and Walsh are looking for the fire engines to hose down Finn. The hole was won by McKenna putting them up 1. The 6th hole was highlighted by Walsh just missing the stick on his tee shot leaving him a testy downhill putt. Bamford hits his shot over the green, but chips up to 3 feet. Walsh cozies his putt for an easy 3 net 2. Bamford needing his putt to halve the hole and the echo of are you kidding me tells it all. Finn getting a stroke on 7 pars the hole to get within 1. McKenna on 8 puts his 2nd shot to 4' of the cup, he studies it like a book, but just missed to give Finn and Bamford one more shot at tying it up with Bamford getting a stroke on 9. McKenna blasts his tee shot past the bunker in the center of the fairway. Walsh is just short of the trap in the short grass. Things are not looking good for Finn and Bamford and when McKenna draws a 4 wood to the edge of the green the music of turn out the lights is playing in the background. McKenna birdies the hole to end it.
McKenna and Walsh now turn their attention to the kid from Nashawtuc and am I getting a stroke on this hole Poverman.

The Look

This was the look of Hartnett and Bino after the 6th hole.
Posted by Picasa

Recap Round 2

Finn & Bamford pummeled Hartnett & Bino.
Bamford carried this team with a par net birdie on 1 and a birdie net eagle on 2, this guy hits his tee shot on 2 and starts yelling oh no got under it, ya right, it's only over the hill in the middle of the fairway and puts his second shot on the green for an easy two putt birdie. Finn, feeling left out birdies 3. Hartnett and Bino staggered to the 4th hole down 3 needing to make birdies not pars to stay in the match, it was not to be as Bamford had his best round and with Finn there to chip in a ho hum 18 points of his own, this duo have visions of going all the way.

McKenna & Walsh def Karas & Gallagher.
Walsh continues to show his championship experience by holding down the fort and taking advantage of his stroke holes by parring 1 & 6, while Gallagher keeps his team in it with steady play and only one down going into 8. Karas had an off day and to advance you have to have your A game. McKenna looks to Walsh and says I'll take it from here and birdies 8 and 9 to take on the red hot Finn and Bamford.

Freedman & Poverman def MacNeil & Dillon.
Poverman loving life with gettings shots on every hole with a bonus of 2 shots on 1. He doubles the hole net par to put his team 1 up. He totaled 5 pars (net birdie) for the round on a day when Freedman was a little off. This match was even after 6, but with MacNeil and Dillon both doubling the 7th to go 1 down, this duo could not recover and are left with what could have been a major upset, on the outside looking in.

Outside the tournament, Dave Johnson shoots 1 under to take top individual and team honors.
