WEEK 5 CTP:                                                    8TH

It looks like we're finally starting to hit our stride, with good attendance and much improved scores from the first three weeks, with 30 players meeting or exceeding quota.  (Although still only four frontside birdies.)

Terry Thompson made up for a slow start to the season with a breakout night garnering 16 points, good for a +6 and 1st Individual. And having his career best night, Red Rocketeer Chris Sullivan recorded 10 points, resulting in his own +6 and 2nd Individual. Tall Terry's bogey on 1 was good enough to win the tie-breaker.

Both of the top Individuals had partners with good nights, but it wasn't good enough to top the dynamic duo of the Brit with Grit Terry Moore at +5 and Steady Eddie Finn with a +4 who took 1st Team at +9. Joe Curtis made the most of his first appearance of the year, and of being an alternate, by
tallying his own +5 and was teamed up with the resurgent Mike Bradley, who turned in another +4, resulting in their own +9 for 2nd Team honors. Terry and Ed take first by virtue of their pars on the 1st hole.

Brian Murphy had his best night in a while, and will be rewarded for his superb tee shot on 6 that settled 5'5" from the target, good for Closest to Pin money.

Despite the many good scores, there were surprisingly only four birdies, and two will pay. The affable John Tracy will be rewarded for his skin bird on 2, and congrats to rookie Neil Babyak who will get paid for his winning birdie on 8, and who, like a business framing its first dollar, will frame his first SIGL cash and hang in his man cave. Murphy sunk his birdie putt on 6, but was smashed by
spoiler Terry Thompson.

We had 11 different golfers collect cash this week. And quite a few who had excellent nights but no reward: Eric Aronson, Steve Peterson, and Steve Mattes carded +3 each, and +2 was earned by Raynard, Spears, Leach, Szczurko, Turchette, and Lozzi. Highpointer was Terry Thompson with 16 points.

Apparently the putts were dropping a little better on the back, as seven birdies were returned with two paying. Jim Shannon made up for a poor frontside by rattling off birdies on 10, 11, and 13 and will be paid for 10. And the productive John MacNeil will have an envelope for his winning birdie on 12. Birdies on 11 (Shannon, Thompson) and 13 (Shannon, James, Eddie MacNeil) did not survive.

Housekeeping: 1) Mike Leonard pick up your envelope. 2) Two weeks in a row now (not the same group) we have had a foursome play and not turn in a card. If you do not submit a scorecard on Tuesday night then your round will not count. 3) Rookies: you can pick up winning envelopes in the cigar box on the right side of the bar. 4) Let's hope those plastic hole liners are a temporary thing because they are starting to pop up slightly on some holes, and can easily prevent a slow moving putt from dropping in the side.

And finally, pants off... I mean hats off to the Easton grounds crew for working hard to get the course in much improved shape after very trying conditions this year so far. The rough has become playable again, and the greens remain some of the best around.

  See you next Tuesday.

                                         NO, I SAID HATS OFF!
