                  WEEK 18 CTP:   2ND HOLE

Apparently, we have found our specialty, which is sinking putts on heavily aerated and sanded greens. Hard to believe, but we had an amazing season-high 19 birdies for the night, and a lot of really good scores to boot with conditions that normal golfers might find difficult; but then again, no one has ever accused SIGLers of being normal.

Rick Keating, the pride of St. Mary's of Lynn, stepped up into the limelight this week and will be rewarded handsomely for his efforts. (After Rick, the most renowned alumni of St. Mary's was the late great Tony C.)

Rick's +7 was good enough to take the Individual prize, and he also led his partner Jim Lyons (E), who was really hitting his drives well, to Team honors at +7. Rick and Jim bested Bob Loring's and Paul McDermott's +7 in a card-off (Keating birdie on 17.) However, Bob and Paul were formidable opponents, as they birdied four of the first five holes between them.

And again, Dan Svirsky just can't catch a break. A couple of weeks ago, Dan had 21 points, 3 birdies, and a +10, but came up empty. This week he striped his tee ball on 14 to 4'5", but it was still not good enough to win Closest to the Pin because he was out-Danned by Mr. Szczurko who laced a beauty to 4'2", proving once again that golf, like sex, is often a game of inches. (And to add saltpeter to the wound, he sunk the birdie putt, only to see it covered later by Paul McDermott.)

As noted, we had a season-high 19 birdies on sanded, aerated greens on holes that we play only a couple of times a year. Go figure. The only holes not birdied were the 16th with a really tough pin, and the 18th. There were 15 birdies on the first four holes (10-13) alone. But after the dust settled, again there were only two birdies that stood out, and those were Dave Naimo's on the tough 15th, and Rick Keating's on the tougher 17th hole.

Aside from the Individual and Team winners, other notables for the night were Bob Loring and Dan Szczurko at +4, and Dave Naimo, John Hrenko, Jim Shannon, Ryan Burke, Scott Silvia, Steve Anderson, and Paul McDermott, all at +3. (This humble hacker wasted a nice 37, good for 18 points by doing it on the wrong side.) Highpointer for the night was Rick Keating with 19.

And finally, time is fast approaching for those of you who will be getting into Obo's football elimination pool.  Mail your $30 entry fee to John Carrabino, 233 Algonquin Trail, Ashland, MA 01721 (made out to John) or you can pay me (LB) at the course (cash, or check made out to John.)  For those of you getting in for the first time, e-mail Bino at hightopper@gmail.com and he will set you up. Don't be shut out.

  See you next Tuesday.

WHY CAN'T WE PLAY AERATED GREENS
                                                                EVERY WEEK?
