WEEK 7 CTP: 4TH
The course is in fine crisp shape, with the greens rolling smooth, so again this week we had some pretty good golf played. Amazingly, we had five players tied at the top at +6: Steve Danieli, Len Lima, John Fay, TJ James, and Steve DaSaro. (Steve DaSaro, you reported a +5 on your card, but your accurate result was +6, so you were included in the card-off.) TJ's par on the second handicap hole (5th) earned him 1st Individual, and Lenny Lima's birdie on the 4th handicap (6th) will give him 2nd place honors.
Again, we also had a tie for 1st Team with Steve Danieli at +6 coupled with Mark Spear's +2 facing off against the solid team of Johnny Fay (+6) and Joe Curtis (+2). Team Danieli and Spears earned only 1 point on the first handicap hole (1st) but that was good enough to beat the goose egg posted by their opponents, and so will take 1st Team.
Playing in the last group of the evening, Lou Silva took dead aim at the 2nd hole, and damn near holed the thing for an eagle. It came to rest 2" (that's inches) from the hole, and will earn the talented Mr. Silva Closest to Pin honors and cash. (If he had to choose. Lou will take the cash.) After a good read, Lou sunk the putt for a bird.
We had a respectable dozen birdies again for the night, and as will happen on occasion, only one survived. Little did he know at the time, but when Steve Lozzi was lining up his birdie attempt on 4, he was looking at $120 putt. He dropped it in, and will happily accept the hole pot. Nice job, Steve.
Birdies on 2 (White, Silva), 3 (Doonan, Finn), 6 (Shannon, Lima), and of course 8 (Fay, Begley), and 9 (McNeice, Curtis, James) were covered.
The new back nine optional birdie pool declared its first winners. A total of 19 players entered, and it paid off for six of them. Holes 11 through 16 were all individually birdied by, in order, Shannon, E. MacNeil, Doonan, James, Keating, and Payne), and each will receive $16 for their efforts.
The money for this pool does not come from league dues.
As noted, we had another fine collective performance, and other notables include the pride of County Kerry, Martin Enright at +5, Scott Silvia, Rich White and Paul Begley +4, and three of the steadiest players in the league, Jim Shannon, Bob Loring, and Mike McNeice, all at +3. Highpointer for the night was the resurgent TJ James at 17. Another notable event, playing the 9th hole the second time around, the Mighty Ed Finn just missed the very rare double eagle and had a tap in for eagle.
Remember that there will be no golf next week. We hope all you crazy cats of SIGL have a happy and safe Fourth of July!
See you next Tuesday. (Not!)
