It's hard to believe, but another year is now in the books. Where did the year go?
Coming into fine form just at the right time, is long-hitter Jim Lyons who had an outstanding +5 performance to snag Individual honors. The partnership of Capt. Dave Naimo (+4) and John Tracy, Esq. (+3) combined for a winning +7 to take Team.
Bob Loring came out of the gate early and set the pace with a nice approach to 17'5" on the 6th hole, and was never caught, so Catholic Memorial's finest will gladly accept a prize for Closest to the Pin.
There were 12 birdies for the night, and as usual, two will be compensated for their efforts. On the 3rd hole, Jim Egan got his first birdie of the year, but spoiler Joe Curtis rained on his parade. (Forget about that great deal on a Toyota, Joe.) The 8th hole was amply covered (Raynard, Finn, Turchette, DaSaro, and Loring), and Jim Shannon, Jim Lyons, and this humbler hacker made our last putts of the year good ones with birdies on 9. So that leaves Willard the Younger with a solo bird on 2, and steady Dan Svirsky, fresh off his morning round in the Brockton Senior Open, taking the 5th.
In addition to the Team and Individual winners, other notables include Raynard, Walsh, James, DaSaro, Loring, and Barry, all at +3. Highpointer for the night was Jim Lyons with 16.
Regarding new membership for next year: We have only a limited amount of spots available, so if you have someone who wants to join, please let us know as soon as possible during the offseason so they don't get shut out.
And finally, the tournament: After allocating funds for the banquet, we will be playing for $3,500 in prize money. In addition, there will be an optional $20 skins birdie pool and an optional $5 pay-all birdie pool. See TJ to get in. You must be signed up with TJ prior to teeing off to be eligible. With a potential of $1,000 in the birdie pools, there will be a total of $4,500 on the table.
First through fourth place teams will be paid $800, $500, $300, and $200 respectively. The rest of the field (5th - 10th) will receive $100 each. So everyone who tees it up will receive at least $25 in prize money.
Easton has very generously offered us a reduced rate of $45 for greens and cart (regularly $62). Easton and SIGL are requesting that everyone take a cart. Pay individually at the desk, and let the desk know that you are in the SIGL tourney. Easton members will pay their regular cart rate. The start time has been changed to 8:00 AM from 7:45. Please be on time.
Please make sure that your points earned total is accurate before submitting the card, and have LAST names clearly recorded on the card. (John, Paul, Ringo, and George won't do.)
Good luck and see you Sunday!

CTP-WEEK 20 6TH HOLE
With good weather, crisply cut fairways, and improving greens, we returned to the fine play for which we are known throughout the land. There were only 15 players who did not meet quota, and we had a healthy ten birdies.
There were plenty of good performances, but the one that stands out was delivered by the steady John Hrenko, who will collect for the fourth time this year with an outstanding +7 to take the Individual prize. That was also good enough to lead the way to the Team honor, along with this humble hacker, who contributed a respectable +2, to finish at +9. We were able to prevail in a card-off tiebreaker against the valiant effort of Ed Finn and Mark Spears: par/par vs. par/bogey on the first hole.
And it was nice to see Eric Armbruster get on the money board for the first time with a nifty tee ball to 6'2" on the 4th hole to take Closest to the Pin.
We had ten birdies for the night, and as it seems most weeks lately, two will pay. Jim Lyons sunk his birdie putt on 2, and TJ James was the lone birdie on 6. (TJ seemed more thrilled, though, with his new-found skill, of what he calls "putt it and pop it" out of greenside rough, which resulted in three tap in pars. And Jim got his dander up later in the round when the slow foursome in front would not let the twosome of Jim and Mayhem Mike play through. With a little anger adrenaline, Jim proceeded to rifle his drive on 8 pin high left of the green while they were putting, and roped his second shot on 9 up onto the green while they putting, finally eliciting a hostile response from the slow pokes. Serenity now, buddy.) Birdies on 4 (Burke, Dave Weber), 8 (Finn, Hrenko, Szczurko), and 9 (Finn, Begley, Loring) were smashed.
Other notable for the night include Ed Finn at +5, TJ James, Bob Loring, and Mark Spears at +4, and Eric Armbruster, John Fay, Scott Hzurd, Dave Weber, and Dan Szczurko at +3. Highpointers were Finn, Loring, and Hrenko at 17.
Playing teams for the Sept. 25th tourney will be announced sometime before next Tuesday. Two players have not indicated whether they are playing or not. We have to know now. (Easton is waiting for a firm count of golfers and diners.) If there is no response by tomorrow, 09/16, you will not be included in the tournament.
Congrats are in order for two of our fine SIGLers: Jim Shannon dropped a 40-yard pitch shot into the hole on 13 for an eagle, and hats off to Mike Nolan for his first career hole in one, which he recently achieved at Bass River while on a three-day Cape golf trip with 11 other SIGL n'er do wells. Nice work men!
And finally, a hearty welcome back to Len Lima, who, tough old coot that he is, was back on the course practically before he had his hospital gown off!
See you next Tuesday.

WEEK 19 CTP: 4TH HOLE
I'm not saying the greens were slow Tuesday, but the bearskin rug on the floor of my mancave is faster on the Stimpmeter. The only thing slower than the greens was the pace of play of the schoolboys who went out in front of us. How is it that 60 year old golfers can walk down a fairway faster than 17 year olds? It ain't right. Sorry for the glacial pace, but getting the schoolboys to pick it up is like trying to get a mule to do something it doesn't want to do; it ain't happening.
It looks like this league could use a healthy dose of lithium because week to week we are all over the place. One week, we play super lights out golf, and the next it looks like we just picked up the game for the first time. This week we had only eight players who exceeded their quota, and we had an all-time record low of two birdies, and an eagle.
There was one however who stepped up to center stage, and this week that was Greg Willard, who had his season's best performance. After parring the tough first hole, Greg set himself off from the crowd with a neat chip-in eagle on the Closest to the Pin 2nd hole. You can't get any closer to the pin than the bottom of the cup.
Greg finished with an impressive +7 to easily capture Individual honors, and took alternate partner Jim Egan (-1) along for the ride to the Team win also. So with the Individual, Team, and CTP win, along with one third of the skins pool, Greg will gladly accept $112 in prize money, the fourth week in a row that we have had a $100 plus winner.
As noted, we had a record low two birdies, along with Greg's eagle. (Last week we sunk 19 birdie putts.) It seemed that no matter how hard you hit it, the ball wouldn't get to the hole. (The good news is that the greens were cut on Wednesday; the bad news is that the roller is broken again.) Two who did find the hole were Scott Silvia on 3 and Johnny MacNeil on the 8th hole. There were no covered birdies.
The only other notables were Dad Dana Willard at +3, and Mike Bradley, Paul Begley, and Dan Svirsky at +2. Highpointer for the week was Greg Willard with 18.
Hard to believe that the season is almost over. (Two more weeks,) The year-end tourney is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 25th at 7:45. Next week, there will be a sheet at the desk; please mark IN or OUT next to your name. If you leave it blank, it will be inferred that you are not playing.
And finally, our good friend Lenny Lima had an unfortunate medical incident on the 11th hole on Monday. And if it weren't for the expert emergency care provided by Dr. Lou Silva, ..... well, you know. But Len is now out of the hospital, home recuperating, and already plotting his return to the links. We look forward to seeing you back soon, buddy!
See you next Tuesday.

WEEK 18 CTP: 2ND HOLE
Apparently, we have found our specialty, which is sinking putts on heavily aerated and sanded greens. Hard to believe, but we had an amazing season-high 19 birdies for the night, and a lot of really good scores to boot with conditions that normal golfers might find difficult; but then again, no one has ever accused SIGLers of being normal.
Rick Keating, the pride of St. Mary's of Lynn, stepped up into the limelight this week and will be rewarded handsomely for his efforts. (After Rick, the most renowned alumni of St. Mary's was the late great Tony C.)
Rick's +7 was good enough to take the Individual prize, and he also led his partner Jim Lyons (E), who was really hitting his drives well, to Team honors at +7. Rick and Jim bested Bob Loring's and Paul McDermott's +7 in a card-off (Keating birdie on 17.) However, Bob and Paul were formidable opponents, as they birdied four of the first five holes between them.
And again, Dan Svirsky just can't catch a break. A couple of weeks ago, Dan had 21 points, 3 birdies, and a +10, but came up empty. This week he striped his tee ball on 14 to 4'5", but it was still not good enough to win Closest to the Pin because he was out-Danned by Mr. Szczurko who laced a beauty to 4'2", proving once again that golf, like sex, is often a game of inches. (And to add saltpeter to the wound, he sunk the birdie putt, only to see it covered later by Paul McDermott.)
As noted, we had a season-high 19 birdies on sanded, aerated greens on holes that we play only a couple of times a year. Go figure. The only holes not birdied were the 16th with a really tough pin, and the 18th. There were 15 birdies on the first four holes (10-13) alone. But after the dust settled, again there were only two birdies that stood out, and those were Dave Naimo's on the tough 15th, and Rick Keating's on the tougher 17th hole.
Aside from the Individual and Team winners, other notables for the night were Bob Loring and Dan Szczurko at +4, and Dave Naimo, John Hrenko, Jim Shannon, Ryan Burke, Scott Silvia, Steve Anderson, and Paul McDermott, all at +3. (This humble hacker wasted a nice 37, good for 18 points by doing it on the wrong side.) Highpointer for the night was Rick Keating with 19.
And finally, time is fast approaching for those of you who will be getting into Obo's football elimination pool. Mail your $30 entry fee to John Carrabino, 233 Algonquin Trail, Ashland, MA 01721 (made out to John) or you can pay me (LB) at the course (cash, or check made out to John.) For those of you getting in for the first time, e-mail Bino at hightopper@gmail.com and he will set you up. Don't be shut out.
See you next Tuesday.

WEEK 17 CTP: 2nd or 14th
Well, after the out of this world performances last week, we came back down to Earth on Tuesday. It seems it's either feast or famine, and this week we were closer to famine, with only 17 golfers exceeding quota, and most of those at +1 or +2.
Of course, there is always an exception to every rule, and this week that exception was steady Steve Lozzi, who has been playing good golf all year long. On the back of birdies on 2 and 9, Steve came in with an impressive 37 (and season-low? 76) good for 19 points and a +6.
Last week that would have barely gotten honorable mention, but this week that was much the best, so Steve will gladly accept the Individual prize. While he was at it, Loz also captained the winning Team with the able-bodied Wayne Musgrove who chipped in with a solid +3 for a +9.
Closest to the Pin on 9 is always close, and so this week it took an approach to 3'5" by Greg Willard to best Jim Lyons for the CTP cash. Next week, Closest will be the 2nd hole, or the 14th if the course's aeration schedule requires us to play the back.
There were only ten birdies for the night, and again, only 2 that will receive compensation. Steve Lozzi will add $55 to his cash pile with a bird on 2 and his partner in crime Saul Payne will take the other half of the pot with his birdie on 4. Birds on 6 (Barry, Burke), 8 (Curtis, Meyer, Musgrove), and 9 (Lozzi, G. Willard, Aronson) were smashed.
There weren't a lot of good scores, with only nine teams on the plus side of the ledger. One playing foursome was a combined -15. (I won't mention any names, but I know you MacNeil boys can play better than that.) So the only other notables were auto magnate Jim Egan at +4, and Jim Lyons, Saul Payne, and this humble hacker, all at +3. Highpointer for the night was Steve Lozzi with 19.
And finally, to all you quota complainers: For those of you who think that because you had a bad night, that your quota should dramatically go down the next week; it doesn't work that way. With this many nights under our belts, one or two bad nights will not have a great effect on your quota. The Cray XC-40 supercomputer I keep in my climate-controlled basement has it all figured out, so just remember: the machine doesn't lie.
See you next Tuesday.

WEEK 16 CTP: 9TH HOLE
Never in the illustrious history of this league have we had a better collective scoring performance, as it seemed that everyone and his brother was lighting it up. I wasn't able to play so I don't know: Did they temporarily enlarge the holes or something?
On a typical night, there were many worthy candidates who could have been star of the day, but this week it took an extra super performance to earn that honor, and that belongs to young buck Ryan Burke who broke out with an all-time record tying 22 points. Ryan was already having a great round through eight holes, when he really finished with a flourish by eagling the 9th, to finish with a record-breaking +13 to take Individual. And it's only fitting that Ed MacNeil (+4), as an alternate, would be paired up with Ryan to take the Team prize at +17.
Closest to the Pin on the 8th hole goes to steady Ed Finn, who striped one in to 6'2", and naturally sunk the birdie putt.
There were an impressive 16 birdies on the night, in addition to the eagle, but again only two that will pay. Bob Loring will collect for his bird on 2, and of course Ryan Burke will get rewarded for his eagle on the 9th, which topped four birdies on that hole. Birds on 3,4,5, and 8 were smashed.
Dan Svirsky also had a career night with a 36, three straight birdies (3,4,5), 21 points and a +10. On almost any other night EVER that would have been easily enough to win but not this week. (Sometimes life just ain't fair Dan.) Also turning in a super round was the recently retired John MacNeil who also had three birds, and 19 points, +7.
Other notables include Scott Hzurd at +6, and Mark Nolan and Dan Szczurko at +4. In addition, there were seven more players at +3. (Hey, no more complaining about your quota being too high!)
And finally, at the three quarter pole, we have distributed $3,194 to 42 out of 54 active members. To date, the top ten earners are:
McDermott $237 Doonan $159
Barry 222 Lima 155
Finn 173 Hrenko 153

CTP-WEEK 15: 8TH HOLE
After a week where half the league was AWOL for some reason, we were back in almost full force, and we resumed our fine midseason play.
The hot hand this week belonged to Jekyll and Hyde Dan Svirsky who turned in an impressive 38, worth 17 points and a winning +6.
Ed Finn and Ryan Burke paired up by each producing a robust +4, for a Team-winning total of +8, prevailing over Mr. Svirsky and Hzurd (+2) in a card-off.
On the Closest to the Pin 6th hole, Lenny Lima's 14'1" held up for most of the night, but that was bested in the end by Mark Nolan with a nifty tee ball to 11'. (And he sunk the bird.)
There was a modest nine birdies for the night, but only two will be rewarded with cash. Eric Aronson gets on the money board for the first time with a bird on 4, and Terry Thompson continues his impressive play and winning ways with a fine birdie on the 5th hole. Birdies that died on the vine include the 3rd hole (Svirsky, Anderson), the 6th (Finn, Mark Nolan), and 9 (Finn, John MacNeil, Anderson).
In addition to the Team and Individual winners, other notables include comeback player of the year Steve Anderson at +5, the happily retired Johnny Fay at +4, and Eric Aronson, Jim Shannon, Terry Thompson, Dave Weber, and the I-can't catch-a-break Ed MacNeil, all at +3. Highpointer for the night was Dan Svirsky at 17.
And finally, the accolades keep coming from far and wide for the impressive accomplishments of SIGLers this season. The club championship was recently held at Easton, and again, we were more than well represented. Congrats to on-sabbatical Greg Paone for taking the crown in the A flight in an exciting playoff finish. And hats off to Steve Lozzi and Bill Doonan for finishing 3rd in that division. Also, after winning the member/guest tourney earlier this year, Rich McKenna added the B flight championship to his already impressive resume. And a tip of the cap to future SIGLer Jim Crook (once he gets his wedding and graduate school out of the way, Jim will be able to concentrate on the important things, like golf on Tuesdays) who placed second, and to John Hrenko who secured third in the B division. Job well done, men!
See you next Tuesday.

WEEK 14 CTP: 6TH HOLE
I wasn't able to make it Tuesday, but I have it on good authority that a lot of good golf was played again, as we continue in our fine mid-season form. (Where was everybody else, as we had a season-low 38 golfers tee it up this week? That just means more cash for the year-end tourney.)
Apparently, getting a new cow valve installed in the old ticker works wonders for your golf game, as good guy Steve Anderson played udderly fantastic after coming back from his heart surgery. Steve broke through with a crisp 39 with a birdie, good for a winning +8 as Individual. Earning a respectable +1, and getting teamed with the star of the day, Mr. Anderson, Dan Szcurko will round out the winning Team at +9.
On the 4th hole, Mike Bradley edged out Lou Silva with a neat 7'1" approach. Although Mayhem has never missed a 7 foot putt, somehow this one didn't fall for the bird, but he will gladly accept his cash reward for Closest to the Pin.
There were ten birdies for the night, and four of those will earn an envelope. John Hrenko continues his hot hand (+7) by sinking surviving birds on 2 and 6. Brian Murphy had his best night of the year at +6, and will be rewarded for his birdie on 5, while also getting on the money board for the first time. And Mike Bradley added to his CTP winnings with a paying bird on 9.
Birdies that did not survive were on 3 (Keating, E. MacNeil), 7 (Silva and James, while playing in the same group), and 8 (Anderson, M. Nolan).
Other noteworthy performances were turned in by the hard luck Ed MacNeil at +6, and TJ and Paul Begley at +4 each. Highpointer for the night was John Hrenko with 17.
Easton CC recently completed its elimination match play championship, and as expected, SIGL was well represented. Congratulations to the always steady Bob Loring, who prevailed in the B Division, and to Saul Payne, a dentalman and a scholar, for earning the crown in the C Division. Well done, men!
And finally, all the major golf championships have been played, and we're happy to report that SIGLers have swept the last three of the season in the popular Easton CC pools: This humble gambler took the US Open, Mark Nolan nailed the British Open (I refuse to call it the Open Championship), and TJ completed the trifecta by winning the PGA Championship pool. Not only can SIGLers play, we can pick 'em, too!
See you next Tuesday.

WEEK 13 CTP: 4TH HOLE
We continue our fine midseason play with many outstanding scores, and only 19 players coming in below quota.
Every few weeks, this humble hacker finds his way out of the rut of mediocrity, and posts a good score. This was the week, and so my +8 turned out to be, as they say at the horse track, "much the best" for the Individual prize. I happened to be paired with TJ, who had a fine +3, so SIGL management will share the Team honor at +11.
Bill Doonan went out early and crafted a fine 10'6" shot into the 2nd hole, and despite many other game attempts, Big Bill's held up all day, so he will humbly accept the CTP cash.
We have been on quite a birdie run of late, and this week that means that another 14 attempts found the hole for bird. In recent weeks, the 9th hole has given up any semblance of respectability, and this week allowed another six subpar scores. The 3rd hole was covered, as was 8. Left to share the pool was this hacker on 2, John Hrenko on 4, and for the second week in a row Paul McDermott will receive an envelope for his birdie on the 5th hole.
In addition to those who have won some cash, there were many other fine performances. Notables include Ed Finn at +6, Chris Sullivan and Jim Hzurd at +4, Dawn Weber at +3, and Keating, Tracy, Raynard, Szczurko, Begley, Burke, Lozzi, and Loring (who had a 76 for the night), all at +2.
See next Tuesday.

WEEK 12 CTP: 2ND HOLE
When did we get so good all of a sudden? Continuing a nice trend, we again had some very fine golf played by many SIGLers.
On the hottest of streaks is the great Joe Curtis, who turned in another stellar performance this week with a crisp 36 (one bird, seven pars, one bogey) for an impressive +9, which will earn him Individual honors.
Also sharing the podium this week is Terry Thompson, who exploded for three birdies, a 37, and an outstanding +8. And since there is a little room left on the podium, up steps Scott Silvia, who as Terry's partner, had maybe his best night ever with a 39, good for 16 points and his own +8. We're having SIGL archivists rummage through old records as we speak, but Terry and Scott's +16 might be a league record.
As expected, there were a lot of fine approach shots into the 9th pin, but the one that outshines the others is Greg Willard's 8'1" to capture the Closest to the Pin prize.
Again, there was a bushel of birdie putts (16 this week) that were drained, but only two will produce a reward. Bob Loring continues his fine play and will collect for his birdie on 2, and Terry Thompson really had the putter working as he had three birdies on the night, and will be paid for his survivor on 9. (Interestingly, none of the close-in attempts found the hole, so it took Terry's bomb from downtown to split the pot with Bob.) Holes 3,4,5,6, and 8 were birdied by two or more players.
Other notables for the night include John Tracy and Mark Nolan at +6, Jim Egan and Ryan Burke at +5, Dave Weber and Tom Nolan at +4, and Jim Shannon, Paul McDermott, and Dan Svirsky who all came in at +3. Highpointer for the night was Terry Thompson with 20.
Odds and Ends:
Payment for the second half was due this week. If you have not paid by the end of the night next week, you will be dropped from the sign-in sheet, and become just a vague memory.
Mark Nolan may not have won anything with his fine +6 this week, but he did cash big in the Easton CC British Open pool with his prescient picks instead. His combo of Mickelson, McIlroy, and Garcia came in at a winning -25 total. Nice job Mark.
And finally, a hearty welcome back next week for SIGLer Steve Anderson who underwent heart valve replacement surgery three months ago, and is now ready to rejoin the team better than ever. Welcome back Steve!
See you next Tuesday.
THAT EXTRA PUTTING PRACTICE THAT TERRY THOMPSON HAS MANAGED TO SQUEEZE IN IS REALLY STARTING TO PAY OFF!

+10
IND: PAUL RAYNARD +9 $25

WEEK 11 CTP: 9TH
Well, we closed out the first half of the year in fine midseason form with plenty of sizable plus numbers. Having his best round of the year was Paul Raynard, who exploded for a memorable +9, which will earn him Individual honors by way of birdies on 3 and 6. Paul was well positioned to also take the Team prize, but had no help from his partner. (Eddie Mac, why didn't you save some of those points from your own +9 a couple of weeks ago; you could have used them this week.)
That opened the door for two other worthy candidates to take Team honors: Bob Loring has finally been rewarded this week for his season-long good play. Bubba sunk putts on 2 and 9 to come home with an outstanding +6. Partner Paul McDermott also had one of his finest rounds of the year, and contributed a healthy +4 to combine for a leading +10.
A bunch of golfers were all over the pin on 8, but the shot that stands out is Terry Moore's approach to 5'8" to snag Closest to the Pin cash.
We had an impressive 17 birdies for the night, which is even more impressive considering how difficult it is to get the ball to roll to the hole. All holes but 1 and 7 were conquered by SIGL sharpshooters. The 6th hole was particularly humbled with five birdie putts finding the hole. Also smashed were 2,3,4,8, and 9. So if you are paying attention, that means that there was only one birdie that lived, and that was sunk by the deserving Paul McDermott who hit a great approach on 5 to just below the front pin and calmly drained the $110 putt.
Mr. McDermott has an interesting approach when it comes to making sure that he gets the ball to the hole: If he leaves a putt short, he does ten push-ups on the next tee. (No kidding.) In fact, I like the idea so much that I'm going to start doing the same thing: Whenever I leave a putt short, I'm gonna have Paul do ten push-ups.
As noted, there was a lot of good play out there this week. In addition to the winners, other notables include the ever smooth Mike McNeice at +5 (and a tidy 77 for the night), Joe Curtis, who continues his stellar play, and Jim Shannon at +4, and the ever dangerous Steve Peterson, and Jay Chapman at +3. Highpointer for the night was Forest Hill's own Bob Loring with 18.
Hard to believe that we are already into the second half of the season, and please remember that payments are due next week. Also, when planning your early fall schedule, keep in mind that our year-end tournament will be on Sunday morning, Sept. 25th.
And finally, at the half way mark, we have distributed $2,141 in cash prizes to 34 out of 54 active players. For those of you who have been shut out, you have the entire second half to make some hay. The top ten money winners to date are:
Paul McDermott $200 Joe Curtis $123
Len Lima 155 Steve Lozzi 121
Larry Barry 135 John MacNeil 87
Bill Doonan 134 Rick Walsh 84
Ed Finn 123 Steve Peterson 75
See you next Tuesday.

WEEK 9 RESULTS
TEAM: JOE CURTIS +6 $25
JOHN TRACY +3 $25
+9
IND: JOE CURTIS +6 $25
CTP: ED FINN 6'0" $25
6TH
SKINS BIRDIES: MARK SPEARS 3RD $73
ED FINN 5TH $73
JOE CURTIS 8TH $73
COVERED: 2,4,6,9
Another fine night for a round of golf, (or in the case of my group; two rounds) and fairway conditions were outstanding. Despite the very slow and fuzzy greens, a lot of good scores were returned, with only 12 players not reaching quota.
Stepping into the spotlight this week is the Pride of Southie, Joe Curtis, who put it all together for an outstanding +6, which earned him Individual, and led the way to the Team prize along with alternate John Tracy, who chipped in with a nice +3. Joe, who bears a striking resemblance to fellow SIGLer Rick Walsh, also took a third of the doubled-up birdie pool with one on the 8th, of all holes. Joe's stellar performance will earn him a cool $123 in cash money. (Playing partner Ed MacNeil wonders how Joe's +6 and one birdie can win a tidy sum, while last week, Ed's +9 and two birdies doesn't earn him a dime. Joe has already told Ed that good clean living is the difference.)
Closest to the Pin this week goes to Ed Finn, who roped one in to within 6 feet of that tough back pin. He sunk the birdie putt, but that was only good enough to smash Rick Walsh's great chip-in bird from behind the hole.
There were many SIGLers who had outstanding nights. In addition to the money winners, other notables include Greg Willard, Terry Thompson, and Bill Doonan at +5, and Wayne Musgrove, Dave Naimo, Ryan Burke, Larry Barry, Steve DaSaro, Mark Spears, and the ever-steady Bob Loring, all at +4. Highpointer for the night was Ed Finn at 17.
There were a respectable 12 birdies for the night, and there would have been plenty more if the grounds crew hadn't apparently put down a layer of velcro over most of the greens. The 2nd hole was smashed by Naimo and Loring, the 4th by DaSaro and Barry, the 6th by Finn, Walsh, and Thompson, and the 9th hole by Shannon and Svirsky. Left standing were Mark Spears on 3, Ed Finn on the 5th, and Joe Curtis on 8. The birdie pool carried over from last week, so these three fine gentlemen will share the $220 pot.
Hard to believe that next week marks the end of the first half, and don't forget that the 2nd half payment is due the week after that.
And finally, with the British Open coming up, there will be a pool to pick the best three-player combo. For an entry fee of only 10 points, it makes watching the tourney a lot more fun, and with a little luck, it can prove to be quite profitable, as I can attest from the recent U.S. Open pool. See TJ or inquire at the bar for details.
See you next Tuesday.
YOU CAN'T WIN IF YOU DON'T PLAY

WEEK 8 RESULTS
TEAM: STEVE PETERSON +10 $25
MIKE KELLY + 2 $25
+12
IND: STEVE PETERSON +10 $25
CTP: STEVE PETERSON 5'0" $25
NO SKINS BIRDIES
COVERED: 2,3,5,9
WEEK 9 CTP: 6TH
WEEK 9 BIRDIE POOL: $220
Well, we managed to have decent weather, course conditions were superb, and everyone seems to be hitting their mid-season stride. In fact, it was by far the best collective performance of the year. An impressive 15 players were +3 or better, and equally impressive, there were only 11 golfers who did not hit their quota, But at center stage this week, who not only had the performance of the week, but of the year, was big Steve Peterson. After starting off bogey-bogey, Steve finished with three birdies and four pars for a memorable one under par 35. That was good for a league season high of 22 points. In fact, our reporters on the ground observed that Steve had a couple of other very makable birdie opportunities that did not fall, including the 4th hole where he had a CTP putt from 5 feet.
Steve's +10 was good (by a hair) to capture Individual, and he led his partner Mike Kelly, who had a respectable +2, to the Team prize at +12.
As noted, Mr. Peterson striped in a beauty on 4 to 5'0" to beat out some other very fine shots to also take the CTP cash.
The most that any one golfer can win in one night is $185: $25 each for Team, Individual, and CTP, and $110 for sole winner in the birdie pool. And, for the first time in the history of our storied league, it appeared that this would be done Tuesday night. Steve had wrapped up Team, Individual, and CTP, and it appeared that his birdie on 5 would be the only one that would live. However, with two outs in the ninth, this humble hacker broke up Steve's perfect game when I walked into the clubhouse minutes before sundown with a birdie on 5 on my card. That means there will be a carryover to next week of $220.
As noted, there were many outstanding performances this week. Chief among them were Dr. Saul Payne at +6, Dave Weber, Alex Turchette, and Larry Barry at +5, and Rick Walsh, Ted Meyer, Bob Loring, and Steve DaSaro at +4. But the real hard luck player of the week, and the year, was Easy Ed MacNeil, who had a tremendous night with 19 points, shot a 37 with two birdies, was 9 points over quota, and yet walked away with nothing. Although he was beaten out by one point for Individual, he still had a good shot at Team, but his partner let him down with a -6. Sometimes life ain't fair Eddie.
Odds and ends: 1) Next week is Week 9. Second half payments are due on Week 11. 2) Circles on your scorecard are for birdies ONLY. Do not circle any hole score if it is not a birdie.
And finally, congratulations to former SIGL great Rich McKenna, who along with his ageless father Dick, and his two sons, won the Easton CC member/guest this past weekend.
See you next Tuesday.
HONESTY IS AN INTEGRAL, NOT AN OPTIONAL, PART OF THE GAME
Donald, honestly now, if you count every shot, how many strokes does it typically take you to play the 18th hole at your Doral Blue Monster course?
Yeah, that's what we thought.

UPDATE TO WEEK 7 RESULTS:
In addition to birdies on Holes 3 and 4 that were covered, there were also covered birdies on Hole 9. This does not affect the payouts or the winners. This is just informational to let those who had a birdie on 9 know that their birdie didn't live. This was not included in the original results which are posted below.
WEEK 7 RESULTS

WEEK 8 CTP: 4TH
Well, we were lucky to have pleasant weather for a night of golf, but that is where the pleasantness ended for many of us. We have to apologize to the groups that went out around 3:00 to 3:30 for the painfully slow pace of play Tuesday. This year, Easton decided to put out a mini-league of three groups in front of us, and they have been beyond slow, and with no ranger on duty. Three times this year, our group has had to start bouncing around the course because we couldn't handle playing behind them. It's not that they are particularly bad; it is that they are ignorant a-holes, who think that since they paid greens fees, they have the course to themselves. Easton CC management is on it.
Apparently getting out before the golfers from hell is the key because Mr. Len Lima was star of the day, ladies and gentlemen. Len had a very impressive 14 points, good for a +6. That was more than enough to garner Individual honors, and was also key in securing the Team prize along with Bill Doonan, who contributed with a solid +2. Lena and Bill have now both won three times this year.
There were only six birdies that fell this week, and two of those survived. Not that he is greedy or anything, but Len Lima will humbly accept payment for his bird on 8, and Steve DaSaro got on the money board for the first time with a nifty 3 on the 5th hole. The only other holes that were birdied were 3 and 4 with two each.
Another first time winner was Dan Szczurko who fashioned his third shot on 2 to within the length of your average NBA center (6'10") to take the CTP cash award. He had a golden opportunity to grab a birdie that would have lived, but if you were not directly that hole, it was a tricky putt. (Dan, did you ever find your ball on 7? For some reason the area over by the 9th tee is the hardest place on the course to find a ball.)
Although there were only six birdies, there were many outstanding scores. In addition to those already mentioned, notables include Johnny Fay at +5, Eric Aronson and Mark Spears at +4, and seven others at +3. Highpointer was Steve Lozzi with 15, who had a sterling 75 for the night.
After seven weeks, here is the top of the leaderboard:
Len Lima $155
Larry Barry 135
Bill Doonan 134
Steve Lozzi 121
John MacNeil 87
And finally, good luck and have fun to all SIGLers who will be playing in the Easton member/guest this weekend.
See you next Tuesday.
