Where was everybody? Was it something we said? On what was for the most part a fine evening, we had 17 unexcused absences; go figure. The weather held off for most of the night, although the word "ominous" was heard a few times around 6:00. And a few scaredy cats ran for the clubhouse around that time.
Scores were all over the lot but many had their best night of the year. Star of the day this week is rookie phenom Sean Costello who posted an impressive +7 to take Individual. Our man Bino, who was contemplating hari kari over the recent state of his golf game, overcame a triple bogey out of the gate and rebounded sharply with 14 points, good for a +6. Paul McDermott did his part with a +4 to share Team honors with John.
Hard luck team of the week has to be Len Lima (+5) and Bob Frick (+3), and Bob had two birdies covered to boot. Notable performances were also turned in by Dawn Weber with a +6 and Ed Finn at +4. Highpointers bunched up at 16 points were Texeira, Cacciapaglia, Finn, Dawn Weber, Costello, Frick, and La Rosa. Also worth a mention is the best cumulative 18 hole card turned in all year: led by Todd Texeira's 74, the fearsome foursome of Texiera, McNeice, Costello, and James had 9 birdies and an average score of 77.
Going out early, Todd chipped one close for a CTP on the 2nd hole of 1 ft., 11 in., written down as 23''. Marker Sean Costello explained that at B.C. High he learned that two marks (") equals inches, but apparently not having the benefit of a solid Catholic education, subsequent groups read it as 23 ft. and continued recording supposedly closer scores. So sorry, Cacci, your 3 ft. 9 in. didn't make the cut, but your bomb of a drive to 160 yards was very impressive anyway. We haven't had this much confusion over a CTP measurement since Scott Bamford once wrote down 5 ft. 18 in. (Prior to his company going out of business by underpricing every job, Scott was a crack construction estimator.)
We had a respectable 11 birdies for the night, and for the third week in a row, only two survived, good for $54 each. Paul McDermott will take half the pot with one on 5, and red-hot Sean C. will gladly take the cash for the only bird on the 8th hole. Asked how long his birdie putt was, Sean said, "About 216 inches.", which we found odd.
You may have noticed a lot of turtles on the course last night, and by that, we don't mean slow players. We found one trudging across 7 green, and Bino's group came upon one in a greenside bunker. Aware that you can't touch a loose impediment in a hazard, animal-lover Mike Bradley gently removed it from the sand by opening his stance and hitting two inches behind the little guy; one shell of a shot.
And Greg Paone has asked the executive committee if his front-nine card on Sunday could count for league play. On that day, Greg really had it going and carded a 34 with three birdies, good for 23 points on the front, on his way to a tight 74. However, his application did not include the expected "administrative fee" and so has been denied without review. And finally, this humble hacker, playing alongside Greg on Sunday, and just trying to keep up, carded his fourth career ace with one on 16; proving once again that it is better to be lucky than good. (And apparently sensing that a complimentary hole-in-one drink may be in the offing that day, Johnny MacNeil made his first Easton weekend appearance all year.)
See you next Tuesday.
