Recap Week 9

A good night at Easton and we had the best attendance of the year. Hard to believe that next week will be the last night of the first half. Payment of $305 will be due on the 11th night, which is 7/10.

John Tracy made what he thought was the shot of the day, just missing a hole-in-one on the closest-to-the-pin 6th hole, and leaving it  20 inches from the  cup. But little did he know that when he got to the green, Paul Raynard was already on the board with 10 inches, having also just missed an ace. Sometimes 20 feet wins and sometimes 20 inches, I guess, isn't good enough.

The Willard cartel continues its winning ways with brother Blake getting on the money board with a bird on 1 and Dad coming through with team (along with Jim Egan) and individual honors.

Other birds that lived were Karas on 4......Peters on 5....and Aronson on 9  Birdies on 2,6,8 ..... were covered.

Scorekeeping 102: Last call for circling birdies. Starting next week, if you don't circle your birdie, it will not be counted. By not circling a birdie, but still expecting payment, you are expecting us to review every hole of every card to try to pick out hidden birdies. This is not Where's Waldo.

And just a week after dodging the surgeon's knife, who to our wondering eyes did appear but Bino, ready for golf and an ice-cold beer. So without further adieu, HEEEEERE'S JOHNNY !!!! :

I get to the first tee and there were tears of joy coming from the sky or was it rain. I was feeling good and decided to try it out and happy to say all went well. I looked around the course and saw people doing double takes....is that who I think it is. I had no expectations and just swung easy...who new that's what it takes to play good...shooting a surprising 86.
TJ gets the round of the day shooting a 3 over 74....playing every day sure does help your game....living just in back of the 18th hole....he rolls out of bed and onto the course.

The 19th hole was the same except for our friendly neighborhood bartender Obo was not in his usual spot.... replaced by just another pretty face. It ain't gonna be the same....you could always count on an outburst or two with a bag of peanuts flying at your head at any given moment.

Recap Week 8

Another nice night at Easton, the greens were running fast and smooth, and we had a bunch of good scores and birdies.

Johnny Fay had his best night of the year with a +6 and teamed up with steady Greg Jurgilewicz to earn team honors at +10. (Sorry Scott, we lost the tiebreaker.)  Mark Spears had an impressive 16 points for a +6 and it was good to see Jim Thompson return to action with 13 points good for a +5. Welcome back, Jim.  And this humble hacker had it going with a 35, good for a Rich McKenna-like 21 points and a +8 that snagged the individual prize.

Bob Frick won a bunch of dough with only two strokes: His tee shot on the 4th was good for closest to the pin for $20, his 8' birdie putt was good for $30 and he won $7.50 in skins and goodies from his foursome. What a country.

Jurgy came out of the gate quick with a birdie on the 1st,  and Paul McDermott continues to know how get birdies that live by picking up one on the second hole. All other birdies were covered.

For those who signed up, after golf we had a great steak dinner with the Lombardi Leaugue that everyone seemed to enjoy. We're going to do the same thing on July 10th, this time having barbequed ribs. We'll put out a sign-up sheet next week. I think the cost will be $15.

Arithmetic 101: We're starting to get too many cards turned in where the quota points are not tallied correctly. Take the time to do it right. Starting next week, if you turn in a card in which you overreported the actual amount of points you got, your score will be discarded. You are responsible for your own score no matter who is scoring.

And finally, miracle of miracles, Bino was spared the knife last week. As he was laying on a gurney and hooked up to an IV, John informed the good doctor that after all this rest from work and golf that his neck felt alot better. On the spot, the doctor cancelled, or at least postponed, the surgery. Relief !! (There's no truth to the rumor that the surgeon's 10 o'clock tee time that morning had anything to do with his decision.) Bino is still going to be out of action for a while, and he really misses you jokers on Tuesday nights.

This is how it really happened
I was laying on the gurney as the surgery kept getting pushed back. My nurse had to go to lunch so they called in the receptionist with no experience to put the IV in me…. after using my arm as a pin cushion I started to see dead people. Next was a scene out of Airplane where they all lined up to slap me around to see if they could get one of my collapsed veins to reappear. Finally I get hooked up and waited for the good stuff to start dripping when the doctor comes in and asked how I felt. Not working for a month will cure a lot of pain. He decided not to do it…and like the roadrunner I grabbed my belongings and raced out of there.
Bottom Line….Work→Bad…..Golf→Good
The End
Bino

PS Thank You for all the well wishes and hope to be back on the course soon

Recap Week 7

As we all know, golf is a game of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, as Mike Bradley can attest, going from 3 points in Week 6 to 14 this week. For his effort, Mike captured individual and team honors and attained his goal of not getting shut out this year. He's off the schniede.

And just when we thought they went into the Witness Protection Program, Don Dillon, Peter Jaffe, and Marshall Poverman emerged from the shadows
to shoot some impressive golf. Don was +5, Peter +3 and team honors and Marshall +2. They must have been taking lessons all this time.  (Sorry Don, +5 is usually good enough to win, but you ran up against Mr. Hyde.)

Rick Walsh figured he had his second consecutive CTP at 2 feet on the 2nd hole after being on in two and making a great downhill eagle attempt, but  it was not to be as Greg Willard eagled the hole, and you can't do better than 0'0". Greg vaults past Rick into second place on the money board. The Willard family of mutual funds continues to pay handsome dividends. Captain Naimo had a nice night with birdies on 2 (covered) and 4 and earned $45 for his deft putting. Birdies on 6 (Jaffe, Turchette) and 9 (Bradley,Spears) were covered.

We've had 15 sign up for the steak dinner next Tuesday which will be right after golf. When you sign in at the pro shop for golf, there will be a sheet with your name on it to check off, and pay $15 at the desk, cash or card. If anyone else wants in, let me know before Friday because Easton is ordering food based on the total response.

We're sorry to hear that long-time SIGLer Scott Bamford will not be able to play the rest of the year. He might not be the best golfer in the league, but he's always been the most boisterous and always a pleasure to play with. Whenever you're ready to  return Scott, just let us know.

And finally, Bino is slated for surgery on Thursday, June 14th so let's wish him well, and drop him a line during his recuperation. Hang in there, Johnny.

Recap Week 6

It was another dank and dour night at Easton C.C., but attendance was good considering the foul weather. I hope everyone enjoyed playing the back nine, and we would do it more often, but generally course scheduling doesn't allow it.

Nice to see Chris Sullivan break out with a +4 night to snag individual honors. Tommy James had it going, shooting a 37/75 which earned him team honors along with a steady Mike Kelly. (With both of them living on the 18th green, they practice their putting and chipping all night long. No fair.) It appears Rick Walsh probably won closest to the pin on 14 at 19'5". However, the marker was not turned in by the last group, so as they say at the racetrack, we will have a steward's inquiry before results are official.

Paul McDermott continued his birdie ways with one on 10. Frank LaRosa (Lyme disease and all) increased his money lead with a bird on 11. Ed MacNeil cashed on 13. Father Dana continues the Willard family tradition of winning prize money with a bird on 15,and Dan Szczurko continues to hole birdie putts, this one on 16. All birdies lived.

There will be no Judge Smails Cup match play tourney this year. With the  amount of golfers in the league, the scheduling of matches, etc. and the amount of weeks it  would take to complete the tourney, it is too disruptive of regular league play. Money normally allocated for the tourney is being used for larger weekly payouts and more cash for the year-end tourney.

Handicapping 101: For the golfers who continually inquire (translation: bitch) about their quotas, here is how it works: Your quota is determined by the average of your BEST scores. Example: After 6 weeks, the average of your best 3 scores is your quota. After 14 weeks, it is the average of your best 7 scores, etc. It is the same method used in determining a USGA handicap: the top 50% of your scores determine your handicap, not all your scores. Therefore, when  you turn in a lousy score, your quota will not necessarily go down the next week because that isn't one of your better scores.

And finally, the steak dinner after golf has been moved by Mark Lombardi to June 19th. We didn't get a very big response on the sign-up sheet, so the price has been reduced to $14.95. Now how can you beat that ?!!
