WEEK 14 CTP - 4TH
Well, we had a few more players wander back, but still had only 43 tee it up this week; three weeks in a row with subpar attendance. Scores tightly hovered around quota again, with 33 out of 43 players within two points of their mark.
There were a few outliers to the good, and they were led this week by Eric Aronson who produced a stellar 15 points, good for a +5 and 1st Individual. The hot and cold Steve Dasaro was cooking with gas this week and will take 2nd Individual with a fine +4 posting.
Mr. Aronson was well positioned to cash in on a Team prize with a decent partner, and Ed MacNeil, known far and wide for his decency, did not disappoint as his respectable +1 put the duo over the top for 1st Team honors at +6.
Len Lima has also started to heat up, if only to keep up with his money-machine playing partners. Len's productive +3 was paired with a fine +2 by the steady Greg Willard to take 2nd Team at +5 in a card-off. The team of Mark Spears (+3) and Brian Murphy (+2) gave it a go, but Mr. Lima's par on the 5th broke the tie.
Easy Ed Finn made up for a mediocre round with a fine approach to 11'"8 on the 2nd Hole, which stood up all day and was good for CTP cash.
The good news in the skins pool is that, if you got a birdie, then you are getting paid. The bad news is that you have to split the pot seven ways. For the first time in memory, we had no covered holes while seven out of nine holes were birdied. Sharing the wealth will be Lozzi on 1, G. Willard on 2, McGarry (3), Aronson (4), Lima (7), White (8), and Curtis on 9.
With the backside closed for aeration, there was no B9 skins pool.
And with most golfers on or close to their quota, the only two standouts who did not cash this week were Mark Spears and this humble hacker, both at +3. Highpointer was Rich White at 16 points.
And finally, you may have noticed that the CTP markers that are provided by the club have faulty tapes measures. Unless you want me to make your hair hurt, I will spare you the "explanation" that Easton has given us as to why this is so, but most tapes don't start at 0 inches; for instance, the one used Tuesday starts at 5 inches. Therefore, a distance that is accurately 6' 2" would read 6' 7" on that tape. Instead of us going out and buying new tape measures and markers, etc., or instead of each group taking a measurement and then making a corrective adjustment, we will continue to use the Easton markers and just write down whatever the tape reads, and don't make any adjustment. If every group does this, then we will still get an accurate CTP winner. Oy Vey!
See you next Tuesday.

I've heard of fashionably late, but fashionably absent? For the second straight week, attendance was sparse, with only 38 of 55 SIGLers teeing it up. Is everybody on vacation? Together?
Over the past few weeks, scores have really come back to earth, with only seven golfers exceeding +2, and a whole bunch of minus scores.
But that didn't bother Gentleman Jim Shannon who had a breakout night with a season low 39 on the back of two birdies. That was good for 17 points and an easy win +8 for 1st Individual.
John Hrenko got back on track with a fine +4 and Jay Chapman matched John with his best night of the year at +4. And Mr. Hrenko's bogey on 1 was good enough to break the tie for 2nd Individual.
Jim Shannon had no help from his partner (sorry Jim, this humble hacker had his worst front side of the year) and as luck would have it, the +4 boys, Hrenko and Chapman were paired up this week, and will proudly take 1st Team honors.
Scott Silvia is starting to play better golf each week, and his +3 will be paired with his assigned alternate, friend Paul Raynard, who pitched in with his own +2 and they will collect for 2nd Team.
And Eric Aronson joined Chapman, Silvia, and Raynard of the 19th hole roundtable gang in getting an envelope by his fine approach on 9 to 8'5" to earn CTP cash.
There were only nine front side birdie putts that found the hole. Johnny MacNeil resumed his winning ways with a sole birdie on the 5th hole, and referee/umpire Dan McGarry got the call right on 9 with a surviving bird that earns him half the pot. Common birdies were had on 2 (Shannon, G. Willard), 3 (Shannon, Thompson, Doonan), and 8 (Chapman, Silvia).
There were not a lot of impressive scores this week, so aside from those who won some dough, the only others worth noting are Steve Danieli, Rick Walsh, and Mark Spears, all at +3. Jim Shannon was easily highpointer at 17.
Back nine birdies were even sparser than the front, with only five finding the hole. Rick Keating had a nice 3 on 15 and Steve Lozzi resumed his winning ways after a short break, to split the pot with a neat chip-in birdie on 17. The 13th hole puts out more than (fill in the blank with your favorite high school slut) and this week was birdied by Finn, Lozzi, and Keating.
And finally, we bid farewell to two long-time SIGLers and long-time good guys John Fay and Steve Peterson who will be moving on to new locations and new golf experiences. Best of luck gentlemen, and you are always welcome back.
See you next Tuesday.

First of all, where was everybody? If you again relied on the weatherman, you missed out on, what for Tuesday standards, was a pretty nice day and night. We had only 35 leaguers show up, which might be a season low.
We had another average collective performance, with most scores hovering right around quota. However, Steve Dasaro bucked that trend with a breakout night in which he posted 16 points, good for a superb +7. Rookie Bill Simmons spent the first half of the season getting a feel for the lay of the land, and started the second half with an impressive performance, posting his own +7. So again, it came down to a card-off, and Steve's par on 1 will earn him 1st Individual honors, with Bill taking second.
For the team competition, Mr. Dasaro needed an alternate to fill in for his no-show partner, and as luck would have it, Bill Simmons was first alternate, and was paired with Steve to easily take 1st Team at +14.
Peter Frasca has been playing steady golf all year, and this week had his best posting with a fine +6. Luckily he also had a solid partner in Dan McGarry at +3, and they will take 2nd Team at +9.
Good guy Paul Begley executed a fine approach shot on 8 to 6'5" which stood up all day, and Paul will have a CTP prize waiting for him in the box.
There were 12 birdie putts that fell on the front side, but most were bunched up on three holes, and when the dust cleared, there was only one bird left standing. And as luck would have it, it belonged to Bill Simmons who will take the whole pot, capping off an impressive $150 night, the highest single-night take of the year. Non-paying birds were had on 2 (Bourne, Turchette), 8 (Dasaro, Simmons, Aronson, Begley), and 9 (Finn, J. MacNeil, Frasca, Svirsky, Tracy).
As noted, most scores were nothing to write home about, but there was the usual amount of impressive performances that will not be rewarded with cash. Leading that pack is Alex Turchette who posted a season high +6, followed by Eric Aronson at +5, and Dan Svirsky, Jay Chapman, Mark Nolan, and Johnny MacNeil, all at +3. Highpointers this week are Steve Dasaro and Peter Frasca at 16 points each.
With only 35 players showing up, we had a respectable 21 enter the back nine skins pool, with 10 birdie putts finding the hole. And of those, three stood out as winners: Ed Finn, who had five birdies in 27 holes played, will be rewarded on 11. And it was nice to see Portuguese man-of-war Len Lima get on the money board with a fine bird on the 12th. And Wayne Musgrove will also cash for the first time with an impressive deuce on 16. The 13th hole was thoroughly humbled by Finn, Curtis, Lozzi, Danieli, and Leonard, and the 14th was smashed (Loring, Barry).
The general feedback is that there are a lot more birdies this year because we are playing combo tees. However, except for the 13th hole, which definitely has become a birdie hole, the white tees have not made that much of a difference. (The numbers don't lie.) For instance, of the 22 birdies sunk this week, 17 of them were from blue tees, and of the seven white tees we play over 18 holes, only one of those holes was birdied (the 13th). And those numbers are typical for the whole season. So, so much for the idea that we are killing it from the combos.
And a special tip of the cap to Holbrook's own Rick Walsh who, on the third leg of the 27 holes he played, posted his career low 9 hole score of even par. (We won't mention the first 18.)
And finally, 2nd half dues were due this week, but many remain unpaid, even those who played this week. Please make sure to bring payment next week. Any prize winners from Week 11 and Week 12, who do not pay next week, will not be receiving envelopes. Thanks.
See you next Tuesday.

WEEK 11 CTP 8TH HOLE
After a mediocre performance last week, we promptly got back in form with another outstanding day of scoring, with many big numbers. Playing partners Dan Svirsky and John Hrenko battled hole by hole for top honors and both finished with super +9s, with Danno narrowly prevailing with his tie-breaking par on 1. And the duo kept it going on the back as Dan finished with a 75, with Johnny finishing one stroke back at 76. Career rounds, gentlemen? If so, congratulations. If not, congrats anyway.
Dan and John were also lucky to be paired with a fine supporting cast as Mr. Hrenko's +9 was coupled with the smoking hot (that just means he's playing great golf) Steve Lozzi who contributed an outstanding +5 to take 1st Team honors at +14. Likewise, Dan S. got plenty of help from Tom James at +3 to take 2nd Team at +12.
There were many fine tee balls on the Closest to Pin 6th Hole, but the best of the lot was the Dighton Dynamo Greg Willard's approach to 5'9" to take the cash. But we won't know until the next paragraph if he sunk the birdie putt.
There were a healthy 17 birdies on the front nine and five of those will get paid. And for the first time in memory, every hole was birdied. Greg Willard started off a great round with a birdie on 1, Rick Walsh had a fine day and gets rewarded for his bird on 2, Steve Lozzi continues his roll with a 3 on 3, Scott Silvia cashed on the 5th, and J. Hrenko had the sole birdie on the 7th hole. Terry Thompson was crushed that his birdie on 4 was crushed (Svirsky), and yes, Greg sunk the birdie putt on 6 but so did Musgrove and Hrenko, 8 was smashed (Szczurko, Curtis), and so was the 9th (Begley, Mattes, Frasca, J. MacNeil, Svirsky).
As noted, we had a lot of great scoring and many were rewarded, but many were not. The hardest luck player of the day was Mark Nolan who posted a superb +8 but was shut out. Playing partner Scott had his own +8, but at least got paid for a bird. Other notables were Steve Mattes and Paul Begley at +6, Mike Leonard and Dan Szczurko posting +5s, and Bob Bourne and Dana Willard at +4. And for the record, Mike McNeice recorded a super 74.
We had 24 players enter the backnine skins pool, with nine birdies sunk and one third of those getting paid. Money maker Steve
Lozzi has the profitable knack of making birdies on holes all by himself so will take his reward for birdies on 13 and 16, and TJ added to his team prize with a birdie on the 17th. Birdies on 11 (Frasca, Walsh), 12 (Doonan, Svirsky), and 15 (Bourne, Walsh) were smashed.
At the halfway mark, we have dispersed $3,568 in prize money with 42 players collecting at least one envelope. These are the top ten earners to date:
Lozzi $377, J. MacNeil 273, Loring 262, Finn 193
McNeice 181, Shannon 140, Svirsky 135, Danieli 131
Tracy 125, Doonan 123
And as usual, SIGLers were well represented in the Easton CC Club Championship. Congrats to TJ James who captured the C Division crown, and to Ready and Steady Steve Lozzi (2nd in A Div.), John Hrenko (2nd in C Div.), and Steve Mattes, who took 3rd in the D Class. Nice work comrades.
And finally, the second half starts next week and payment is due: $335 or $65. We accept cash or checks, but sorry, do not accept Visa, Mastercard, or lame excuses.
See you next Tuesday.
