Some like it hot, but apparently not many SIGLers, as the sweltering heat took its toll on results, with a large majority of players failing to meet quota. Other impediments to good play were the aerated greens, playing the unfamiliar and more difficult back nine, and .....well that's enough excuses for one round; gotta save some for later.
Leading the way among the handful of outstanding players was the resurgent Chris Sullivan (Sully to his close friends) who exploded for a super +7 that paid many dividends. Chris's regular partner was Steve Peterson, who contributed his own outstanding +4, and their +11 was much the best for 1st Team honors. Sully was also drawn as an alternate, and put his +7 to good use along with Terry Moore's respectable +1 to take 2nd Team at +8.
After taking heat for 38 years at MCI-Walpole (corrections officer not inmate), the weather did not slow down big John Hrenko, who had his best night of the year with 17 points and a +7, good for 1st Individual after besting Mr. Sullivan's +7 in a card-off. (And John walked to boot.)
The other star of the night was Easy Ed Finn, with his own 17 points and a tight 37 on the league nine, with the 14th hole being berry, berry good to him. On his first go at the hole, his approach to 15' was good enough for Closest to Pin and naturally he sunk the birdie putt. On his replay of the hole, he repeated the process with a very similar approach shot, and another successful birdie putt. A handsome $107 was had for his efforts. (Not to mention that his winning birdies were good for a total of 11 skins among his playing partners.)
There were only seven birdies on the front, and three will be rewarded with skins money. Terry Thompson started off the night on the right foot with a bird on 10. Ed Finn's 2 on 14 held up, and Mike McNeice finished his first side on a high note with a birdie on 18 that lived. The 13th hole was halved by John Hrenko and Steve Danieli, and playing partners Hrenko and Dan Svirsky smashed 16.
The back nine produced only four birdies, with two paying off. The steady Rich White will be rewarded for his bird on 12, and Ed Finn's 2nd birdie of the night on 14 will also pay. Gary Russell and Rich White cancelled each other with birdies on 13.
As noted, there were not a lot of stellar play out there Tuesday. In addition to those who won prizes, the only other notables were Ed Leach and Mark Spears at +4 and Scott Silvia, Steve Lozzi, John Tracy, Rick Keating, and John MacNeil, all at +2. Highpointers for the night were Ed Finn and John Hrenko with 17 points each.
Despite our request a couple of weeks ago, one group continues to fill their scorecard up with circled numbers. As an example, on one side, they will have eight or nine scores circled, with one of them maybe being a birdie or maybe not. The committee has to stop and review all nine circles to see if there is a birdie hidden in there or not. The purpose of circling birdies is to easily distinguish them from other scores. Otherwise, the committee would have to review about 500 hole scores (54 golfers x 9 holes) to find birdies. By filling your card with non-birdie circles, you are defeating the purpose. If any card is submitted that way for the rest of the season, the card will not be processed, and each player will be replaced with an alternate.
And finally, we are happy to report that Paul Begley is doing very well in his recovery from major surgery a few weeks ago, and is hoping to be able to play in the year-end tourney. See ya then Paul.
See you next Tuesday.
JUST NOT MANY SIGLers
