HIGHPOINTER RICH WHITE 18 pts.
After a very impressive mid-season run of great golf, SIGLers are coming back to earth with an even split between those meeting or exceeding quota and those not hitting their mark.
As always though, a handful of players had very fine nights. After some recent steady play, Rich White lit it up this week with a front-side 37, good for 18 points and 1st Team and 1st Individual honors at +6. Rich was challenged by the resurgent Steve Danieli, also at +6, but Mr. White's par on 5 prevailed in a card-off.
The card was also kind to Rich and his partner Rick Keating (+1) as their +7 bested the same score by alternate Mayhem Mike Bradley (+4) and the pride of Medfa, Peter Frasca (+3) with the Rich/Rick combo's 3 points on the 1st hole making the difference.
When Closest to Pin is on the 2nd hole, it usually takes a pretty tight 3rd shot to take the prize, but for most of the day, Joe Curtis' 23'6" was holding up. But late in the day, Eric Aronson snuck one in to 13'11" to earn the CTP envelope. (Don't forget that next week CTP is the new-to-the-rotation 3rd hole.)
There were a respectable 13 birdies on the front this week, but only two will be compensated. Bob Bourne continues his super play and his birdie on 3 will earn him half the pot. The man who brings his own cart to the course with him is shaping up to join Freddie Lynn and Ichiro as the only guys to ever win Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player in the same season. (Bob is also the only guy who thinks that his quota should go down next week because he only got 17 points this week.)
And proving that good clean living pays off, Len Lima's birdie on the easy 9th hole will take the other half of the kitty. Birds on 2 (Bradley, Curtis), 4 (James, J. MacNeil), 6 (White, Svirsky, Jones), and 8 (Leonard, Danieli, Bourne, Turchette) will go unrewarded.
Not to be deterred by their smashed birdies on the front, Alex Turchette had an exclusive bird on 10 and TJ James did the same on 16 to split the $100 pot. Not surviving were 11 (Lozzi, Keating, Murphy), 13 (Doonan, Walsh), and 14 (Doonan, Curtis)
Hard luck players of the night were Mike Leonard whose outstanding +5 was not rewarded, and Joe Curtis and Bill Doonan who each had two birdies but nothing to show for it. Highpointer this week is Rich White with 18.
And finally, as we approach Week 17, it is not too early to start thinking about the year-end tournament. It will be held on Sunday, September 30th, with an 8:00 AM shotgun start followed by a banquet. On Week 19 there will be a sign-up sheet on the desk, and on Week 19 or 20, you must sign-up in order to be included. (We have to give Easton a number for playing purposes and dinner purposes.) It is requested that if you will not be playing, that you write "Not Playing" next to your name. If you are playing, please print your name next to your name. Any lines left blank after Week 20, will be converted to Not Playing status. Thanks.
See you next Tuesday.
