Like a flock of starlings, we all seem to change direction at the same time. After a couple of weeks of uninspired play, we exploded this Tuesday with a bushel of high scores. With only 14 players under quota, we had 21 who were +2 or better, with three of them at +5, four at +6, and a league-leading +8 turned in by rookie Bob Eaton who will earn 1st Individual with his first sub-40 round of the year. Four players vied for 2nd Individual at +6, with the red-hot Rick Keating winning a card-off over Dan Svirsky, Jim Egan, and Bino.

Not to be denied though, Mr. Egan used his +6 to lead the way to 1st Team honors with Martin Enright, who, no matter how high we put his quota, seems to get a +4 every week. Bob Eaton, with his super +8, was well positioned for some Team reward, and his partner Ted Meyer did his part with a solid +1 to take 2nd Team, prevailing in a card-off over Dan Svirsky (+6) and this humble hacker (+3).

The always steady Bob Loring lofted one in to 3'5" on the 9th hole, and that proved too tough to beat for the rest of the night, so Bubba will be dipping into the cigar box once again for his CTP reward.

We had a very healthy 16 birdies on the front, but with only two that will be rewarded with cash money. There must be something about going away on vacation that helps your golf game. Last week Saul Payne returned from an Alskan cruise to tear it up, and this week Rick Keating, fresh off playing Easton CC's sister course on the West Coast; Pebble Beach had a super night back home here with a crisp 78 by way of two frontside birds, and two more on the back. His birdies on 4 and 6 were the only two to survive, and he will be awarded the whole skins pot. Rick's total  $210 take for the night will help pay a portion of Pebble's greens fee, which for one round, is almost as much as a season's SIGL dues. Four players (Keating, Svirsky, Bino, Enright) had two birdies each on the front.

With so many outstanding scores this week, there were many superb performances that went uncompensated. Notable non-winners were Bino and Dan Svirsky at +6, Greg Paone, Mike McNeice, and Ed Reagan at +5, Terry Moore at +4, and John Tracy, Paul Raynard, and Larry Barry at +3. Highpointers for the night were Mike McNeice and Greg Paone with 17.

The back-nine birdie pool is growing in popularity, and this week we had $150 in the pot. For those in the pool, there were 12 birdies, and again, only two survived. Jim Shannon will be a back-nine winner two weeks in a row with his impressive birdie on 16, and Rick Keating finished off his superlative night in fine fashion with a winning bird on 18. Birdies on 12, 13, and 14 were not good enough to be skins. And much to his regret, one player had birds on 10, 14, and 15 (two survived) but was not in the pool. Ouch.

Rules and policy: You are not allowed to play any holes or practice on any holes prior to playing in the league competition. It is an unfair advantage, especially on the greens. Since we have a back nine skins competition, this also applies to the back nine. (See USGA Rule7-1).

And finally, the year-end tourney is fast approaching. Thanks to those who have signed the tourney sign-up sheet that was at the desk, with either a YES or a NO. However, there were still many who played Tuesday but did not sign the sheet either way. We will not be chasing down individual players trying to determine if you are playing or not. If you do not put something on the sheet, you will be considered a NO, and you will not be playing.

   See you next Tuesday.
