Week 5 brought a virtual duplicate of Week 4's strong play with 35 players exceeding quota, 10 right on their number, and 18 falling short. This week though we had a bigger handful of really outstanding numbers.
Proving that old men can still get it done, Johnny MacNeil finished an already good round with a super eagle on the 9th to finish with 22 points, a +9, and 1st Individual. Mighty Mike Silva, disappointed in his play to date, also exploded for an even par, 19 point performance, good for +8 and 2nd Individual. And Mike Wall keeps posting superlative numbers, which this week was even par, 20 points, and a 3rd Individual +6, which beat a great +6 by Paul Murphy.
Along with his talent, Mr. Wall has good fortune, as his partner John Tracy had his best night of the year with his +5, and their +11 will easily take 1st Team. Johnny Mac was well positioned to partake of a Team prize in addition to his 1st Individual, and his partner Len Lima hung in just enough for MacNeil/Lima to snag 2nd Team, in a tiebreaker over Paul Murphy's +6 and partner Mike Bradley's +2.
As noted, J. MacNeil eagled the 9th, and didn't even have to use the CTP tape measure because you can't get any closer to the pin than having your ball resting in the bottom of the cup. Nice work Johnny.
With all the good scoring, you'd think there would be more birdies, but there were a modest 12, in addition to the eagle. Andy Pryles started off on the right foot with a bird on 1, Big Bill Doonan had a winner on the 5th, his playing partner Steve Danieli followed suit on 6, and did we mention that John MacNeil had an eagle on 9?
In addition to the frontside winners, the following players had strong numbers but no reward, and all were at +4: Mathieson (9 straight pars), Haslam, Jurgy, TJ, Loring, and Lozzi.
Birdies that did not survive include: 2: (J. MacNeil, McNeice), 3 (M. Silva, Regan, Simmons), and the 8th (James, Wall). Not that it mattered, but Paul Murphy and Mr. Wall had birds on 9.
We had a 30-man $150 pot for the Backnine Skins pool and three winning putts. Joe Curtis, fresh off the Florida circuit, got on the board quickly with his sole birdie on 10, Bill Doonan added to his frontside skin with another on 15, and Steady Steve Lozzi rolled one in on 16. The 13th hole went down again with Mathieson, Svirsky, and Dugan. Finn and McGarry will cancel each other out on 14, and Nick Dejesus' 3 will cancel Mike Silva's on 18.
And finally, when entering the Back Nine Skins pool, please remember to write your name and the time on the sheet provided. Thanks.
See you next Tuesday.
