WEEK 13 CTP 2ND HOLE
The weather threatened but didn't dare break up our run of great Tuesdays although staying in the shade helped to get through the round. Scores were a bit above normal with 22 players exceeding quota, 15 hitting their number exactly, and 16 falling short.
There was a handful of big plus scores and they were led by Greg Paone's big night. With three birds, five pars and a bogey, it doesn't take a math teacher to figure out that that comes out to a two under par 34 (career low?), a mighty 23 points, and a winning +9 for 1st Individual.
We had a backup at +7 for 2nd, among Dan McGarry, Chris Sullivan, Jamie Gormley, and Bob Shannon, and Jamie settled that quickly with his birdie on 1, his first of the year coming at an opportune time.
Mr. Gormley and his +7 also had the good fortune to have a solid partner this week so Scott Silvia's strong +3 will give the duo an outstanding +10 and 1st Team. Being paired with standout Greg Paone, Eric Aronson didn't hurt the cause with an Even, so they took 2nd Team with +9.
On the 9th hole, we had the rare tie for Closest to Pin with Greg Willard and Mike Wall both recording 8'10" and so the prize will be split.
We had a plentiful 16 birdies on the front with three paying off.
Jamie Gormley's 3 on the opening hole held up, Greg Paone's bird on 5 paid off, and Chris Sullivan, who had a career high 12 points bagged a skin on the 7th hole.
Covered holes: 2nd (Paone, McNeice, Walsh), 4th (Wall, Aronson), 6th (Musgrove, L. Silva), 8th (Paone, J. MacNeil) and the 9th (B. Shannon, G. Willard, Wall, L. Silva). The 3rd was the only hole without a circle.
The Back Nine birdie pool had 26 entrants and four winners: Greg Willard on 10, Mark Nolan, the 14th, Alex Turchette 15, and Bill Doonan on 18. Birdies on 12 (M. Silva, Lozzi, Regan), 13 (M. Silva, Silvia, G. Willard, D. Willard) and 16 (M. Silva, Mark Nolan, Sullivan, Turchette).
Notables who did not cash were Dan McGarry and Bob Shannon at +7, Wayne Musgrove at +6, and Lou Silva and Steve Dasaro at +4. Highpointer was Greg Paone.
And in the Grind It Out Dept.: Mark Spears had the hardest earned point you can imagine on the 3rd hole Tuesday: First tee shot OB left. Second tee ball in woods on right, punch out to fairway, now laying 4. Sky it over the water and drop it in the hole for a 5. Nice.
As we start the second half, welcome aboard to newcomers Bob Shannon and Bill McIntyre.
Three times in the last two weeks, players have asked how to collect their winnings from the previous week: We thought it was pretty clear all year: If you have an envelope coming from the previous week, tell the desk clerk when you sign in, and he will give it to you.
And finally, this weekend brings Massachusetts amateur golf's premier event with the two-day Easton Country Club's club championship. Good luck to all SIGLers!
See you next Tuesday.
MR. PAONE, I CAME UP WITH 23
OKAY THANKS SALLY
