We are really starting to hit our mid-season stride with another night of outstanding scoring, with most players exceeding quota. For the second week in a row, we have had a couple of golfers post really impressive numbers. Taking 1st Individual this week, it was the one and only (thank God) John MacNeil who followed last week's 18 points with a fabulous 23 points in Week 8 with three birds, five pars, and a bogey for a super -2 score of 34. Also remaining hot as a pistol is the pride of Everett, Steve Lozzi, who followed his own 18 points last week with a noteworthy 20 points this week for 2nd Individual, the first time ever that 20 points did not win the top honor.
John and Steve also had partners that were just good enough to snag 1st and 2nd Team honors, too. This week, J Mac happened to get paired with brother Ed, who had a fine +3 himself, so the bros will take home the 1st Team reward. Steve Mattes added a +1 to Mr. Lozzi's +8 to come in at +9, which was equal to the fine pair of Steve Dasaro (alt) +5 and Rick Walsh at +4. Maybe because sometimes two Steves are better than one, Lozzi and Mattes prevailed in a card-off with two bogeys on the first hole.
Early on, good guy Dan Svirsky shaped a beauty into the 3rd hole to 5 feet. And that stood up for most of the day. But with Closest to the Pin, less is Moore as Terry snuck one up to 4'10" to beat Dan by inches.
There were a healthy 14 birdies (six on the 9th alone) but only three will pay. John MacNeil adds to his treasure with a bird on 3, Johnny's playing partner Alex Turchette gets on the money board for the first time with a nice birdie on the 6th, and J Mac piles it on with another on 7. The 2nd (Lozzi, G. Willard), 4th (Lozzi, TJ, Musgrove), and McNeice, J. MacNeil, Thompson, Babyak, Dasaro, and Walsh humbled the 9th hole.
We had a season high 23 players get in on the back nine skins pool, and had an impressive 13 birdies produced. Four poolers will get rewarded for their surviving skins: Joe Curtis, like his bud Alex gets on the board for the first time with a bird on 10, Rick Keating sunk a winner on 11, McNeice got rewarded for one of his many birds on 16, and Peter Frasca finished off his night with a 3 on 18.
Covered holes were 12 (McNeice, TJ), 13 (McNeice, Lima, Walsh, Keating, Thompson), and 14 (McNeice, Curtis).
As noted, there were many outstanding scores, and many of them did not make the money board. TJ had his best outing of the season with a +6 and a 78. In addition, Steve Dasaro and Steve Peterson had superb +5s but no reward, and Mark Nolan, Greg Willard, and Rick Walsh all came home with +4 but no more.
And a special tip of the cap to Mike McNeice who followed a fine 38 on the front with a super duper 34 on the back (four more birdies) to record his best round ever. Nice job, Michael.
And finally, we have gotten a couple of inquiries about a credit for the second half dues because we "lost" three weeks in the first half. We didn't lose three weeks; we are just behind three weeks from the original schedule because of the three postponements. We didn't cancel three weeks, we postponed them. The plan is (and there are still enough weeks) to play a full 20-week season before the year-end tourney. So the regular amount of dues ($335 or $65) will be due on Week 11.
See you next Tuesday. (No really)
