Well okay, it was a Tuesday and the course was actually open for play, so we had that going for us (which was nice) but man it was hot. Despite the swelter, attendance was strong, although many groups stopped after nine. (Although rumor has that two groups played 27.)
Whether it was the weather or not, but after a couple of weeks of super scoring, the group reverted to the mean (the Law of Averages always wins out in the end) with average scoring, and a very large number of competitors hitting their quota right on the number.
Last year's runaway best scorer, Bobby Bourne, has been battling
injuries all year, so it was nice to see the ace find his old form with a super two-birdie 35, good for 21 points and a winning +9.
Jim Shannon's game is starting to come around as the ad man posted a season best 40 for a healthy +6, and good for 2nd Individual.
It was nice to see Mike Bradley back after an extended absence with a bad back, and he wasted no time getting back in the money. Mayhem contributed a fine +3, thanks to a bird on 9 which complemented Mr. Shannon's +6 to take 1st Team at +9.
B. Bourne happened to get paired with his playing partner and cart mate, so he was able to witness first hand as Peter Frasca did nothing to contribute to the cause with a -2. But Bob's super +9 was good enough to garner 2nd Team honors at +7, and so Bob will proudly and Peter will humbly accept cash envelopes.
On the Closest to Pin 4th Hole, Big Bill Doonan went out early and posted an impressive 6'10" (no, he was not writing down his height) and for the rest of the day, there were no contenders who were able to best that fine mark. And, for the ninth straight week this year, Bill won Tallest Golfer honors.
After the first, every hole on the front was birdied, but only two were exclusives. Dan Svirsky will be rewarded for the sole bird on 2, and Bill Doonan will split the skins pot with his playing partner Dan with his birdie conversion on the 4th. Uncompensated birdies were had on 3 (Bourne, Finn), 5 (Bourne, Curtis, Mark Nolan), 6 (Russell, Hrenko), 7 (Fay, G. Willard), 8 (Aronson, Musgrove, Simmons), and 9 (Bradley, Moore).
As noted, collectively scores generally hovered right on quota or one point off quota in each direction. However, in addition to the cash winners, there was a handful of superb performances that will not be rewarded with envelopes: The hard-luck Terry Moore again had a great night at +5, and Hrenko, Humphrey, Turchette, Russell, and Nolan (Mark) all had superb +4s, but to no avail.
Bob Bourne was easily highpointer with 21, the fourth time in four weeks that we have had a 20+ point performance from one of our young .... I mean old guns. And speaking of age, a special tip of the cap to Mr. Bourne who very recently has TWICE shot below his age with scores of 74. Good stuff Robert.
With so many golfers playing only nine holes, we had a surprising 26 entries in the back nine skins pool, with eight birdies sunk on three holes. The 11th was covered (Lozzi, E. MacNeil, Shannon) as was the 13th (McNeice, Svirsky, E. MacNeil, Murphy). And that leaves only one standing ... and the winner is the hot Steve Lozzi who will collect $130. (And for the player who birdied the 14th hole, a $5 investment would have returned $65 if you had only jumped into the pool.)
See you next Tuesday.
COME ON, JUST JUMP IN ALREADY!

We are really starting to hit our mid-season stride with another night of outstanding scoring, with most players exceeding quota. For the second week in a row, we have had a couple of golfers post really impressive numbers. Taking 1st Individual this week, it was the one and only (thank God) John MacNeil who followed last week's 18 points with a fabulous 23 points in Week 8 with three birds, five pars, and a bogey for a super -2 score of 34. Also remaining hot as a pistol is the pride of Everett, Steve Lozzi, who followed his own 18 points last week with a noteworthy 20 points this week for 2nd Individual, the first time ever that 20 points did not win the top honor.
John and Steve also had partners that were just good enough to snag 1st and 2nd Team honors, too. This week, J Mac happened to get paired with brother Ed, who had a fine +3 himself, so the bros will take home the 1st Team reward. Steve Mattes added a +1 to Mr. Lozzi's +8 to come in at +9, which was equal to the fine pair of Steve Dasaro (alt) +5 and Rick Walsh at +4. Maybe because sometimes two Steves are better than one, Lozzi and Mattes prevailed in a card-off with two bogeys on the first hole.
Early on, good guy Dan Svirsky shaped a beauty into the 3rd hole to 5 feet. And that stood up for most of the day. But with Closest to the Pin, less is Moore as Terry snuck one up to 4'10" to beat Dan by inches.
There were a healthy 14 birdies (six on the 9th alone) but only three will pay. John MacNeil adds to his treasure with a bird on 3, Johnny's playing partner Alex Turchette gets on the money board for the first time with a nice birdie on the 6th, and J Mac piles it on with another on 7. The 2nd (Lozzi, G. Willard), 4th (Lozzi, TJ, Musgrove), and McNeice, J. MacNeil, Thompson, Babyak, Dasaro, and Walsh humbled the 9th hole.
We had a season high 23 players get in on the back nine skins pool, and had an impressive 13 birdies produced. Four poolers will get rewarded for their surviving skins: Joe Curtis, like his bud Alex gets on the board for the first time with a bird on 10, Rick Keating sunk a winner on 11, McNeice got rewarded for one of his many birds on 16, and Peter Frasca finished off his night with a 3 on 18.
Covered holes were 12 (McNeice, TJ), 13 (McNeice, Lima, Walsh, Keating, Thompson), and 14 (McNeice, Curtis).
As noted, there were many outstanding scores, and many of them did not make the money board. TJ had his best outing of the season with a +6 and a 78. In addition, Steve Dasaro and Steve Peterson had superb +5s but no reward, and Mark Nolan, Greg Willard, and Rick Walsh all came home with +4 but no more.
And a special tip of the cap to Mike McNeice who followed a fine 38 on the front with a super duper 34 on the back (four more birdies) to record his best round ever. Nice job, Michael.
And finally, we have gotten a couple of inquiries about a credit for the second half dues because we "lost" three weeks in the first half. We didn't lose three weeks; we are just behind three weeks from the original schedule because of the three postponements. We didn't cancel three weeks, we postponed them. The plan is (and there are still enough weeks) to play a full 20-week season before the year-end tourney. So the regular amount of dues ($335 or $65) will be due on Week 11.
See you next Tuesday. (No really)

Well, the week off apparently did us a world of good, as SIGLers
had the best collective week in memory, with an incredible 25 golfers who posted +3 or better. The course has really dried out (no more wet shoes every round Teddy) and the greens are running smooth and true, so that helped scores, too.
The always steady Steve Lozzi had his best night of the year with 18 points, producing a super +7. (And shot a crisp 77.) Rookie Bill Simmons, just trying to catch up to his money machine playing partner Ned Babyak, also exploded for his best night of the year, tying Steve at +7. Steady Steve's bogey on 1 was good enough to take the tie-breaker for 1st.
Johnny MacNeil continues his superlative play and recorded his own 18 points and +6. And again, it paid to be an alternate as Mark Spear stepped in for a no show with a fine +3 to pair up with J. Mac to take 1st Team honors at +9.
There was a real traffic jam for 2nd Team with five teams tied at +7: McGarry/Spears alt., Keating/Spears alt., Lozzi/Silvia, Hrenko/Bourne, Simmons/Doonan. (Try not to tie so much; it took me a half hour to figure out the tie-breaker.) But the team that made it through the pile-up was the honorable duo of John Hrenko at +5 and Bob Bourne with a +2.
Ed Finn continues his envelope collection routine, this week with a winning approach on 2 to 12'8" to take CTP cash.
For all the really great scoring, surprisingly there were only nine birdies on the front. J. MacNeil will be rewarded for his lead-off birdie on the 1st hole, Greg Willard will collect for a fine bird on 7, and the productive Bob Loring will gladly take the cash for his 3 on the 8th. The 3rd hole (Payne, Simmons, Aronson) and 9 (Fay, Ed MacNeil, Lozzi) were smashed.
There are too many players at an outstanding +3 to mention, but hard-luckers this week who had great nights but no pay-off are Saul Payne at +5, and John Tracy, Rick Keating, and Mike Leonard, all at +4. High points this week was 18, earned by Steve Lozzi and John MacNeil.
There was improved participation in the Back Nine birdie pool, and seven birdies were sunk, with two getting paid. Ed MacNeil will be picking up an envelope for his winning birdie on 12, and Bob Loring (I told you he was productive) adds to his stash with a 2 on 14. The 13th hole was smashed (Doonan and Thompson) and the 17th was cancelled out by Keating, Lozzi, and Finn.
And again, in Easton CC tournament play, SIGLers continue to shine with 12 league members on teams in the money at the recent Red, White, and Blue event.
And finally, welcome aboard to newcomer Bill Humphrey, who will hopefully turn the dynamic duo of Shannon and Thompson into a terrific trio.
See you next Tuesday.
