So let's just go with the "It's still early" excuse to account for our substandard first night performance. Out of 56 golfers who teed it up (out of a roster of 64), there were but eight who exceeded their quota. Optional excuses include 1) It was too cold out, 2) The rough was too high, and 3) It was that time of the month.
So almost everyone who exceeded quota won some dough. Leading the pack was Brian Murphy, who barely swung a club all winter, but exploded out of the gate with a +6 on the back of 2 birdies. For the first time, we will now pay second place for both Team and Individual. Rookie Martin Enright kicked off his SIGL career with a snappy +5 to take second place. With Mr. Enright hailing from the Emerald Isle and affable Terry Moore from Merry Ole England, SIGL is adding some international flavor.
We had a tie for Team at +6 between Ryan Burke/Dan Szczurko and Brian Murphy/John Hrenko, with Ryan and Dan winning in a card-off. Bill Doonan continues his winning ways from last year with a crisp approach on 2 to 5'9" to take Closest to Pin. (Bill, don't feel bad about missing the putt because it would not have lived ayway, but Murphy says thanks.)
We had the rare birdie skins straight with winners on holes 2,3,4,5,and 6 by Brian Murphy, Easy Ed MacNeil, Lucky Lenny Lima, Ryan Trigger Burke, and the great Bobby Jones. The 9th hole was thoroughly covered.
Highpointer for the night was Brian Murphy with 15. And aside from golfers already mentioned above, the only other notable was rookie Dan McGarry at +2.
Housekeeping: 1) Make sure you sign in before playing, 2) Include last names on cards. With 64 players, we have a lot of Toms, Dicks, and Harrys so to speak, and it gets confusing, 3) Print names and numbers on the card clearly. Some cards are almost unreadable, 4) To whom it may concern: Bring payment next Tuesday.
Okay, let's turn it around next week, if only so there won't be so much 19th hole bitching and moaning.
See you next Tuesday.
THERE'S NO CRYING IN GOLF!
