Hard to believe that we are already into the second half of the season. A great night to play golf, with the usual dose of high winds in the evening, great looking fairways, although the greens were a little fuzzy and slow. Good turnout, but again very disappointing results, with only 13 individuals and five teams on the positive side of the quota ledger.
Easily the star of the day this week is Ed Finn who broke through with his best night of the year with 19 points, three birdies, Individual at +5, Closest to Pin on 9 at 5 ft., good for a $104 payoff. Also impressive were Mark Spears (+4) and Brian Murphy (+3) who partnered to take Team at +7.
Other than Big Ed's three birds, there were only eight others on the night; Dawn Weber will collect for a nice one on 2, Bob Loring celebrated his birthday by getting on the money board with a birdie on 3, and Ed F. will be rewarded for birds on 1 and 5. Holes 4, 8, and 9 were covered.
Surprisingly, with close to 50 golfers teeing it up, the only other blog-worthy performance was turned in by Ray Larrabee at +2.
The Easton C.C. match-play championship is coming down the stretch with SIGL still well represented. In the semi-final round of the B Division, Bob Frick had one of the greatest comebacks you'll find anywhere. Down four holes with only seven to go, and with no phone booth within sight, Bob ran behind a tree and emerged wearing his boyhood Superman costume (it still fits) and leaped over his opponent in a single bound to win the match with a hole to spare. Greg Paone also advanced to the final with a hard-won victory over SIGL associate (he's not a made man yet) Lou Silva when he chipped in from the hazard on 16 to close it out. So the final came down to Paone vs. Frick and their exciting match was played during league play on Tuesday. And the winner is ..... Bob Frick, 4 and 3. Congrats, Bob. The endorsement deals alone should easily cover your second half dues. Also, tune in next Tuesdaywhen SIGLers T.J. James and Todd Texeira square off for the C Division title. (How is an 8 handicap in the C Division?)
After conferring with our league accounting firm of Two Books, Inc., we have seen fit to raise the weekly prizes to $25. And speaking of money, anyone who has not paid second half dues by the end of the night next Tuesday, will not be eligible for any prize money that night.
And finally, as you know, we lost former player and long-time friend Dave La Rosa this week, after a long illness. Please keep Dave and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
See you next Tuesday.
