Well, we're at the quarter pole of the season, and the weather has yet to break. Another cold and miserable Tuesday, feeling more like late November than late May. The next time someone says, "Yeah, but I love the change of seasons in New England" I'm gonna take off my two sweaters and rain parka and strangle him with one of them.
Scores this week were all over the lot, with plenty of impressive rounds but also many that were less than stellar. Those who scored well must have been hitting fairways and greens because the rough, especially up around the green, has been especially punitive lately. Breaking out this week was rookie Sean Costello who had a 37 with three birdies, good for a fantastic 23 points and ....oops, sorry, that was on the back nine. Sean, sorry, you were two weeks late, but that was one impressive nine holes, nonetheless. Unfortunately, Sean's front side performance didn't even earn the big guy enough cash for a post-round Irish coffee, extra whipped cream, please.
Starting his comeback from various ailments and injuries, Frank La Rosa is back in the spotlight as Individual winner at +5 and high-pointer with 16. John Tracy was solid at +2 and picked the right dance partner in Fast Frank to snag the Team win at +7. Other notable rounds were carded by neighbors Mike Kelly and Ed Burke, and also Greg Willard at +4, and by Brian Murphy, Paul Begley, Dana Willard, and partners in crime Joe Curtis and Alex Turchette at +3.
Ed Finn was looking good for Closest to the Pin on the 8th hole at 9' 11", but Eric Aronson came along and laced one in four inches closer to snatch the cash from Ed's grasp. I hope you noticed (how could you not?) the new Closest to the Pin marker on 8, care of Frank La Rosa. I'm not saying it's a bit oversized, but for the rest of the summer, on Tuesdays pilots will be able to use it as a visual mark on their approach into Logan.
We had an uninspiring seven birdies on the night, with only two surviving. Again, it is the upstart rookies who seem to schooling us veterans, and this week Jared Cacciapaglia continues his torrid and profitable pace with a birdie on the 3rd hole and it is nice to see Ed Burke get on the money board with a bird on 6. Birdies that did not live were on 4 (Bino, Tracy, and Walsh) and 9 (McNeice and D. Willard).
Misc.: Unclaimed property department: Steve Peterson you've got mail, and it's getting stale. Also, the year-end tourney on Sunday, September 28th will an 8:00 AM shotgun start, instead of our traditional 11:00 AM time.
Comings and Goings: Although he's been seen on TV and on billboards, the in the flesh version of our favorite car man, Jim Egan has not been seen or heard from all year. We're now happy to report that our milk carton campaign has paid dividends, and the Mustached One is now back in the SIGL fold.
Fed up with this charming New England change of season (bad, badder, baddest) weather, Easy Mike McNeice is heading south to beautiful Aruba for some well-deserved R&R.Next Tuesday, though, Mike has promised to phone in his score from one of the courses on the island, which, by sheer coincidence, bills itself as Southern Caribbean's premier wedding and golf destination.
And, after a distinguished career working in children's clothes, which always set him apart from the guys wearing business suits, recently retired Bob Loring is now playing so much golf that he has apparently injured himself. He gamely showed up at the course, but was unable to answer the bell. Be careful Steve Lozzi or you will be next.
And finally, another late scratch was newcomer Ryan Burke, who after a wild weekend of debauchery in Las Vegas, (this might not be true, but rumor has it that Ryan and his buddies actually stole Mike Tyson's tiger, and don't even remember doing it!), has been sidelined with a case of "food poisoning." Good one, Ryan; I used to use that one all the time myself.
See you next Tuesday.
