McNeice & Posse

This is our course...you boys just mosey on!!!

Recap Week 5

A beautiful night at Easton, the greens were running, and apparently we had the flatsticks working because there were an incredible 19 birdies, 17 of which were smashed. Holes 8 and 9 were birdied 13 times. Wow, to the uninitiated casual observer it probably looked like we are actually good.
Dawn Weber continues to impress and came right out of the gate with a nifty birdie on 1 that lived. Everyone in Ed Finn's threesome put it within 10 feet to that tough back corner pin on 6 but Ed was the one who sank the putt to take half the birdie pool, with a liberal sprinkling of side-match cash. Newcomer Steve Lozzi made his winning debut with Individual honors at +6 and Team honors went to John Fay, +5 and Dave Peters, +2. (It pays to be an alternate.)

Mike Kelly was ready to put $20 dollars in his pocket for a 2' 7" closest to the pin on 9 but Dave Naimo snatched it from him when his third shot settled 6" inches from the hole.

Rick Walsh had the most Jekyll and Hyde round this year by starting off with 1 point after five holes, but finishing par, par, birdie, birdie for 13 points and a +4. Other notable rounds include Mark Nolan and Johnny MacNeil at +5 and Mike Nolan and newcomer Paul Begley at +4.

For newcomers on how your quota is calculated: Like the regular handicap system, your quota is the average of your best scores, not all of your scores. The top 50% of your scores are the only ones calculated. Therefore, if you have a terrible night that does not necessarily mean that your quota will go down the next week. If you need any further clarification, please contact our Customer Service Department at their unlisted telephone number.

And finally, Mike McNeice is widely regarded as one of the most easy going gentlemen this side of the Mississippi, but even Mike reached his limit after 14 holes of excruciatingly slow play and let the off-the-streeters in front of him have it with both barrels. Not thinking that there was anything wrong with being 3 to 4 holes behind, and hoping to make the SIGL website recap, they returned fire with a profanity-laden barrage not fit to be repeated to a co-ed audience. It got bad enough that from Pine Oaks was heard, "Can you keep it down? We're trying to play golf over here!" (No kidding.) Mike seems to think that the major culprit was a left-handed Argentinian, which explains alot. (Only kidding, some of my best friends are left-handed Argentinians.) Further pleasantries were exchanged not only for the remainder of the round but right into the parking lot. Word is that at that point Vince McMahon arrived, grabbed the porch PA mike and yelled, "Let's get ready to rumble!" But one icy glare from Billy Karas and the miscreants were heard to say, "We want no part of that crazy Greek," and were last seen with their tails between their legs rolling
out of the parking lot, never to be seen in these parts again.

Just another day at Easton Country Club.

   See you next Tuesday

Slow play

As Carter would say to Pyle...move it move it move it...slow play is not allowed

Recap Week 4

It was a sunny beautiful day...Oh wait that was last week. It was a cold windy rainy crappy day that engulfed the Easton CC with thunder and lighting not far away. Two members were seen running off the course with echos of "Run Forest Run". The rest of us braved the conditions as we've had to so often in the past. This was a fine way to welcome our newest member Paul Begley.
Mark Spears navigated his way around the course and collected top honors with a +5 and collected on team money with John Macneil who came in even.
Our fearless leader just missed and eagle on 2, but easily tapped in his birdie putt which held to get him on the money board. He almost had CTP when he stuck it to 6'4" only to have his playing partner Ed Finn top him with 5'9". Ed had a bad day overall, but you never know in this league it only takes that one birdie or approach shot to collect money and ease the pain.
Dave Weber continues to play solid golf no matter what the conditions are, with his 3rd straight plus on his quota.
Jurgy makes a quick recovery off the DL with a little help from his therapist...he heard something pop in his back in a good way and hopefully that did the trick.
Shot of the day goes to Mike Bradley who from 220 yards against the wind on 18 hits a bullet to 6' and sinks the birdie putt.
Slow play is not allowed in this league...play ready golf!!!!
LB will be back with the recap next week if he survives his marathon of golf in Maine.

See you Tuesday

Recap Week 3

At the beginning of last year, we seemed to have rain every Tuesday, but apparently this year paying the good-weather premium to Easton has been well worth it as we have had another nice night to tee it up. The greens are coming back from last week's aeration, and other than the instant new water hazard in the middle of the 7th fairway, conditions were again outstanding.

The third week marked the debut of the "Don Dillon Show" starring Don Dillon, who almost ran the table. Don had a career performance with a 38, two birdies, and a total of 17 points, good for a +8 and individual honors. He teamed up with trusty sidekick Peter Jaffe who had a +3 for an unbeatable team at +11.

An unfortunate victim of circumstance was Larry Anshewitz who shot 37, good for 18 points and a plus +6, and had a birdie on 5, but who walked away empty-handed. Larry took the news that his impressive performance went for naught in his usual reasoned and philosophical manner. (Not!)

There were seven birdies for the  night, but, you guessed it, Don Dillon had the only one that lived (3rd hole) and took the whole $100 pot. We just missed having a complete birdie pool carryover, as Bob Frick's valiant birdie bid on 3 missed by inches. Birdies that were smashed were the 5th (Anshewitz and Dave Weber), the 8th (Dillon and Barry), and the 9th hole (Aronson and Blake Willard).

Closest to the pin on 6 was snagged by Dan Szczurko who stiffed it to within 5 feet to a deep and dangerous pin. However, Dan was not able to close the deal with a birdie, which cost him $50.

Word is that Mike Bradley is still driving aimlessly around the course looking for his pitching wedge. (Mayhem Mike reminded me of Warren in the movie There's Something About Mary - "Have you seen my baseball?") Nice to have Bino back and good to see John Tracy finally show, but sorry to hear that Greg Jurgilewicz will be on the disabled list indefinitely with a herniated disk. Get well soon, Jurgy. And a hearty S.I.G.L. welcome to new newcomers Mike Fay and Tom Nolan. For those planning ahead, the year-end tourney is scheduled for Sunday, September 22nd at 11:00 AM

And now a word from our crack Enforcement Division: All putts that are for a quota point or more must be holed. (A 6 inch gimme leads to a 1 foot gimme to a 2 foot gimme, etc. etc.) Any conceded putts will result in disqualification for all players involved. (Please be aware that the Division's Black Ops Unit has discreetly placed high resolution surveillance cameras around all of the front-nine greens.)

And finally, word has spread through the golfosphere that apparently whacky Johnny MacNeil aced the 16th hole on Tuesday night ! Congrats John on joining an exclusive club. I'm sure that John couldn't wait to burst through the clubhouse doors and regale his countless fans with the story of his latest exploit when ..... he suddenly remembered that timeless golf tradition of setting up the bar, and so for the first time in his life John MacNeil  became the  Quiet Man, and maybe we'll never know for sure.

   See you next Tuesday !

Recap Week 2

Our wizard of the web, Bino, is temporarily out of commission, currently relaxing behind a pina colada or six at Sloppy Joe's in Key West so the web page, with new quotas, etc., will be updated if or when Johnny returns.

If you thought last week's weather was good, this week's was even better, and course conditions were pristine, with slightly slower greens. So this sets up for a great night for scoring, right? Ah...no. For some reason (we suck?) collectively, it was one of  the worst nights in a while. Of 24 teams teeing it up, only four bested quota. For the first time in memory, we had two players, Anonymous I and Anonymous II, who came up with big fat goose eggs, and of the four paper alternates, three were -5 each, and the only reason the fourth didn't go negative was because he didn't show up.  I hope the chronic quota complainers, (come on, you know who you are), don't use this as an opportunity to turn up the whine meter. Solution: play better.

However, for every rule there are exceptions, so we did have a few stellar rounds amidst the suckage. Dawn Weber handed off the winning baton to mate Dave, who posted a +6 to win individual. Teams honors went to Dave Naimo, with an outstanding +5, and Alex Turchette, who is not too proud to accept cash for a sub par performance. Mike McNeice continues to play good steady golf. This time the Big Easy cashed with a nifty closest to pin on the 4th hole, carving it in to within 10 feet to a tough pin placement. (Actually, all the pins at Easton are tough lately, but we need the challenge.)

There were a total of seven  birdies, three of which paid. Eric Aronson rolled one in on 6. Rick Walsh, the last man in America without a cell phone and proud of it damn it, stiffed one on 8 for an easy bird, and newcomer Dr. Payne filled the cavity on the 9th green with a nice birdie putt to earn $33; not his customary rate, but he'll take it. Steve DaSaro and Ed Finn cancelled each other on the 2nd hole, while Captain Naimo and Dave Weber did the same on 3.

   Housekeeping:

Last group out please remember to bring in the closest to the pin marker.

For the golfer who said he can't open the webpage, please e-mail Bino, after he sobers up, with the problem.

Easton was very pleased with our improved tee time management. So whatever you did Tuesday, please continue.

Unclaimed property:  Winning envelopes can be found in the cigar box at the bar. Steve Peterson, you have one waiting for you.

We're happy to report that we don't have to get ugly next week, because all but one player has paid up, and he had a legitimate excuse: his dog ate his checkbook!

   See you next Tuesday

Recap Week 1

The 33rd season of the Stoughton Industrial Golf League got off to a splendid start with perfect weather and outstanding course conditions. To save money, we decided to cancel the planned Opening Day parade down Purchase Street, so apologies to Billy Karas who, word has it, went out and bought a comically large drum major's hat and matching baton for the occasion. Bill, I hope you saved the receipt.

A hearty welcome to newcomers Saul Payne, Steve Lozzi, Michael Fay, Larry Anshewitz, Dave Weber, and Dawn Weber. Dawn wasted no time coming out of the gate by capturing individual honors in addition to team honors with our favorite TV car salesman, Jim Egan. Nice to see Steve Peterson come back strong with a closest to the pin on 2 and a birdie that lived. All-world moneymaker Frank LaRosa wasted no time getting back on the money list by stiffing his approach to four feet on the first hole, and getting a share of the birdie pool. After barely touching a club since last October, steady Mike McNeice had a crisp 38 with a bird on five and was only two over par after 14, until the tough finishing holes took their toll on an otherwise stellar round. And Terry Moore kicked off the new season with two birdies, one of which paid cash money.

Rick Walsh just missed an ace of four, with the ball coming to rest a foot and a half dead behind the hole. Rick's specialty being 18' putts, he nailed the birdie, but it was heavily covered later.

   Housekeeping:

Thanks to all you prompt payers. Your money will be prudently invested in Iraqi dinars throughout the season to ensure plenty of prize money throughout the year and for a big year-end tourney, maybe even with a box lunch. For those who haven't paid yet, first half deadline is next week. Newcomers: please make sure to tally quota points before submitting card.

Easton C.C. has asked us to clarify a few things:  Public players teeing off at 3:26 or earlier will be charged an extra $8.00 greens fee at the desk. Carts at 3:26 or earlier are $15.  Beginning with the 3:34 tee time, there is no additional greens fee and  carts are $11.

Easton has also asked that we try to bunch up our tee offs a little tighter: Tuesday, for example, no league groups went out between 3:54 and 4:26, and this is after Easton turned away off-the-street golfers because these times are blocked out for us. Technically, we only have the tee until 4:36, so you late groups are going to have arrive earlier than you have been.
