   Wow, hasn't anyone ever played the back before? And even if you have, the back nine at Easton is not exactly Bethpage from the tips, if you know what I mean. But based on the scores turned in this week, you would think so. Setting a season low, there were only six teams, and only 14 individuals in positive territory against quota, with one group actually submitting a card with the editorial comment "EMBARRASSING!!!" scrawled across it. Embarrassing was that 11 teams were -4 or worse with five of them being -7.  

   Oblivious to the poor golf swirling all around him though was one lone star this week, and that was one Steve Danieli who bucked all trends with his super +8 to easily take 1st Individual. John Tracy was also one of the few who passed muster this week, and his +4 will be good for 2nd Individual, after besting the gritty Martin Enright in a card-off.

   You would think that Mr. Danieli would be well positioned to cash in on Team honors, but no, Steve's alternate partner chipped in with a crisp -6 (you know who you are) to bring his team back to the pack. Stepping up was the still gritty Marty Enright whose +4 was paired with a fine +1 contribution from Willard the Younger to take the 1st Team prize with +5. Fine fellows Ted Meyer (+3) and Wayne Musgrove (E) will accept 2nd Team money with their +3.

     John Tracy added to his winnings with a fine approach on 14 to take Closest to the Pin at 10'8", narrowly beating out Mike McNeice.

     There were only eight birdies on the night, and none survived. That means that next week's pool will hold a juicy $240 in cash money. Enright and Aronson cancelled each other out on 10, and Szczurko, J. MacNeil, and D. Wiilard did the same on 12. The still hard-luck Dan Szczurko has now birdied three weeks in a row, with nothing to show for it. The 14th hole surrendered to the hot blades of Danieli and Meyer.

     There weren't alot of other notables to report. Aside from those winning cash, the only other two to earn a shout-out are Dana Willard and Eddie MacNeil at +3. And yes, it's true, Steve Danieli was highpointer with 14. Way to go, Steve!

    The back nine birdie pool was voided this week, because groups played different "back nines" depending upon when the front nine reopened. Anyone who deposited a pool envelope will already be in for next week.

    And finally. the season is fast coming to a close with only four weeks of competition left. The year-end tourney is on Sunday, October 1st. In a couple of weeks, we will put out a sign-up sheet for the tourney. In order to be included in the tourney, you MUST SIGN UP. If you do not sign up by Tuesday, Sept. 26th, you will not be playing. We have to give Easton a firm number of players and diners, and we have to put together teams at that time. We will not rejigger the teams and change the numbers with Easton at the last minute to accommadate anyone who has not signed up. "I just figured that you knew I was playing" will not cut it.

   Although he is still not able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, John Bino Carrabino on Tuesday was really super, man. With the newly created back-nine birdie pool allowing for greater potential weekly winnings, Bino wasted no time in establishing a new all-time one-week payout record of $202,  eclipsing the previous records of $185, set by Rich Harding earlier this year.

   Having his best round of the year, John posted 14 points, good for a hardy +6, which was paired with a solid +1 by automobile tycoon Jim Egan. Their +7 turned out to be a winner, as Bino and Jim take 1st Team honors. Right on their heels was Bino's playing partner, newcomer, and all round good fella Ed Leach, who carded his own best round with an outstanding  +5.  World traveller Alex Turchette was home long enough on Tuesday to post his own +1, so Alex and Ani, I mean Alex and Eddie, will accept the 2nd place prize.

  Not to be overlooked in this week's hit parade is solid citizen Mark Spears who posted a great +7 to take 1st Individual. Nice job, Mark. And Bino's +6 will secure 2nd place.

  Jim Shannon came through on the 6th hole with a handsome shot to 6'5", crushing Martin Enright's life-long dream of being an SIGL consecutive week winner of Closest to the PIn.

  Although there were many good scores posted on Tuesday, there were only 7 birdies on the league front. The 2nd hole was smashed (Tracy, Lyons, Silva), and for the third week in a row, the difficult 6th was also covered. (Turchette, Spears). So for paying birdies, that left Bino's on 3 and partner Ed Leach's birdie on 4 as the only survivors, and they will pay $60 each.

  Notable perfomances that did not yield any cash were John Tracy at +5, Steve Lozzi (+4), Chris Sullivan (+3), and Eddie MacNeil, John Hrenko, and Terry Thompson, all at +2. High point man was Steve Lozzi with 16.

  The back nine birdie pool was a carryover from last week, so with $205 on the line, Bino again stepped up and drained one on 12, and Ed Finn sunk a beauty of a long downhiller on 13 to split the pot. 19th hole woulda, shoulda, coulda talk revealed that two other players each had 3-foot birdie putts on 13, but could not close the deal, so Big Ed says thanks, you losers! The only other birdies were had on 10 (Johns MacNeil and Hrenko).

  And finally, the year-end tournament will be held on Sunday, October 1st. Because of the excessive amounts of rain-outs (or should I say cart-not outs), we will have completed 18 weeks of the 20-week schedule by October 1st. Consideration was given to playing two official league nights after the tourney, but at that time of year, sunlight becomes an issue. On Tuesday, 10/10, sunset is at 6:10 PM, so many groups would not even get 9 holes in. Accordingly, we will forego the final two weeks, and the funds allocated for those weeks will be used instead to pay tourney greens fees and cart fees for all. And there will still be a very generous amount of cash remaining to again have a sizable cash prize pot. (This year, we will abandon the blind team format. The team that you play on will be your scoring team.)

   Well, it seems that both Easton and SIGL are at the top of their games, as the course is in superb shape, and SIGL golfers, though not in superb shape, are at least playing some very good golf.

     Last week we had a season high 19 points posted by Steve Lozzi, but that mark did not last long as Jim Lyons, fresh off a four day golf trip, returned to his home course to card a fantastic (career low?) 74, with 20 league quota points on the front. Jimmy, who was really hitting his drives, will easily take 1st Individual with a +9. Also posting a very fine round is Terry Moore at +5, and he will be rewarded with 2nd place.

     And for the first time all year, the outright 1st Individual happened to be partnered with the outright 2nd Ind., so, if you know your math, that means that Jim and Terry will also gladly take 1st Team honors.

     Johnny MacNeil continues to have a hot hand, and this week his +4 will go nicely with his partner, the resurgent Chris Sullivan, who chipped in with his own +4 to take 2nd Team accolades.

     Martin Enright just keeps marching along with good golf every week, and this time he stands out with his fine approach on 4 to 12'9" which stood up all day, and will earn Marty some CTP cash.

     We had a respectable 11 birdies for the league nine, and four were lucky enough to survive, and earn cash. Steve Peterson, who we know had at least a putt of 12'10" sunk a nice bird on 4, this humble hacker striped his best approach of the year on the 5th hole and converted the 8-footer. Star of the day Jim Lyons added to his stash with an impressive birdie on 7, and for the first time all year, the 8th hole was not totally subjugated by SIGL sharpshooters, so semi-star of the day, Johnny Mac will get paid for his sole birdie on the hole. As usual, 2 (McGarry, Lyons) and 9 (Moore, Aronson, Tracy) were easily covered, and the 6th hole also did not survive (Szczurko, Doonan).

    In addition to the money-winners above, the hard-luck Dan Szczurko continues to shine every week, as he posted another outstanding +4. And for the second week in a row, Dan's birdie on the tough 6th hole was smashed. Eddie MacNeil, trying to keep up with Brother John, posted his own fine +3, as did Rick Keating, Tom Nolan, Rich White, and Bob Eaton. As noted, J. Lyons was the easy highpointer at 20.

   The back nine birdie pool continues to grow in popularity, and this week there were no surviving birds among the seven sunk. Next week there will be $105 carried over for those who were in the pool this week.

     A couple of things that might need reminding: 1) Preferred lies in your own fairways only. That means, otherwise, do not touch or move the ball, unless allowed under the rules (relief, etc.) 2) All balls worth a point or better MUST be holed out. Any player who takes credit for a point when not holing out will be disqualified for that round. 3) We are again getting unintelligible cards, this week having one card submitted with no names, but only a single initial for each golfer as the only clue as who was on the card. You are playing in a competition each week with 60 plus golfers. If you can't submit a card with your name on it, then you will not be a part of that night's competition.

     Well, we started off the second half of the season with a bang and a stellar display of golfing skill, as only nine golfers out of the pack failed to  meet quota. And a very impressive 18 players were +3 or better.

     But the dynamic duo of playing partners Steve Lozzi and Bob Loring really shone brightest as Steve had a league season high 19 points, good for a super +8, and steady Bob filled in right behind with his own +6. They will be rewarded with Ist and 2nd Individual, respectively.

    Steve also had the benefit of a fine partner in the hot Dan Szczurko, who contributed a solid +4 to the effort, so Loz and Dan will proudly accept Team honors at +12.  John MacNeil had another outstanding night with a +5, and Steve Danieli added a nice +4 to the cause to take 2nd Team at +9.

    While he was at it, Johnny Mac decided to add to his winnings with a crisp approach on 2 to 6'9" to take Closest to Pin. Lately, 6'9" on a par 5 has not been good enough to take CTP, but J Mac set the pace early, and all comers fell short.

    Again, we had two surviving birds for $60 payoffs each. Rich White may not have been closest on 2 but he was the only one to sink a birdie attempt and will be rewarded accordingly. For the second week in a row, the 4th hole will pay a skin, and this week it was a fine birdie by Stretch Doonan. The tough 6th hole was cancelled out by Hrenko and Szczurko, and the usual suspects 8th ( Danieli, Lozzi, Begley) and 9th ( Lozzi, Loring, Thompson, J. MacNeil, Frasca) were covered.

    The back nine birdie pool rewarded, Rich White, Ed Finn, Rick Walsh, and Jim Lyons with $26 each.

     As noted, there was a ton of excellent scoring this week; almost too many to mention. Aside from those who won money, the best of the rest were: Bob Eaton at +5, and Mark Spears, Johnny Hrenko, and this humble hacker, all at +4. High point man this week was Steve Lozzi.

    SIGL continues to be well represented in Easton CC tournament play. The club championship was held last weekend, and we're proud to report that ex-SIGL great Rich McKenna took the B Flight crown, while TJ James and Bob Loring tied for 2nd place in the A Division. Well done, men.

    Paul Begley and Dr. Saul: don't forget to pick up your envelopes. And finally, not only did we score well this week, but we skated even better, as way too many players failed to pay second half dues as requested and required. Pay next week or your name will be removed from the sign-in sheet.

  Well, we are a little behind schedule, but we finally reached the half way point of the season.We're in mid-season form, with good turnout and again some solid scoring.

   This week, Ed Reagan, who keeps Indian Pond in the super shape that it's in, looked like the low single digit golfer that he was in his prime, with a great +7 to take 1st Individual. And the ageless Martin Enright continues to impress, this time with a  +6 for second.

   Proving once again that two Johns are better than one, Bino and Mr. Tracy teamed up with outstanding  +4s each to garner 1st Team honors at +8. Solid play by Saul Payne (+3) and Paul Begley (+2) will be rewarded with 2nd Team moola.

  Dan Szczurko's neat approach on the 9th hole to 6 feet looked good for a long time until Greg Willard came along at the end and cozied one to 1'11" inches to well earn the Closest to Pin prize.

  There were 11 frontside birdies, and two will be rewarded with cash money. Rick Keating got on the money board with a fine 2 on 4, and the steady Mike McNeice birdied the difficult 5th hole to split the pot with Rick. Birdies on 3 (James, Loring, Barry), 8 (Reagan, Doonan, Tracy, Barry), and 9 (Enright, G. Willard) were smashed.

   Notable performances that were not money winners were Barry (+5), Finn and E. MacNeil at +3, and James, Musgrove, and Loring at +2. Highpointers were this humble hacker and TJ at 15. (Last week's highpoint earner was Rich White at 15.)

   The back nine birdie pool is becoming more popular each week, and this time, John Hrenko, Ed MacNeil, Paul McDermott, and TJ James will split the pot ($27 each).

  At the half, we are happy to report that 52 golfers have won something this year, and a total of $2,655 has been distributed, not including $395 in the new back nine pool. Top earners are: Harding- $235, McNeice-$155, Shannon-138, James-$129, and Lozzi-$120.

    Rules clarification: The driving range and fence are treated as immovable obstructions. You get free relief from both. However, if your ball enters the fence or range from behind, you get relief from the fence at point of entry but you do not get "line of sight" relief from the fence or range. You would still have to punch out sideways to get back in better play.

  And finally, 2nd half dues payments are due next week. Please make sure you bring payment. Week 7 on July 11th was kind of a half-assed league night because of the (ridiculous) decision to prohibit golf carts that day. Anyone who was planning to play that night, but could not or did not because of the cart policy may deduct $30 from the dues of $315 ($285 net).

  Well, it rained Monday night, so you never know, but carts were given the go, and the course was again in superb shape. A dreary start to the day turned into a beautiful afternoon for golf. Apparently because of vacations and such, turnout was light, and for some reason it was a very substandard collective performance.  There were only four players who exceeded +2 against quota and a very paltry five birdies for the night. Challenging pins accounted for some of the poor scoring, and especially the dastardly placement on the first hole. Based on 19th hole feedback about Hole 1, it appears there were more three putts than two, a few four putts, and more than a few first putts that ended up off the green.

  Aside from anyone named Dan, there were few outstanding rounds this night. Dan McGarry had the primo round of the night at +4 and will be rewarded with 1st Individual honors and cash. Dan Svirsky's bogey on 1 gave him the card-off win over Dan Szczurko and Rich White at +3 to take 2nd Ind.

  It only took a season-low +5 to claim the 1st Team prize: Steady Dan Svirsky paired his +3 with Steady Eddie Finn's +2 to earn envelopes. Dan Szczurko will be rewarded for his fine +3 by taking 2nd Team with partner Alex Turchette, who contributed a solid +1. for a +4 total.

  In keeping with the Dan theme for the night, early in the day, Mr. McGarry put his approach on 8 to 12'7" and surprisingly that number bested all subsequent comers, so he will gladly add to his winnings with Closest to Pin money.

  As noted, there were a disappointing five birdies for the night, and three will be rewarded. Alex Turchette will add to his 2nd Team win with a $40 birdie on 3.  This humble hacker curled a downhill sidewinder into the hole on the 6th, and TJ James followed up his eagle last week with a birdie on 9, that amazingly went uncontested. Joe Curtis and Rich White cancelled each other out on 2.

  The back nine supplemental pool rewarded three entrants with $33 each: Rick Keating on the 10th, Jim Lyons on 12, and beauty of a bird by Bob Loring on 15.

   Aside from those mentioned above, the only other notables were rookie Sean Knowles, John Fay, and Paul Begley at +2. And speaking of notables, hats off to Easy Ed Finn (same guy as Steady Eddie Finn) who turned in the best round of his career Friday with an even par 71 at Easton CC. Way to go, Ed.

   And finally, SIGL is again well represented in Easton CC tourney play. In a hard fought battle all the way, this dedicated duffer bested the scrappy Dr. Saul Payne in extra innings to claim the A Division (one below the Championship flight)  Match Play title. Well played, doc.

   Well, we seem to be back on track and hopefully it will be full steam ahead for the rest of the year. Conditions on the course have been superb, and hats off to the Easton grounds crew. It looks as though SIGLers are really hitting their midseason stride as there were many outstanding returns and a lot of big numbers, with only 15 golfers not reaching quota. And an impressive nine players at +4 or better.

   For a man with his natural ability, Ed MacNeil had been mired in mediocrity this season, but he broke out boldly this week with a very impressive +9 on the back of two birds. After starting 3 over par after two, he was even par the rest of the way to easily secure 1st Individual prize money at +9. Rich White exploded out of the box with a classic birdie on 1 (outstanding drive, approach, and putt) and threw in an unconventional bird on 3 by pitching in from down front on the 3rd. (Moments after complaining that he had lost his pitching wedge and didn't have the right club for the shot.) Rich will take 2nd Individual with a hardy +6.

  North Attleboro's own Chris Sullivan chose his partner wisely (E. MacNeil) and contributed to the team effort by meeting quota, so MacNeil/Sullivan will take 1st Team honors with +9. Tommy LeRoy James was plodding along indifferently until one special shot made his day on 9, which gave him a +4 finish. Teaming up with a solid +2 from rookie Pat Heffernan, they will take 2nd Team at +6.

  A fine shot by Joe Curtis to 14'5" on 6 looked like it would hold up for Closest to Pin, but in the late innings Jim Shannon stepped up to the plate and striped one in to 2'5" to earn the $25 envelope.

  There were an impressive 15 birdies and an eagle on the night, and five will earn cash. Rich White's bird on 1 prevailed, as did Bob Loring's on 2. Jim Shannon added to his productive night with winning birdies on 4 and 6. As noted, TJ was playing an unremarkable round until he stared down the pin on the 9th hole from 116 yards out and cooly popped it into the hole for the eagle three. T will be the first to admit that he has been suffering some putting woes, so being the smart fella that he is, decided that the best way to avoid three-putting is to put the ball in the hole from the fairway. Nice job TJ. Birdies on 3 and 8 were covered and birds on 9 were bested by the eagle.

  In the new back nine birdie pool, a silky swing and a peach of a putt produced a beauty of a bird on 13 by Mike McNeice to take the entire $90 pot. It was the only birdie on the back by anyone in the pool.

  As noted, collectively it was a very good night. Notable performers not mentioned above were hard luck Mike Bradley at +5, Ed Reagan, Rick Keating, and Dan McGarry at +4, and J. Greg Paone and John Tracy, both at +3. Highpoint honors will be shared this week by Ed MacNeil and Rich White with 17 points each.

  After eight weeks, it is nice to see that 40 golfers out of a roster of 63 have won some money. The biggest earners to date are Shannon ($138), Lozzi ($120), McNeice ($95), Hrenko ($90), and James ($89).

  And speaking of notables, this humble hacker is proud to report a fifth career hole in one, this one on the 5th hole at the superb Indian Pond Country Club in Kingston on Wednesday, the sole highlight of a painfully bad round.

  And finally, it looks like we may be missing the company of friend Lenny Lima for a while  after an unfortunate mishap resulted in a hand injury. Get well soon, Len. (If you're able to smoke a cigar and drink a beer with your left hand, join us at the 19th hole.)
