AND IN OTHER NEWS....

After 31 years at the helm, (with one year off, 2014, for good behavior) I have decided to accept the SIGL Executive Committee's generous golden parachute offer, and will be retiring from administering the league.

We were prepared to begin a nation-wide search for  a suitable replacement complete with a grueling interview process......

SIGL INTERVIEWER:    So, I can tell by looking at

                                      you that you are breathing.

APPLICANT:                   Yes, I am.

SIGL INTERVIEWER:    Great! When can you start?

But, there will be no need for that since Mr. J. Gregory Paone has generously agreed to step up again and take the reins. And TJ has agreed to stay on as an able-bodied assistant. They can be reached at paonejg@yahoo.com and tjgolfer@aol.com.

It all began in the late 1970's or early '80's when Sam Solari, Earl Cain, and Bob Thompson, owners of small Stoughton industrial companies (sheet metal, machine shops, etc.) decided that for their benefit and that of their employees, they would start a small golf league at Cedar Hill Golf Course in Stoughton, and thus was born the Stoughton Industrial Golf League. After a couple of years at Cedar Hill, they moved the league to Easton Country Club, where it has been ever since. So for almost 40 straight years, SIGL golfers have been teeing it up every Tuesday during the season at Easton. No doubt the league began with a dozen or so participants and by 2021 we had an all-time high of 68 players on the roster.

Throughout the years, there have been hundreds of golfers who have been on the SIGL roster at one time or another. But only a select few can say they have been around since almost the beginning. A tip of the cap to my esteemed playing partners Brian Murphy and Ed Finn, who are the longest tenured SIGLers, having joined the league in the mid-eighties (35+ years). And an honorable mention to our other partner Rick Walsh, and the team of Alex Turchette, Joe Curtis, John MacNeil, and Ed MacNeil who all can claim almost three decades of continuous SIGL play.

From the beginning, I have always had valuable assistance, and would like to acknowledge and thank friends Ed Solari, John Carrabino, Greg Paone, and TJ for their support through the years. And a special thanks to Bino for starting the website way back when.

The founding principles of the league were to have a weekday activity where the guys could look forward to getting together, play some golf, have some fun, yet in a stimulating competitive format. Through the years, we have striven to keep those principles in mind.

So, a new chapter begins and let's hope everyone is back for a great 2022 season. See ya then.

                       THANKS FOR THE MAMMARIES

                 SORRY, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES

Week 17 was pretty much straight down the middle with 22 plus scores, 24 minus, and 4 even.

Congrats to rookie Tim Greene, who broke 80 for the first time in his golf career and who topped it off with a 1st Individual at +6. Bill Simmons had his best day of the year, also posting a strong +6, and will take 2nd Individual after a card-off with Tim. Ted Meyer gets on the board for the second week in a row with a sterling +4, edging out Nick Dejesus and John Hrenko in a card-off.

Ed MacNeil had a fine +3 and couldn't have asked for a better partner when he drew Bill Simmons (+6) as an alternate and they will be awarded 1st Team with their +9 total.

Bill was back in the act again when his +6 was complemented by a steady +1 from alternate Terry Moore. And the scorecards say that their +7 was better than the +7 of John Hrenko (+4) and the red-hot Mike Leonard (+3) for 2nd Team. John and Mike will have 3rd Team envelopes coming.

It wasn't quite like the one inch CTP recorded by Greg Paone last week, but a fine shot on the 4th got Big Bill Doonan to within 7'11" of the hole, only inches more than his height, for a CTP win this week.

The 1st was the only hole not birdied Tuesday, as we had six skins live: Co-star of the day Bill Simmons on 2, the always steady Bob Bourne on 3, sweet-swinging Mike McNeice on 4, the violent swinging Mike Bradley on 5, the resurgent Greg Paone (7), and fellow co-star of the day Tim Greene on 8. The 6th hole (Meyer, Hrenko) and the 9th (Leonard, Babyak, Simmons) were smashed.

We had 29 players sign up for the Backnine skins pool, but only seven birds were sunk, with three surviving. Chris Haslam will be rewarded for his 3 on the 12th, Tim Greene on 14, and the still steady Bob Bourne on 15. As required, the 13th was easily smashed (Curtis, Doonan, Murphy, Dugan).

Of the 22 plus scores this week, nine were "exceptional" (+3 or better). Seven of the nine won money, and the two hard-luck standouts who didn't cash were Nick Dejesus at +4 and Andrew Dugan at +3. Highpointers were Bill Simmons, Greg Paone, and Mike McNeice with 17 points each.

And finally, only one week left to the regular season. Sorry for the truncated season, but factors beyond our control (rain outs, wash outs, aeration course closure) made it difficult to get out on the course this year. However, we will have an increased amount of cash left over to be applied to tournament prize money, etc.

Today is the last day to let us know if you are out for the tourney. Thanks.

   See you next Tuesday.

With a rain out and a scheduled course closure for aeration, we missed a couple of weeks, but we're now back on track. (And for those of you who e-mailed saying you had no prior notice of the course closure on August 31st, read your e-mails or the blog once in a while.)

Results this week were pretty much down the middle, with 18 players exceeding quota, 15 evens, and 21 falling short.

Mike Silva continues his red-hot play and this week posted a crisp 18 points, good for  +6 and 1st Individual.

Dana Willard had one of his better nights by recording a robust +5 and 2nd Individual.

And Peter Frasca had a superb +4 and that is good enough for 3rd.

Of the winning Individuals, none had enough help from partners to secure 1st Team, so that honor will go to this humble hacker at +3 and alternate partner Mike Leonard at +3 for a 1st Team +6.

Chris Sullivan held steady at Even, and that will be enough for Chris and Dana Willard (+5) to take 2nd Team at +5.

And the same goes for 3rd Team, as Peter Frasca's +4 paired with alternate partner John Hrenko's Even will get them in the money, after a card-off win over E. MacNeil/Meyer, M. Silva/Tracy, and Danieli/Pryles.

Mr. Hrenko may have had a little luck being drawn as an alternate, but there was no luck, only skill, when he striped his third shot on the 9th hole to 1'10" for CTP honors and a kick-in bird.

With the greens still recuperating, there were a very modest ten birdies on the frontside. And when the dust settled, Mike Leonard's 3 on the 5th hole will result in Mike taking the whole pot. Birds on 3 (Danieli, Barry), 4 (Regan, Dugan), 8 (M. Silva, McDermott), and 9 (E. MacNeil, DeJesus, Hrenko) were smashed.

There were even fewer birdies on the back, with only six bids finding the hole, but four of those will get paid: Dan Svirsky on the 10th, Mike Silva on 11, pride of Southie Joe Curtis on 12, and Bill Doonan on 18. (And Billy says thank you Bob Bourne for not getting in the pool.) As usual, the 13th hole was covered, but this time with only two birdies (Svirsky, Dugan).

Almost everyone who had an outstanding day (+3 or better) cashed in. But the two hard-luckers who didn't were Tim Greene and Jay Chapman, both at +3.

The SIGL year-end tournament will be held on Sunday, October 3rd. (For those of you who will be e-mailing in the next couple of weeks asking when the year-end tournament is, here's your response: the year-end tournament will be Sunday, October 3rd.) It will either be an 8:30 shotgun start or tee times, going off the front and back. There will be other golfers on the course, and Easton has asked us to be aware of pace-of-play requirements. Anyone who will not be playing in the year-end tourney must let us know as soon as possible. Thanks.

And finally, we haven't had a blog in a couple of weeks, so this is a little late, but hats off to SIGLers Len Lima, Peter Frasca, and Steve Danieli for being on 1st place teams in the Red, White, and Blue tourney, and congrats also to Chris Haslam, Andrew Dugan, and their guests in winning the recent Easton CC Member-Guest event. Well done boys.

   See you next Tuesday.

Overall, we had a mediocre night, with 20 players exceeding quota, 9 right on their number, but 25 making a negative impression.

However, the always productive Mike McNeice put it into overdrive this week when he posted his career low frontside with a 35, good for 22 points and 1st Individual.

Also with a career day, Rick Walsh posted his highest point total ever with 17, also good for a super +8 (losing to Mike in a card-off.)

And Dylan Amaral, who was mired in mediocrity for most of the year, has really turned it on recently and this week carded his best SIGL nine with a sterling +7 and 3rd Individual.

Dylan also had the best partner, when alternate Nick Dejesus was slotted in with him, contributing his own +4 for an unbeatable +11 for 1st Team honors.

Mr. McNeice's partner, Chris Regan did not hurt him with an even quota round, so their combined +8 will take 2nd Team.

Ed Finn has been playing great golf of late, but this week was not one of his best at -2. But with scoring partner Rick Walsh's career +8, the duo still managed to nab 3rd Team.

Peter Frasca went out early and posted a super 5'8" on the Closest to Pin 8th hole. Later, we had someone record a nifty 4'6" but neglected to identify himself, so Mr. Frasca will take the prize. We have 64 active players and there are many with the same first name. You cannot write down just your first name when we have multiple players by that first name, and expect us to identify you. We are not going to start privately e-mailing everyone with that name to see if it was them that got Closest. Nice shot though.

We had a very healthy 20 birdies on the front, but when the dust cleared, there was but one standing. When he sunk his putt for a 3 on the 5th, Steve Dasaro took the whole pot, while getting on the money board for the first time this year. Holes 2, 3, 4, 8, and 9 were all smashed, with 9 being birdied eight times.

In the Backnine skins pool, we had a more modest 10 birds and an eagle, with three surviving. After having his three birdies on the front smashed, Mike McNeice finally received a reward for his bird on 12, Chuck Mathieson bested all birdies on 13 with his eagle, and this humble hacker salvaged an otherwise disappointing round with a 3 on the 15th.

Outstanding scorers who did not cash are Chris Haslam at +5,  Dan Raymo at +4, and Tim Greene, Mike Silva, and Wayne Musgrove at +3. Mike McNeice was highpointer with 22 points.

And finally, Easton CC has informed us that the course will be closed for aeration on Tuesday, August 31st. With the two prior weather postponements that we have had, this will allow 19 weeks instead of 20 weeks for the season, since the year-end tourney is October 3rd. All funds not used to pay for Week 20 will be added to the year-end cash prizes.

  See you next Tuesday.

Well, we came back down to Earth this week after last week's stratospheric (good) scores, with results split pretty evenly between plus players, evens, and minuses. Of course, there is always a handful of real standouts, and this week's turn in the spotlight is headlined by Andrew Dugan who had his best day of the season with 17 points and a league-leading +6 for 1st Individual.

Trying to keep up with his friend and playing partner Andrew, Chris Haslam posted his best numbers to date, too with a +5 good for 2nd Individual.

We had a traffic jam for 3rd with Alex Turchette, Scott Silvia, Paul Raynard, and John Tracy all at +4. And a deep card-off reveals Mr. Silvia will get an envelope.

Chris Haslam had a good partner with Mark Spear's +2 and they will take 1st Team at +7.  Alex Turchette had one of his better nights at +4 and teamed with a nice +3 from Dylan Amaral to take 2nd Team at +7, after losing the card-off to Chris and Mark.

Andrew Dugan (+6) and Ned Babyak (E) will take a card-off win for 3rd Team over a valiant effort by Paul Raynard (+4) and Mark Nolan (+2).

Len Lima continues his good run, and this week will proudly accept payment for his fine shot into the CTP 6th hole to 8'2".  Playing partner Saul Payne, already in with his own birdie, was rooting for Len's bid to drop (no really) but it just missed.

After last week's amazing 24 birdies and an eagle, we toned it down a few notches with a very modest eight birdies on the front, with two paying off. Alex Turchette's envelope will be a little fatter with his excellent birdie on the 4th, and Saul Payne's deuce on 6 will take the other half of the pot. The 5th hole (Dejesus, Mark Nolan), the 7th (Dugan, Mathieson), and the 9th (Dugan, Sczcurko) were all smashed.

The only standouts who did not win money this week were John Tracy and Paul Raynard each at +4 and Ed Finn at +3. Highpointer was Andrew Dugan at 17 points.

We had only 27 entrants in the B9 skins pool, and only seven birdie bids found the hole, with two paying off.  Brian Murphy drilled an aggressive putt into the flagstick for a 3 on 11, and Chris Haslam topped off his day with a fine bird on 15. Smashed were 13 (M. Silva, Haslam, Dugan) and the 14th (Finn, Musgrove).

  See you next Tuesday.

Well, last week we played great, but apparently that was just a warm-up for what might be  the best scoring day in SIGL history. Congrats to Chris Regan (+11) who established what is thought to be a new all-time SIGL record by earning 25 points with an eagle, birdie, six pars, and a bogey, good for a 2 under par 34. (Career low, Chris?)

Jay Chapman had his best nine holes of golf in his career, SIGL or otherwise, when he sank three birdies on his way to a super 18 points, +11. Chris prevailed in a card-off for 1st Ind. and Jay will take 2nd.

Another having his best round in years, or maybe ever, was Mark Nolan coming in with 17 points and a +8, good for 3rd Ind.

Mr. Chapman had plenty of help for the Team competition from the red-hot Ed Finn, who threw a +5 Jay's way and they will take 1st Team at +16.

Mark Nolan was also ably assisted by partner Andrew Dugan's +4 and they will claim 2nd Team at +12.

And for 3rd Team, we have two fine +5 performances each from John Tracy and Rick Walsh. Their +10 is a card-off win over Regan +11/Svirsky -1.

There was plenty of space available all day with 23' the best CTP late into the day, but along came Scott Silvia who tightened that up significantly by dropping one to 3'11" to take the prize, and by sinking a skins putt to boot.

We had a fantastic 24 birdies and an eagle on the front, but only two will pay off. Scott's 2 on 4 will take half the pot, and Mr. Regan's eagle on the 9th trumped the four birds on that hole. Holes 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 were heavily smashed.

The Back Nine skins pool had a more modest 11 birds, and again, two will survive. Eric Aronson will be picking up an $83 envelope for his birdie on the 14th, and Chuck Mathieson finally had a bird that lived, this one on 16.

In addition to the aforementioned stars of the day, there many other notables, too many to mention. Including the winners, there were ten players at +4 or better. But we will note that Chuck Mathieson posted 20 points for a +5, and for his 18 holes had six birdies and a 74.

And again, SIGLers did themselves proud in another Easton CC tournament, this time the annual club championship. Congrats are in order to the SIGLers that excelled: Greg Paone took 1st place in the A flight, with Rich White 3rd. Dan Svirsky was 2nd in the B, while Mike Leonard placed 1st in C flight and TJ 3rd, and Steve Danieli was T2 in D. Nice work men.

And finally, we are now entering Week 13, and there is still a large handful of players who have not paid. We have sent out two notifications regarding payments due. If you have not yet paid, and you do not contact us between now and next Monday to make firm arrangements for payment, then don't bother showing up Tuesday. Your name will be removed from the roster and team sheet. This league is too big as it is, and we don't need to carry freeloaders to boot.

  See you next Tuesday.

Well we couldn't have started off the second half of the 2021 season in better fashion. The course has dried out, is in great shape, and some SIGL troopers were really piling up the points, with 18 golfers at +3 or better.

Having his best SIGL day ever, the red-hot Mark Spears, chalked up 15 points, good for a First Place +8.

And Dan Szczurko could not have started off his round any better, After a good drive, he had 160 in from the right rough. Lofting his 7-iron approach to the green, for some reason, no one in his group saw the result, and after looking short and long, the ball was found sitting quietly at the bottom of the cup. That 8 point start carried Dan to Second Individual at +6.

The resurgent Len Lima also had a super +6 himself, but was not able to match Dan's eagle in the card-off, and will take 3rd Ind.

Mr. Szczurko had himself a fine partner in the always steady Chris Regan, who contributed a +4 to Dan's +6, good for First Team at +10.

A couple of other standouts were also paired together as Paul Raynard kicked in a +5 to go along with TJ's +4 to secure 2nd Team at +9.

And Individual leader Mark Spears at +8 had a disappointing partner in this humble hacker who brought him down a notch with his -1, but that was still good enough for Third Team honors.

Well, it might not be as good as two inches after two shots, but 6'3" after three is still impressive, and good enough for Johnny MacNeil to take CTP on the 2nd hole.

The ball was finding the hole early and often this week, as we had 15 birds and the eagle. on the frontside, but only three will cash: Dan's eagle on 1 held up, Len Lima will collect skins money for the second week in a row for his birdie on the 4th, and course resident Bob Bourne was amazed that his was the only bird on 8.

Holes 2, 3, 6, and 9 were birdied by too many players too mention.

Highpointer for the day was the always solid Mike McNeice with 19 points, and who posted a stellar 73 for his round.

We had a healthy 30 entrants in the Backnine Skins pool, and like the front, there were 15 birdies and an eagle. Chris Regan's birdie on 11 will take a third of the pot. There were eight birdies on the 13th but the hole is not a smash because rookie Tim Greene did everyone one better with his great eagle on 13, and Mike Silva continues his good play with a fine 3 on 15. Holes 10 and 12 were covered. So, for  18 holes, we had two eagles and 30 birdies; by far the best ever.

Haven't had a chance to review the payments but if you did not pay this week, pay next Tuesday or you will excommunicated.

  See you next Tuesday.

I guess you could say it was a rough night. Some kept it in the fairway, though, as 18 players surpassed their quota, 8 were even, and 27 fell short.

Hitting it straight and long, Mike Silva had his best night of the year with 18 points, good for a winning +6 and a crisp 74. Likewise, Brian Murphy had a season high 12 points, a +5 and 2nd Individual. Greg Willard and Mark Spears shined with +4s, with Greg prevailing in the card-off.

Mr. Silva's partner had a tough time of it, so that opened the door for Team prizes. And in stepped Dr. Saul Payne who nicely complemented B. Murphy's +5 with his own +3 to take 1st Team at +8. Although missing out for Individual honors, Mark Spears +4 added to alternate Andy Pryles +1 was good enough for 2nd Team at +5. Rounding out the Team honors, Paul Raynard's +3 and Peter Frasca (+1), who is on a plane to Iceland as we speak, will take 3rd Team over Greg Willard and Len Lima.

Closest to Pin on 9 got progressively better as the day went on, and the matter was settled at 8'10" by Greg Willard.

For the skins pool, we had a carryover pot of $240, and if your name is Mike, you have a good chance of cashing as Mr. Silva, Wall, and McNeice will split the pot with birds on 5, 8, and 9. The 4th was covered by Bourne, Aronson, Murphy, and Moore.

Highpointer for the day was Mike Silva at 18, and the only non-winning notable were Nick Dejesus and Rich White, both at +3.

There were 30 entrants in the Back Nine skins pool but only four birdie bids found the hole, with two surviving. Len Lima will have a fat envelope coming with his crisp 3 on 10, and Ed Finn will gladly take the other half of the pot with his birdie on 15. The 14th was smashed by M. Silva and M. McNeice.

And finally, next week is the beginning of the second half, and that means payment of $345 is due. PUT YOUR CHECK IN THE BOX. We are no longer accepting the lame excuse that "I would have paid but I didn't see you around."

   See you next Tuesday.
