As has been the case in recent weeks, we had decidedly more minus scores than pluses, and yet there was a solid handful of really good scores.
Leading the pack this week is the Mayor of Southie, Joe Curtis who will no doubt be buying the next round at the L Street Tavern with his cash winnings (maybe there's some doubt). Joe put together what is most likely his career SIGL performance at 19 points and a +9, finishing his round with birds on 8 and 9.
We had three strong +6s from TJ James, Pat Heffernan, and Jim Shannon which required a look at the card. A par by Shannon on the 5th hole will make the difference.
Mr. Curtis still needed a solid partner to ensure 1st Team honors and Paul McDermott provided that with his his +2 for a +11 Team win.
Pat Heffernan may also have had his career round in SIGL with a 10pts/+6 showing. Although losing 2nd Individual to a card-off, Pat was paired with a steady +2 from Wayne Musgrove to take 2nd Team at +8.
There were 13 birdies for the day, and two will split the pot. Mike Wall had a quiet round but his birdie on 4 was heard loud and clear and is good for $60. Scott Sylvia has been playing some good golf lately and will finally get rewarded for his fine bird on 7.
Holes that were smashed were 3rd (Bourne, Tracy, Walsh), 6th (Leonard, Paone, Thompson), 8th (Curtis, Shannon) and the 9th (Curtis, Musgrove, G. Willard).
Hard luck players with excellent rounds but no cash were:
TJ James +6
Terry Thompson +5
Bob Bourne +5
Mark Nolan +4
Chris Sullivan +4
Dan Svirsky +4
Highpointer for the day is Joe Curtis with 19.
Beginning next week, we will resume a Closest to Pin competition. We will not be using the Easton marker and tape measure, so we will provide something for the first group. We will start with Hole 2 for CTP and with $25 being paid for CTP, we will resume the old payout for Team and Individual winners ($25 for 1st, $15 for 2nd). We are also resuming the $5 Back Nine optional skins pool. The B9 slot box and payment envelopes will be in their usual spot at the right side of the bar. Your envelope must be in the box BEFORE you tee off on 10.
And finally, we are happy to report that 2 Jerks BBQ will be expanding their operation to include Tuesdays. (Mike McNeice says they must have hired a third jerk.) And their featured Tuesday item will be the fan favorite $5 smashburger. You can have one waiting for you at the turn by calling ahead from the 8th tee at 508-238-2500, x2. As a very stable orange genius might say, "Try one; what do ya got to lose?"
See you next Tuesday.
HEY, I KNOW MORE ABOUT SMASHBURGERS
THAN ALL THREE JERKS COMBINED.

After a breakout night last week, we returned to the norm this Tuesday with just 12 teams out of 30 exceeding quota. But as usual, there were some hot hands, and this week top honors go to Paul Raynard whose 14 points mark his SIGL career high. That is good for a sterling +8 and 1st Individual. Also probably recording his best-ever point total is Eric Aronson who came home with 17 points and a +7, taking the 2nd Individual prize.
For Team, Paul had no help but Eric had just enough from Alex Turchette to finish at +8. But hold on, sweet-swinging Lou Silva continued his stellar play, and this week totaled 19/+6. With a solid contribution of +2 from partner Bob Loring, Silva/Loring matched Aronson/Turchette at +8. And the scorecard will declare Lou and Bob 1st Team winners with a card-off win on the 5th.
After 19 birdies the week before, this Tuesday there were only eight. But wait, do I see a double circle on the card? Yes sir, as Terry Thompson took just two shots to complete the 8th hole. Nice job T. Lou Silva continues to cash in the skins pool, this time with a fine birdie on 5, and co-star of the day (Thompson shares top billing) Paul Raynard will be rewarded for his deuce on the 6th. Birdies that did not survive were Aronson, White, Sweet on 2, and Regan, Frasca, and Mark Nolan on the 8th hole.
Notable scores that will go unrewarded are:
McGarry +6, Meyer +5, Payne +5, Spears +5,
Regan +4, Barry +4, Bradley +3, and Curtis +3.
Beginning next week, the drop off box for completed scorecards will be IN THE CLUBHOUSE and NOT IN THE PRO SHOP. Easton wants us to continue using their "slot" box, so the Mrs. Meyer cigar box will remain on the bench until further notice.
And finally, as usual, SIGL was well represented in the most recent Easton CC tournament. Bob Bourne and Steve Danieli were on the 2nd Place four-man team, Mike McNeice, Steve Lozzi, and this humble hacker placed 3rd, and Mike Leonard and Mike Sweet took 5th. And Bill Doonan and Mike Wall won some nice skins cash. Good job men.
See you next Tuesday.

HIGHPOINTER: STEVE LOZZI 25
After starting off the season with the worst three-week stretch ever, and depressing quotas, we turned it around last week, and then really turned it on this week, with some really big scores.
To give you an idea of the monster day that Steve Lozzi had, Mike Wall had one of the best days ever in SIGL with 3 birdies and 21 points, and that only gets second billing this week.
The pride of Pope John XXIII High, Mr. Lozzi on Tuesday fashioned his best nine-hole score of his golf career, shooting 33 by virtue of four birds, four pars, and a bogey, good for an amazing 25 points and a +13. The SIGL archivist has just returned from our hall of records, and it appears that that number will break the previous record of 23 points held by retired legend Rich McKenna and active legend Bobby Bourne. Way to go Steve.
Mike Wall, gunning for Rookie of the Year honors, turned it up a few notches from his always solid play with 21 points and three birds to take 2nd Individual.
Dylan Amaral had the good fortune to be paired with Lozz this week, but he had a fine night in his own right, chipping in with a +3 putting the duo at +16, good for 1st Team.
Normally +11 would be an easy 1st Team winner but this week it was only good enough for a 2nd Team tie. Bob Loring contributed a fine +3 to Mr. Wall's +8, while Bill Doonan (+6) and Lou Silva at +5 equaled that mark. Two pars on the 5th hole will give the card-off honors to Doonan/Silva.
The flatsticks were really working this week as 19 birdie attempts found the hole, but only two will get paid. Steve Lozzi will get rewarded for one of his four birds (4th) and Lou Silva's fine birdie on 7 will pay off.
Birds that did not survive were: 2 (Lozzi, Bourne), 3 (Silvia, Doonan, Sweet), 5 (Lozzi, Shannon), 6 (Wall, Regan, Bourne), 8 (Lozzi, Wall, Leonard), 9 (Wall, Shannon, Doonan, Paul Murphy).
Notables who did not cash:
Mike Leonard +6
Paul McDermott +6
Mike Sweet +5
Bob Bourne +5
Jim Shannon +5
Scott Silvia +5
Mark Nolan +5
And finally, as noted previously, 2 Jerks BBQ began patio food service at Easton this week, However, we have just learned that it will run Wednesday through Sunday, so unfortunately will not be available on our league night.
See you next Tuesday.

It appears that beginning Monday June 8th, there will be food and drink on the patio at Easton CC. So we can finally engage in some social drinking with friends instead of sitting on your couch hanging out with Johnny Walker.
However, for the time being, Easton will keep in place restrictions related to the sign-in process, Closest to Pin, and back -nine birdie pool, among other things.
See you next Tuesday.
