WEEK 17 CTP:        2ND HOLE

Well this week, we either didn't show up or, if we did, shouldn't have bothered. For some reason there were only 41 SIGLers who teed it up, and collectively we had our worst performance since our early-season rounds. There were only eight entrants who managed to exceed +1, and amazingly, there were only four teams that finished on the positive side of the ledger, and only three birdies were sunk on the frontside.

Leading the way of the few standouts were Mike Leonard and Bill Simmons at an impressive +5 each. The tie-breaker went to Hole 7 and all it took was a bogey for Mr. Leonard to claim 1st Individual honors.

Mike was in good position for a Team win and partner Brian Murphy did not disappoint as his +2 contribution added to Leonard's +5 to take the 1st Team prize.

For the second week in a row Len Lima was in a tie for 2nd Team, and, like last week, his partnership prevailed in a card-off. The team of Lima (+4) and Ed Finn (+2) matched the +6 of Bill Simmons (+5) and Ted Meyer (alt) (+1), but all it took were two bogeys by Lima/Finn on 1 to break the tie.

Mr. Finn added to his Team win prize money with a fine approach to the 9th Hole pin to 14'7" that held up all day and will take Closest to Pin honors, Ed's third CTP prize this year.

With all the poor scoring this week, there was an anemic three birdies on the frontside, and all will live. Greg Willard continues his solid play and will take a third of the pot with his birdie on 5, Bill Simmons is rewarded for his exclusive bird on 8, and Mike Leonard will collect for his 4 on 9.

We were a little more productive on the back nine, and six birdie attempts found their mark. Ed Finn added even more to his account with a dandy pitch-in on 10, and Bob Loring made up for a disappointing frontside with a fine bird on 15 that will split the take with Big Ed. The 11th hole was smashed by Bob Loring and Jim Shannoon, and 13 did not survive with birds by Dan McGarry and Johnny MacNeil.

As noted, overall scores were, ah..... bad. Aside from those who collected cash, the only other notables were Mike Nolan at +3, and Mark Spears, Paul Raynard, and Dan Szczurko, each at +2. Highpointer honors are split between Ed Finn, Bob Bourne, Bill Simmons, and John MacNeil at 14 points.

And finally, we have only two weeks of league play left, and then the year-end tournament on Sunday, October 13th. There is a tourney sign-up sheet at the front desk. Please make sure to sign up if you are playing or to write "Not Playing" if you cannot make it. Thanks.

  See you next Tuesday.

WEEK 17 CTP:                     9TH HOLE

We're coming down the homestretch, and for the second week in a row, put up some pretty good numbers, with only 12 SIGLers failing to meet quota, and 16 posting 3+ or better.

Saul Payne is back in the golf routine after spending the last few weeks as a home healthcare aide, and made quite an impression with a sterling +7 over quota. Likewise, Paul McDermott is starting to play his best golf and matched Doc with his own +7. So we went to the card, which shows that Saul's par on the fifth will earn him 1st Individual.

Saul's partner, who was Superman last week, went back to being Clark Kent this week, so that opened up the Team competition. That void was more than ably filled by the red hot Jim Shannon who returned an outstanding +6 and was partnered with veteran Rick Keating who had one of his better nights and chipped in with a fine +5 to take 1st Team at +11.

There was a traffic jam for 2nd Team at +7 involving Len Lima (+3)/Dana Willard (+4), Paul McDermott (+7)/Brian Murphy (E) and Dan Svirsky (+6)/Chris Sullivan (+1).

Len's original partner Mark Nolan, who is currently on a golf tour of the Emerald Isle, tried to phone his score in from Ballybunion, but Section 42; Paragraph 9 (a) of the SIGL by-laws prohibited  that, so Len was timely paired with alternate Dana Willard who produced a clutch +4 and who won the tie-breaker with his par on 5.

The 8th Hole usually produces a tight CTP result, but this week Dan Svirsky just missed an eagle two, and easily takes the prize with his ball at rest 1' 2" from the hole.

The greens are coming around and we had a respectable 11 birdies on the front, with eight of those cancelling each other out. When the dust cleared, that leaves Rick Walsh's long-range birdie bomb on 3, along with a nice 3 on the 7th by Paul McDermott, and surprisingly only one bird on 9, and that by Bulldog Jim Shannon. Birdies on 4 (Lozzi, Keating), 6 (J. MacNeil. McNeice, Payne), and 8 (Svirsky, Keating, G. Willard) did not survive.

We had a healthy 28 bettors in the Back Nine skins pool, with nine birdie attempts finding the mark. The productive Terry Thompson recorded a deuce on 14 and the almost unplayable pin placement on the top left of 16 did not stop Ed Finn from securing his own 2 so those fine gentlemen will split the $140 pot. Birdies on 11 (Doonan, Silvia), 12 (Svirsky, Finn), and, surprise, 13 (Lozzi, James, White) were smashed.

With so many good scores this week, many notable will not be getting envelopes. Posting +3s were Simmons, Meyer, Lozzi, Begley, Mattes, and Turchette. Ed MacNeil had a fine +4, and the real hard-luck golfer of the night was Jay Chapman who posted an impressive +6 but was unfortunately shut out. Highpointers this week were Dan Svirsky and Steve Lozzi at 17.

And finally, Easton has changed Sunday, October 13th from a shotgun start to tee times. Therefore, our year-end tourney will be tee times starting around 8:30, and we will simultaneously go off the front and the back. Either this week or next a tourney sign-up sheet will be at the front desk. To play, you MUST sign up. Thanks.

 See you next Tuesday.

HIGHPOINTER:       BOB LORING                         19 pts.

Well another week of poor attendance, but at least we played better, with only 11 out of 40 players not reaching quota, and 14 carding +2 or better. As a group, we play like a school of fish; we all turn in the same direction at the same time.

But the big fish this week was one Robert Loring, who had his best round in many years, returning a super 73, capped off with a super duper eagle on 18. We're not sure, but we think Bob joined Bob Bourne this year by shooting his age. (If not, it's close enough for government work.) The pride of Forest Hills started two over after two holes, and then played even par the rest of the way in. He gets highpointer honors with 19, and his +7 will earn him 1st Individual.

A stellar night was also had by rookie Bill Simmons, finishing strong with birds on 8 and 9 to take 2nd Individual at +6.

For the Team competition,  Mr. Loring's original partner was AWOL (where've been, Richie White?) so he got the luck of the alternate draw and was paired with Steve Mattes who threw in a respectable +1 to finish at +8. Bill Simmons and his +6 was also in the mix with partner Paul McDermott contributing at healthy +2 to tie Loring/Mattes at +8. The card-off went to the 7th hole, where Bob's birdie made the difference for 1st Team.

Closest to Pin was a tough 6th hole and it looked like Loring would add to his winnings with a nice approach, but Big Bill Doonan said, "don't get greedy, buddy" and deposited one to 11' to take the honors and the cash.

Again, there was a scarcity of birds, and we can't blame aerated greens forever. Of the nine that were sunk, five were exclusives. Paul McDermott got on the money board for the first time with one on 2, Bob Bourne just keeps rolling along and rolling it in with a birdie on 3, and B. Loring's 3 on the 7th will earn him a third of the pie. Birdies on the 5th (Mark Nolan, Walsh), 8th (Tracy, Simmons), and the 9th (Loring, Simmons) were smashed.

There was good participation in the B9 skins pool, and as usual, the 13th hole was thoroughly abused with six birds. But if you had a birdie on any other hole, you're getting paid. Looking in the box for an envelope will be Titanic (Terry) Thompson (11th), Doc Payne on 15, Johnny Hrenko on 16, and then we have Mr. Loring who striped a big drive down the middle on 18, and then proceeded to drop it into the hole from 133 yards for an eagle, capping off in fine fashion his fantastic 73. Well done, Bubba.

As usual, there was a handful of really good scores that were not rewarded with prizes. John Tracy and Brian Murphy posted +3s, Paul Begley and Mark Nolan had stellar +4s, and hard-luck player of the night was Rick Walsh, playing the best golf of his career, who had an impressive +5.

And finally, we have reached the 3/4 pole of the 2019 season. To date, we have dispersed $5,279 in competition prizes and skins pools with 51 out of 54 SIGLers cashing at least once, and with 20 players earning over $100. The big earners to this point are:

  Lozzi - $465, Loring - 373, J. MacNeil 328, Finn - 253, McNeice - 236, Simmons - 195, Shannon - 188, Doonan - 170, G. Willard - 168, Keating - 160.

  See you next Tuesday.

 WEEK 15 CTP           6TH HOLE

Well, for at least the third week in a row, we had meager attendance, with only 41 players teeing it up. Is there something more interesting on Tuesdays that I'm missing out on? Again, scores were bunched heavily right around quota, with 33 out of 41 golfers within two points of their number. Of the limited amount of standouts, Mark Nolan and Alex Turchette led the way and battled it out for 1st Individual at +5, with counselor Nolan prevailing by virtue of his par on the first.

Both of these leaders had no help from their respective partners, so Team prizes were wide open. The hot Lenny Lima stepped up and took control with a solid +3, and all that good clean living paid off as Len needed a partner, and fortuitously drew Mr. Nolan and his +5 as an alternate to proudly take 1st Team at +8.

Dan Szczurko was one of the few who had a really good night at +4 and his partner Dana Willard held on at even to take 2nd Team at +4, beating out Mark Nolan (+5) and Eric Aronson (-1) at +4 because a 4 and a 5 beat a pair of doubles every time. (5th Hole)

Rick Keating was out there early posting a 19'8" mark for CTP on 4 and apparently not even Mike Hunt was able to get it closer, so Mr. Keating will be rewarded with $25.

With the greens having been recently punched, it was tough to get putts to roll true, and accordingly, only five birdie attempts found the target. And for the second week in a row, every bird lived, making it 12 unsmashed birdies over the last two weeks. So getting paid will be Wayne Musgrove (2), Mark Nolan (3), Rick Walsh (6), Bill Doonan (8), and Automatic Steve Lozzi (9).

After a week off from the B9 skins pool, we had a healthy 22 entrants this week but only 4 bids were successful. The 13th was smashed as expected, leaving only two birdies to split the pot. Mike McNeice made up for a mediocre front nine with a crisp 37 on the back and a surviving skin on 12, and Terry Thompson will be rewarded for an outstanding night with a $55 birdie on 14.

There were only six players who posted a number greater than +2 and all six of them will be compensated with prize money of one form or another. Therefore, there are no notables except for money winners. Highpointers this week were Bill Doonan, Terry Thompson and Bob Bourne at 15 points each.

Odds and ends: 1) The year-end tourney is on Sunday, October 13th, with an 8:00 am shotgun start. 2) Easton CC members: you must sign the SIGL sign-in sheet before playing. Easton needs this in order to cross-reference cart fees, etc. 3) We are getting some cards again without quota points added up. If you do not record total points for each golfer or record a plus/minus result for each golfer, then your card will become a discard, and an alternate will take your spot.

And finally, our deep condolences to long-time friend Bob Loring on the recent loss of his mother. And also, we wish for a speedy recovery for Mrs. Saul Payne, who was recently on the losing end of a bicycle vs. pick-up truck incident.

 See you next Tuesday.
