Where was everyone last night? For those of you who chose to sit it out, and there were many, your first mistake was was listening to the weather dopes on TV. They miss more calls than a blind umpire.
We are really starting to hit our stride, and there were many really outstanding scores. Mike McNeice exploded for three birds and a super 21 points, a total achieved only a few times since Rich McKenna used to do it on a regular basis. Smooth Mike's +9 will easily take 1st Individual honors. We had an impressive four golfers (Babyak, Loring, Szczurko, Keating) at +6 and the hot Bob Loring rose above the pack with his pars on 1 and 5 to win the card-off. And he was so pleased with his second week in a row with 17 points, he exclaimed, "I'm going to Disney World!"
With so many no-shows, it was a good week to be first alternate and Dan Szczurko, back in the SIGL family after a year's sabbatical, really took advantage with a season best +6 to pair up with Mr. McNeice's +9 to take 1st Team at +15. And again as an alternate, Dan's +6 was coupled with a fine +3 from Saul Payne to take the 2nd Team prize.
For the second week in a row rookie Ned Babyak nailed Closest to Pin honors with an outstanding approach on 9 to 4'6" that inched out Terry Moore's fine shot to 5'6", and has now won dough three weeks in a row. (Ned, you picked up your old envelope from the box but left your new one. Now you have a new old one and a new new one. Also, you must circle birdies to get credit.)
We had a healthy 14 birdies on the front side, but only two will be getting rewarded with cash. Rick Keating is working his way back from surgery in fine fashion with a nifty birdie on the 6th, and Mr. Loring's 3 on 7 will take half the pot. Birds on 2 (McNeice, Babyak), 3 (Doonan, Szczurko), 4 (Doonan, McNeice), 8 (McNeice, Mark Nolan), and 9 (Szczurko, Babyak, James, G. Willard) did not survive.
There were only four birdies sunk on the back nine, and two will live. Steve Lozzi has been racking up a bunch of birdies lately, and his 3 on 11 will split the pot with this humble hacker who sunk a bomb from the back collar on 12. Steve and playing partner Doc Payne cancelled each other out on 13.
There were many plus performances and a handful of players had really good nights but will not make the money list: TJ James and Bill Doonan, earned +4 each, and John Fay, Steve Danieli, Steve Dasaro, and Jay Chapman came in at +3. Highpointer was Mike McNeice with 21.
Welcome back to last year's scoring leader Bob Bourne, who has pretty much been on the disabled list all year. Good luck with the back, Bob.
And finally, a Happy 4th of July to all. Traditionally, we have taken this week off, and again this year there will be a number of golfers away, so there will be no SIGL golf on July 2nd. We will resume on July 9th. With a little cooperation from the weather from here on in, we should be able to get in all our weeks prior to the October 13th year-end tourney.
See you next Tuesday (not).

Well, it was Tuesday so that means weather was an issue again. It wasn't perfect but we got through the round, and with pretty good attendance to boot.
Unlike previous weeks when scores were pretty much uniformly good or bad, this week scores were all over the lot, with many really good and many really bad.
On the good side, we had an impressive 19 players who were +2 or better. The leader of the plus pack this week was steady Bob Loring who had a breakout performance with 17 points, good for a +7, 1st Individual, and a crisp 77. Right behind him, Mike Nolan had maybe his career SIGL round with an outstanding +6 to take 2nd Individual.
Mr. Loring (+7) had a steady partner in Bill Doonan (E) and their + 7 would tie the powerful team of Rich White (+4) and Ed Finn (+3) at +7. The White/Finn duo takes 1st Team honors with a card-off win on Hole 5. And Big Ed turned in his own tight 77.
Steve Lozzi set the standard early for Closest to Pin on 8 at 12'0", but rookie Ned Babyak came along soon thereafter with a neat 10'4", which stood up for the rest of the day, to cash for the second week in a row. (Ned, you have a cash envelope in the cigar box from a couple of weeks ago, and that goes for you too Bradley.) Mystery golfer Mike Hunt again recorded his standard 69 feet on the CTP marker, but Mike Hunt should not hold out much hope of ever winning Closest because Mike Hunt is not an SIGL member and 69 feet very rarely wins anyway.
For all the good scores, surprisingly there were only nine frontside birdies, with three paying off. The always steady Mike McNeice will be rewarded for his winning bird on 4, while Mike Nolan will collect for his 3 on 8, and Paul Begley gets on the money board with a nice birdie on the 9th. Birdies on 2 (J. MacNeil, White), 3 (E. MacNeil, Svirsky), and 6 (Thompson, Loring) are cancelled out.
We had plenty of good performances that were not rewarded with cash prizes. There were many at +2, and Scott Silvia with a fine +3, Paul McDermott, John Fay, and Rick Keating all at +4, and hard-luck Terry Thompson at +5. High pointer was Bob Loring with 17.
There was limited participation in the Back Nine skins pool, and there were only five birdie putts sunk. Ed Finn stuck one tight on 12 for a tap in, Steve Lozzi dueced the tough 16th, and Dan Svirsky birdied the now more accommodative 18th hole to divvy up the pot. Mr. Lozzi and Mr. Finn covered each other on 13.
We have hit the quarter pole of the season and we have dispensed $1,722 in cash prizes, spread out over 31 players. Top winners, and those that have hit the $100 mark are: Finn ($168), Danieli ($131), Tracy ($125), White ($106), McNeice ($101), and Shannon ($100).
Housekeeping: 1) There will be no golf on Tuesday, July 2nd. 2) Please put last names on the scorecard. We have 56 players and many with the same first names. Submitting cards with first names only or initials only makes it needlessly difficult for us to figure out whose card we are looking at.
And finally, SIGLers continue to shine in Easton CC tournaments. In last week's Lone Ranger tourney, of the four 4-man teams that finished in the money (1st - T3rd) 10 of those 16 players were proud members of SIGL: White, McDermott, James (2nd), and Russell, Doonan, Hrenko (T3rd), and McNeice, Paone, Lozzi, and Barry (T3rd). Nice work men.
See you next Tuesday.

WEEK 5 CTP: 8TH
It looks like we're finally starting to hit our stride, with good attendance and much improved scores from the first three weeks, with 30 players meeting or exceeding quota. (Although still only four frontside birdies.)
Terry Thompson made up for a slow start to the season with a breakout night garnering 16 points, good for a +6 and 1st Individual. And having his career best night, Red Rocketeer Chris Sullivan recorded 10 points, resulting in his own +6 and 2nd Individual. Tall Terry's bogey on 1 was good enough to win the tie-breaker.
Both of the top Individuals had partners with good nights, but it wasn't good enough to top the dynamic duo of the Brit with Grit Terry Moore at +5 and Steady Eddie Finn with a +4 who took 1st Team at +9. Joe Curtis made the most of his first appearance of the year, and of being an alternate, by
tallying his own +5 and was teamed up with the resurgent Mike Bradley, who turned in another +4, resulting in their own +9 for 2nd Team honors. Terry and Ed take first by virtue of their pars on the 1st hole.
Brian Murphy had his best night in a while, and will be rewarded for his superb tee shot on 6 that settled 5'5" from the target, good for Closest to Pin money.
Despite the many good scores, there were surprisingly only four birdies, and two will pay. The affable John Tracy will be rewarded for his skin bird on 2, and congrats to rookie Neil Babyak who will get paid for his winning birdie on 8, and who, like a business framing its first dollar, will frame his first SIGL cash and hang in his man cave. Murphy sunk his birdie putt on 6, but was smashed by
spoiler Terry Thompson.
We had 11 different golfers collect cash this week. And quite a few who had excellent nights but no reward: Eric Aronson, Steve Peterson, and Steve Mattes carded +3 each, and +2 was earned by Raynard, Spears, Leach, Szczurko, Turchette, and Lozzi. Highpointer was Terry Thompson with 16 points.
Apparently the putts were dropping a little better on the back, as seven birdies were returned with two paying. Jim Shannon made up for a poor frontside by rattling off birdies on 10, 11, and 13 and will be paid for 10. And the productive John MacNeil will have an envelope for his winning birdie on 12. Birdies on 11 (Shannon, Thompson) and 13 (Shannon, James, Eddie MacNeil) did not survive.
Housekeeping: 1) Mike Leonard pick up your envelope. 2) Two weeks in a row now (not the same group) we have had a foursome play and not turn in a card. If you do not submit a scorecard on Tuesday night then your round will not count. 3) Rookies: you can pick up winning envelopes in the cigar box on the right side of the bar. 4) Let's hope those plastic hole liners are a temporary thing because they are starting to pop up slightly on some holes, and can easily prevent a slow moving putt from dropping in the side.
And finally, pants off... I mean hats off to the Easton grounds crew for working hard to get the course in much improved shape after very trying conditions this year so far. The rough has become playable again, and the greens remain some of the best around.
See you next Tuesday.
NO, I SAID HATS OFF!
