WEEK 10 CTP               2ND HOLE

HIGHPOINTER        WAYNE MUSGROVE    17 PTS.

Hard to believe, but we are approaching the midway point of the year, and we are playing our best golf of the year, with a bunch of big plus numbers, and only 13 golfers who did not reach quota.

Wayne Musgrove has been quiet all year, but the big guy exploded this week for a mighty 17 points on the back of two birds, and his +7 will be enough to secure 1st Individual honors. Coming in right behind was the fine trio of Jim Shannon, Chris Sullivan, and Terry Moore at +6 with Mr. Shannon's par on 1 giving him 2nd Individual.

Nice to see North Adams' finest native son Mayhem Mike Bradley break out of a long funk with his best performance of the year with an outstanding +5. And also rising from the ashes is John Tracy who followed last week's super +8 with a fine +4, only two weeks after saying "my golf game has descended into degradation and ruin." The comeback kids will take the 1st Team prize at +9

Right on their heels was the fine partnership of Jim Shannon with his +6 and Rick Keating's solid contribution of +2 to take 2nd Team at +8.

Closest to the Pin on 9 is always close, but this week Greg Willard made it really close with a great chip to 1'11" to earn $25. Long hitter Rich White was securely on the green in two shots, 12 feet from the pin. Rich thought of all the goodies to come if he sunk the putt: eight points for an eagle, almost certain skins money, and Closest to Pin Cash. But like his fellow long-hitting buddy a few weeks ago, he proceeded to three putt, dashing all hopes of fame and glory.

There was a total of 11 front-side birdies, and 3 of them will earn an envelope. Terry Thompson started his afternoon off on the right foot with a great bird on the 1st hole, Wayne Musgrove will collect on 4, and it is only fair that Terry Moore will be rewarded for his outstanding night with a paying birdie on the difficult 5th hole.

Birdies on 3 (Lozzi, Danieli, Moore), 8 (Bourne, Hrenko, Musgrove), and 9 (G. Willard, Shannon) were not skins-worthy.

There were only two birdies on the back nine and they were both on the 13th hole (Lozzi, Svirsky). There will be carryover of $115 into our next round (July 10th).

Outstanding performers who were not in the money this week were Chris Sullivan at +6, Mark Spears and John Hrenko at +4, and Rick Walsh and Bob Bourne at +3. Wayne Musgrove's 17 points earns him highpointer honors.

And a tip of the cap to good guy Steve Lozzi who won his bracket in the recent Easton CC match play tourney by soundly repelling fellow SIGL challengers Loring, Barry, and James. Nice job Steve.

Thank you to all who have started printing their name on the sign-in sheet or at least contained their signature to one line. But from the It Falls On Deaf Ears Department, of course there continue to be a few "big signers" requiring us to have to cross-reference the sign-in sheet with the scorecards to figure out how many golfers we owe for. TJ even had to give a private tutorial to one stubborn offender on how to color between the lines.

And finally, also from the It Falls on Deaf Ears Dept., sure as shootin', we will get at least one call or e-mail this weekend asking if we are playing on July 3rd. Anyone who asks will be told that yes we are playing and that we're gonna have a free clambake and open bar afterward, and bring your family and friends.

   See you next Tuesday (Not)

WEEK 9 CTP:                      9TH HOLE

After two weeks of diabolical pin placements, sanity was restored and the easier hole locations produced some pretty good golf, with only 15 golfers failing to reach their quota.

After a quiet season to date, John Tracy let loose with a super + 8 which resulted in three different payouts; 1st Individual, and as an alternate John hooked up with Mike Nolan, who had his own impressive +5 to take 1st Team at +13.

Mr. Tracy also had a good original partner in Mike Leonard at +2 to earn 2nd Team. And Johnny MacNeil's +5 bested Mike Nolan's +5 in a card-off for 2nd Individual.

Early on, Dan McGarry posted an impressive 9'10" on the 8th hole Closest to Pin, and no later challenger could best that.

Surprisingly, with so many good scores, there were only three birdies on the front, and all will pay cash: Ed Finn on 2, after two fine shots put him in front of the green, John MacNeil with a nifty bird on 5, and Wayne Musgrove who was the only player to birdie the inviting 8th hole. There were no covered holes.

Likewise, on the back nine, there were only three birds, and all lived. Jim Lyons will be rewarded for his 3 on the 10th, Mike McNeice made up for a disappointing front with a well-earned birdie on the challenging 15th, and the red-hot and leading candidate for most improved golfer Mike Leonard birdied the even more difficult 17th hole.

Notable performances that did not earn cash were John Hrenko at +4, and Ed MacNeil and Dan Svirsky at +3. Highpointer was John MacNeil with 15.

There will be no league play on Tuesday, July 3rd. For those of you who read this blog, but next week will still ask, "Hey, are we playing on July 3rd?", maybe this update will be helpful: THERE WILL BE NO LEAGUE PLAY ON TUESDAY, JULY 3RD.

And finally, starting next week, please PRINT your name on the sign-in sheet instead of using your signature. We pay Easton each week based on the number of sign-ins on the sheet. Despite our previous requests, we have a handful of players who make John Hancock look like a piker when signing in, taking up three and four lines for their over-the-top signature. The problem is that you end up "signing in" other names, even though that player or players did not play that night, and we get billed for them. We shouldn't have to do a forensic analysis each week in order to figure out how many players we owe for. Thanks.

  See you next Tuesday.

  HIGHPOINTER:                 LEN LIMA                            15 PTS

Maybe it was the schizo weather (sun/rain/rain/sun) that kept duffers away, but for whatever reason, we had only 39 contestants this week. But for those of us who showed up, we had our best performance of the year, with only eight players not reaching their quota.

The unsinkable Lenny Lima led the way this week, and will be collecting for the fourth time this year. Len was proceeding along with a steady round, and then finished with a flourish with birdies on 8 and 9 to return a robust 15 points and a +7. That was enough to secure 1st Individual and to also lead his partnership with alternate Jay Chapman (E) to 1st Team at +7.

Mike Leonard continues his torrid play with a strong +5 to take 2nd Individual. And hats off to Mike the Mechanic for his career low round of 76 in non-SIGL play last week.

We had a traffic jam for 2nd Team with four teams at +5: (Mark Nolan/Tom Nolan) (Alex Turchette/Terry Thompson) (John Fay/Terry Thompson, alt) and (Paul Begley/Joe Curtis). Begley and Curtis prevailed on the hardest holes, and will take the card-off prize.

The pin was tucked in a tough spot behind the bunker on 4 this week, so no one was able to stick it tight. But Joe Curtis hit a fine shot to 20' 5" which was enough to repel all challengers for Closest to Pin honors.

We had a total of only seven birdies this week, and three will be cashing. Mark Nolan took advantage of the inviting 3rd hole with a surviving bird, Eric Aronson recorded an impressive 3 on the 5th hole, and Len Lima had one of his birds pay with a 4 on the 9th. The 8th hole was thoroughly covered by Lima, White, Leonard, and Fay.

Notable scores posted that were not rewarded with cash were Alex Turchette and Johnny Fay at +4, and Scott Silvia, Steve Danieli, and Paul Raynard at +3. Len Lima will take highpointer honors with 15.

There was a $90 pot for the back-nine skins pool, and again this week every birdie on the back will be rewarded with cash. Thompson, Lozzi, Barry, and James in order birdied 12, 13, 14, and 15.

One SIGLer has asked that we mention the issue of unrepaired ball marks on greens, and we have to agree with him. This is certainly not a problem unique to SIGL or even to Easton CC. But as this player points out, he plays late and by the time he is on the course he sees numerous fresh unrepaired ball marks on every hole. After your ball is on the green, mark it, and then look for and repair your ball mark. And don't forget fairway divots, too.

Glad to see that Doctor Saul is recuperating nicely, and will be returning to the links this weekend.

And finally, a heart-felt thanks to Ted Meyers' better half for the beautiful hollow-book wooden box decorated in a golf theme that she made for the league, and which will replace the well-used Arturo Fuentes cigar box that we have had for many years. It's really cool, so check it out. Thanks, Wanda. (And we thought Teddy was the crafty one!)

    See you next Tuesday.
