Recap Week 5

Well, we're at the quarter pole of the  season, the sun finally came out and all the fairweather golfers emerged from the their burrows, so we finally had a good attendance night.

Alot of good scores were turned in. Dan Szczurko came out of the box strong with a birdie on 1 which was worth $30 and surprsingly 8 held up for Paul McDermott. Ed Finn continues his impressive play and garnered closest to the pin on 9 and had a kick-in birdie. (Birdies on 3 and 9 were covered.) Greg Jurgilewicz, Peter Jaffe, and Marshall Poverman all had strong showings, but were not able to cash. Renowned mixologist and funnyman Obo observed that the f-bombs were flowing freely from Jurgy's mouth when he learned that +6 would not earn him a little cake. (He gets 15 points and all he got was this lousy tee-shirt, I mean this lousy blog blurb.) Greg, these things have a way of evening out: Some night you will be -2, but be on the winning team, or you'll birdie an easy hole and win $90. This humble hacker finally got out of a bogey funk and turned in a good round, earning 18 points, and the pride of Southie Joe Curtis played well enough to earn team honors and a few bucks for brews at the L Street Tavern.

Leading money winner Frank LaRosa is out for a while as he seeks treatment for lime disease, so let's wish him well. Also, here's hoping that Jim Thompson makes it back soon from surgery. (Each recap now contains a medical update section.)

Next week , the league competition will be played on the  back nine, and the closest to the pin will be the 14th hole. We will still be able to play 18 holes if you normally do. Sign-in as usual, and then crack starter Steve Romano will take care of you.

On 6/12/12, Mark Lombardi's small league that follows us, is going to have a steak dinner after golf and has invited SIGL to join in. Grilled steaks will be served around  7:00 PM, and the cost will be $15. Mark needs a number from us, so we will put out a sign-up sheet at the desk next Tuesday. If you sign up then you are on the (meat) hook for the cost. Of course, any of you guys who are currently on the disabled list are also welcome. Just let me know.

And finally, Scorekeeping 101:  1) Circle birdies.  2) Don't circle non-birdies.  We continue to get cards turned in where birdies are not circled and other cards with circles galore that have no birdies on them. Thanks.

Bino wants to play some golf
This picture is also used for complaints about their quota's

Recap Week 4

We have been open for business for five weeks, and everyone one of them has been tough weatherwise. (Go figure, three days in Maine and everyone one of them was good  weather.)  Law of averages says we are due for a run of good nights now. As noted, after we complete our 20-week season (we've played 4 so far), we will have an extra Tuesday night at no extra charge to all SIGL members, and with the usual weekly prizes.

Again, the scores reflected the bad weather, with only five golfers exceeding their quotas. From having 15 birdies the week before, there was only one this week, with Rick Walsh taking the whole pot and rocketing up the leader board. Jay Chapman scratched his way to a +4 to win individual honors and Jim Lyons continues his solid play with a +3 and team honors, along with Paul Raynard who rode Jim's coattails, but will gladly accept the cash. Ed MacNeil stuck one tight on 8 to grab closest to the pin, but couldn't convert the birdie, $45 slipping through his hands and straight into the pocket of a grateful Rick Walsh.

And since all of our SIGL recaps are eventually filed with the Library of Congress national archives, Tom Tibbetts wants the record to show that he is not getting old, and that he was 5 INCHES, not 5 feet, short of the 3rd green, and that was only because he wanted to stay below the hole.

Bino is hanging in there waiting for surgery in June, which will result in repaired discs, and he is hoping a new bionic swing. Also, good luck to Steve Peterson who is going in for surgery soon, and let's hope Brian Murphy's repaired parts come around so he can join us again soon. He is missed on the course and at the 19th hole.

Okay, if there is such a thing as the opposite of an Indian rain dance, let's all practice it between now and Tuesday. As Obo would say: OUT.

I'd like to add that what you saw was my tears coming from the sky....I'll stop crying and let you guys play. LB is right I am looking for something bionic....if he is going to cut me open might as well put the latest technology in to improve my game.

Recap Week 3

The week off must have been good for your swings as there were many impressive rounds last night. SIGL newcomer Bob Frick lit it up with a 38/75 round on his way to raping and pillaging his newfound foursome with a satchelful of skins, birdies, greenies, and chip-ins. Sweet-swinging Mike McNeice had it going, too, carding a 38, three birdies, and 19 points. Our newly acquired IBM 645QC Quota Calculator machine is busy as we speak bumping up the numbers. And old codger Billy Karas showed he's still got it with closest to the pin on the 6th and the bird. (B.K. doesn't miss 5 foot, 2 inchers.)  The birdies were rolling in with a total of 15 for the night, three of which lived. Greg Willard again found a way to birdie a hole that lived. (Sorry Greg, I forgot to leave the Macanudo box at the turn. I'm old and I forget. You'll get two payments next week.) Based on the number of golfers who actually got in the birdie pool, the pool  will pay $90 per week.

And it was good to see old pal, Charlestown's finest, Tom Tibbetts. When he was in the league, Tom would routinely drive the 3rd green. He must be getting old too because last night he was 5 feet short.

As you may know, our man Bino is currently on the disabled list, and has just scheduled neck surgery that will be done in mid-June, followed by r&r. It's not the same without you on Tuesdays Johnny. On occasion, drop Bino a line to cheer him up. He's bummed that this didn't come up during the winter instead of during golf season.

And finally, an All Points Bulletin has been put out for  Bob LaCasse and Dan Reardon, who have not shown up this year. Are you guys in or out?

And really finally:  The website, with new quotas, will be updated within a few days by Bino, bad neck and all.

It took 24 years of marriage...my wife finally broke me. Dr Summeroff will put me back together so I can get back out there to join you...in the meantime I will live vicariously through LB's updates.

Recap Week 2

The bad news was that for the second straight Tuesday, the weather sucked. The good news was that there was no problem finding a parking spot.

After not picking up a club in six months, Frank LaRosa is off to a torrid start, with 36 quota points in two weeks. The Willard boys also continue to impress.

After conferring with Dr Howard....Dr Fine....Dr Howard....I went to a 4th doctor...Dr Bombay and have been placed on the DL due to neck and shoulder problems. Hopefully I'll be back sooner rather than later chasing that little white ball around the course. I'll continue to do the numbers while LB keeps me informed in the ongoing of the SIGL weekly news.
